DSP Linearization for Millimeter-Wave All-Digital Receiver Array with Low-Resolution ADCs
Millimeter-wave (mmWave) communications and cell densification are the key
techniques for the future evolution of cellular systems beyond 5G. Although the
current mmWave radio designs are focused on hybrid digital and analog receiver
array architectures, the fully digital architecture is an appealing option due
to its flexibility and support for multi-user multiple-input multiple-output
(MIMO). In order to achieve reasonable power consumption and hardware cost, the
specifications of analog circuits are expected to be compromised, including the
resolution of analog-to-digital converter (ADC) and the linearity of
radio-frequency (RF) front end. Although the state-of-the-art studies focus on
the ADC, the nonlinearity can also lead to severe system performance
degradation when strong input signals introduce inter-modulation distortion
(IMD). The impact of RF nonlinearity becomes more severe with densely deployed
mmWave cells since signal sources closer to the receiver array are more likely
to occur. In this work, we design and analyze the digital IMD compensation
algorithm, and study the relaxation of the required linearity in the RF-chain.
We propose novel algorithms that jointly process digitized samples to recover
amplifier saturation, and relies on beam space operation which reduces the
computational complexity as compared to per-antenna IMD compensation.Comment: 2019 IEEE 20th International Workshop on Signal Processing Advances

Robust massive MIMO Equilization for mmWave systems with low resolution ADCs
Leveraging the available millimeter wave spectrum will be important for 5G.
In this work, we investigate the performance of digital beamforming with low
resolution ADCs based on link level simulations including channel estimation,
MIMO equalization and channel decoding. We consider the recently agreed 3GPP NR
type 1 OFDM reference signals. The comparison shows sequential DCD outperforms
MMSE-based MIMO equalization both in terms of detection performance and
complexity. We also show that the DCD based algorithm is more robust to channel
estimation errors. In contrast to the common believe we also show that the
complexity of MMSE equalization for a massive MIMO system is not dominated by
the matrix inversion but by the computation of the Gram matrix.Comment: submitted to WCNC 2018 Workshop
MmWave Massive MIMO Based Wireless Backhaul for 5G Ultra-Dense Network
Ultra-dense network (UDN) has been considered as a promising candidate for
future 5G network to meet the explosive data demand. To realize UDN, a
reliable, Gigahertz bandwidth, and cost-effective backhaul connecting
ultra-dense small-cell base stations (BSs) and macro-cell BS is prerequisite.
Millimeter-wave (mmWave) can provide the potential Gbps traffic for wireless
backhaul. Moreover, mmWave can be easily integrated with massive MIMO for the
improved link reliability. In this article, we discuss the feasibility of
mmWave massive MIMO based wireless backhaul for 5G UDN, and the benefits and
challenges are also addressed. Especially, we propose a digitally-controlled
phase-shifter network (DPSN) based hybrid precoding/combining scheme for mmWave
massive MIMO, whereby the low-rank property of mmWave massive MIMO channel
matrix is leveraged to reduce the required cost and complexity of transceiver
with a negligible performance loss. One key feature of the proposed scheme is
that the macro-cell BS can simultaneously support multiple small-cell BSs with
multiple streams for each smallcell BS, which is essentially different from
conventional hybrid precoding/combining schemes typically limited to
single-user MIMO with multiple streams or multi-user MIMO with single stream
for each user. Based on the proposed scheme, we further explore the fundamental
issues of developing mmWave massive MIMO for wireless backhaul, and the
associated challenges, insight, and prospect to enable the mmWave massive MIMO
based wireless backhaul for 5G UDN are discussed.Comment: This paper has been accepted by IEEE Wireless Communications

A Reduced Complexity Ungerboeck Receiver for Quantized Wideband Massive SC-MIMO
Employing low resolution analog-to-digital converters in massive
multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) has many advantages in terms of total
power consumption, cost and feasibility of such systems. However, such
advantages come together with significant challenges in channel estimation and
data detection due to the severe quantization noise present. In this study, we
propose a novel iterative receiver for quantized uplink single carrier MIMO
(SC-MIMO) utilizing an efficient message passing algorithm based on the
Bussgang decomposition and Ungerboeck factorization, which avoids the use of a
complex whitening filter. A reduced state sequence estimator with bidirectional
decision feedback is also derived, achieving remarkable complexity reduction
compared to the existing receivers for quantized SC-MIMO in the literature,
without any requirement on the sparsity of the transmission channel. Moreover,
the linear minimum mean-square-error (LMMSE) channel estimator for SC-MIMO
under frequency-selective channel, which do not require any cyclic-prefix
overhead, is also derived. We observe that the proposed receiver has
significant performance gains with respect to the existing receivers in the
literature under imperfect channel state information.Comment: This work has been submitted to the IEEE for possible publication.

Power Scaling and Antenna Selection Techniques for Hybrid Beamforming in mmWave Massive MIMO Systems
With the advent of massive MIMO and mmWave, Antenna selection is the new frontier in hybrid beamforming employed in 5G base stations. Tele-operators are reworking on the components while upgrading to 5G where the antenna is a last-mile device. The burden on the physical layer not only demands smart and adaptive antennas but also an intelligent antenna selection mechanism to reduce power consumption and improve system capacity while degrading the hardware cost and complexity. This work focuses on reducing the power consumption and finding the optimal number of RF chains for a given millimeter wave massive MIMO system. At first, we investigate the power scaling method for both perfect Channel State Information (CSI) and imperfect CSI where the power is reduced by 1/number of antennas and 1/square root (number of antennas) respectively. We further propose to reduce the power consumption by emphasizing on the subdued resolution of Analog-to-Digital Converters (ADCs) with quantization awareness. The proposed algorithm selects the optimal number of antenna elements based on the resolution of ADCs without compromising on the quality of reception. The performance of the proposed algorithm shows significant improvement when compared with conventional and random antenna selection methods
