Digital Filter Design Using Improved Artificial Bee Colony Algorithms
Digital filters are often used in digital signal processing applications. The design objective of a digital filter is to find the optimal set of filter coefficients, which satisfies the desired specifications of magnitude and group delay responses. Evolutionary algorithms are population-based meta-heuristic algorithms inspired by the biological behaviors of species. Compared to gradient-based optimization algorithms such as steepest descent and Newton’s like methods, these bio-inspired algorithms have the advantages of not getting stuck at local optima and being independent of the starting point in the solution space. The limitations of evolutionary algorithms include the presence of control parameters, problem specific tuning procedure, premature convergence and slower convergence rate. The artificial bee colony (ABC) algorithm is a swarm-based search meta-heuristic algorithm inspired by the foraging behaviors of honey bee colonies, with the benefit of a relatively fewer control parameters. In its original form, the ABC algorithm has certain limitations such as low convergence rate, and insufficient balance between exploration and exploitation in the search equations. In this dissertation, an ABC-AMR algorithm is proposed by incorporating an adaptive modification rate (AMR) into the original ABC algorithm to increase convergence rate by adjusting the balance between exploration and exploitation in the search equations through an adaptive determination of the number of parameters to be updated in every iteration. A constrained ABC-AMR algorithm is also developed for solving constrained optimization problems.There are many real-world problems requiring simultaneous optimizations of more than one conflicting objectives. Multiobjective (MO) optimization produces a set of feasible solutions called the Pareto front instead of a single optimum solution. For multiobjective optimization, if a decision maker’s preferences can be incorporated during the optimization process, the search process can be confined to the region of interest instead of searching the entire region. In this dissertation, two algorithms are developed for such incorporation. The first one is a reference-point-based MOABC algorithm in which a decision maker’s preferences are included in the optimization process as the reference point. The second one is a physical-programming-based MOABC algorithm in which physical programming is used for setting the region of interest of a decision maker. In this dissertation, the four developed algorithms are applied to solve digital filter design problems. The ABC-AMR algorithm is used to design Types 3 and 4 linear phase FIR differentiators, and the results are compared to those obtained by the original ABC algorithm, three improved ABC algorithms, and the Parks-McClellan algorithm. The constrained ABC-AMR algorithm is applied to the design of sparse Type 1 linear phase FIR filters of filter orders 60, 70 and 80, and the results are compared to three state-of-the-art design methods. The reference-point-based multiobjective ABC algorithm is used to design of asymmetric lowpass, highpass, bandpass and bandstop FIR filters, and the results are compared to those obtained by the preference-based multiobjective differential evolution algorithm. The physical-programming-based multiobjective ABC algorithm is used to design IIR lowpass, highpass and bandpass filters, and the results are compared to three state-of-the-art design methods. Based on the obtained design results, the four design algorithms are shown to be competitive as compared to the state-of-the-art design methods
Improved Distributed Estimation Method for Environmental\ud time-variant Physical variables in Static Sensor Networks

Moreover, certain parameter optimization is alleviated with the application of a particular finite impulse response (FIR) filter. Approximation of L\"owdin Orthogonalization to a Spectrally Efficient Orthogonal Overlapping PPM Design for UWB Impulse Radio
In this paper we consider the design of spectrally efficient time-limited
pulses for ultrawideband (UWB) systems using an overlapping pulse position
modulation scheme. For this we investigate an orthogonalization method, which
was developed in 1950 by Per-Olov L\"owdin. Our objective is to obtain a set of
N orthogonal (L\"owdin) pulses, which remain time-limited and spectrally
efficient for UWB systems, from a set of N equidistant translates of a
time-limited optimal spectral designed UWB pulse. We derive an approximate
L\"owdin orthogonalization (ALO) by using circulant approximations for the Gram
matrix to obtain a practical filter implementation. We show that the centered
ALO and L\"owdin pulses converge pointwise to the same Nyquist pulse as N tends
to infinity. The set of translates of the Nyquist pulse forms an orthonormal
basis or the shift-invariant space generated by the initial spectral optimal
pulse. The ALO transform provides a closed-form approximation of the L\"owdin
transform, which can be implemented in an analog fashion without the need of
analog to digital conversions. Furthermore, we investigate the interplay
between the optimization and the orthogonalization procedure by using methods
from the theory of shift-invariant spaces. Finally we develop a connection

Waveform Design for 5G and beyond Systems
5G traffic has very diverse requirements with respect to data rate, delay, and reliability. The concept of using multiple OFDM numerologies adopted in the 5G NR standard will likely meet these multiple requirements to some extent. However, the traffic is radically accruing different characteristics and requirements when compared with the initial stage of 5G, which focused mainly on high-speed multimedia data applications. For instance, applications such as vehicular communications and robotics control require a highly reliable and ultra-low delay. In addition, various emerging M2M applications have sparse traffic with a small amount of data to be delivered. The state-of-the-art OFDM technique has some limitations when addressing the aforementioned requirements at the same time. Meanwhile, numerous waveform alternatives, such as FBMC, GFDM, and UFMC, have been explored. They also have their own pros and cons due to their intrinsic waveform properties. Hence, it is the opportune moment to come up with modification/variations/combinations to the aforementioned techniques or a new waveform design for 5G systems and beyond. Cascaded-Resonator-Based Recursive Harmonic Analysis
It is well known that recursive algorithms for harmonic analysis have better characteristics in terms of monitoring the change of the spectrum in comparison to methods based on the processing of blocks of consecutive samples, such as, for example, discrete Fourier transform (DFT). This property is particularly important when applying spectral estimation in real-time systems. One of the recursive algorithms is the resonator-based one. The approach of the parallel cascades of multiple resonators (MR) with the common feedback has been generalized as the cascaded-resonator (CR)-based structure for recursive harmonic analysis. The resulting filters of the CR structure can be finite impulse response (FIR) type or the infinite impulse response (IIR) ones as a computationally more efficient solution, optimizing the frequency responses of all harmonics simultaneously. In the case of the IIR filter, the unit characteristic polynomial present in the FIR filter is replaced with an optimized characteristic polynomial of the transfer function. Such a change does not lead to an increase in computing requirements and changes only the resonator gain values. By using a conveniently linearized iterative algorithm for stability control purpose, based on the Rouche’s theorem, the iterative linear-programming-based or the constrained linear least-squares (CLLS) optimization techniques can be used
Analysis of Nonlinear Behaviors, Design and Control of Sigma Delta Modulators
M PhilSigma delta modulators (SDMs) have been widely applied in analogue-to-digital
(A/D) conversion for many years. SDMs are becoming more and more popular in power
electronic circuits because it can be viewed and applied as oversampled A/D converters
with low resolution quantizers. The basic structure of an SDM under analytical
investigation consists of a loop filter and a low bit quantizer connected by a negative
feedback loop.
Although there are numerous advantages of SDMs over other A/D converters, the
application of SDMs is limited by the unboundedness of the system states and their
nonlinear behaviors. It was found that complex dynamical behaviors exist in low bit
SDMs, and for a bandpass SDM, the state space dynamics can be represented by elliptic
fractal patterns confined within two trapezoidal regions. In all, there are three types of
nonlinear behaviors, namely fixed point, limit cycle and chaotic behaviors. Related to the
unboundedness issue, divergent behavior of system states is also a commonly discovered
phenomenon. Consequently, how to design and control the SDM so that the system states
are bounded and the unwanted nonlinear behaviors are avoided is a hot research topic
worthy of investigated.
In our investigation, we perform analysis on such complex behaviors and
determine a control strategy to maintain the boundedness of the system states and avoid
the occurrence of limit cycle behavior. For the design problem, we impose constraints
based on the performance of an SDM and determine an optimal design for the SDM. The
results are significantly better than the existing approaches
