    Energy-efficient acceleration of MPEG-4 compression tools

    We propose novel hardware accelerator architectures for the most computationally demanding algorithms of the MPEG-4 video compression standard-motion estimation, binary motion estimation (for shape coding), and the forward/inverse discrete cosine transforms (incorporating shape adaptive modes). These accelerators have been designed using general low-energy design philosophies at the algorithmic/architectural abstraction levels. The themes of these philosophies are avoiding waste and trading area/performance for power and energy gains. Each core has been synthesised targeting TSMC 0.09 μm TCBN90LP technology, and the experimental results presented in this paper show that the proposed cores improve upon the prior art

Uluslararası bir video sıkıştırma standardı olan H.264/MPEG-4 bölüm 10, daha önceki standartlara göre kodlama verimini iyileştirmek amacıyla geliştirilmiştir. Fakat, bu kodlama geliştirmesi beraberinde kodlama karmaşıklığının da artmasına yol açmaktadır. Bu tez çalışmasında Texas Instruments TMS320DM642 sayısal sinyal işleyici üzerinde H.264 temel profil kodlayıcı gerçeklenmiştir. DM642 DSP çekirdeği üzerindeki gerçek zamanlı H.264/AVC kodlayıcı uygulaması hata esnekliği araçları ve çeyrek piksel hareket dengeleme dışında standart tüm H.264/AVC temel profil kodlama araçlarını sunmaktadır. Çeyrek piksel hareket dengelem yerine, tüm parlaklılık ve renklik bileşenleri için tam sayı ve yarım piksel pozisyonlarında hareket kestirim ve dengeleme gerçeklenmiştir. Kullanılan DM642 DSP çekirdeği platformu, 2-seviyeli bellek/önbellek aşama düzenine sahip ve VLIW içeren yüksek performanslı sayısal işlemci olarak tasarlanmıştır. Sunulan H.264 temel kodlayıcı sistemin gerçeklenmesi ve eniyilemesi bu tezin konusudur. Üstelik, algoritma bazlı, mimari ve bellek stratejilerini içeren eniyileme çalışma fazları detaylarıyla açıklanmaktadır. H.264/AVC video kodlayıcının hem geliştirme ortamında hem de DM642 EVM donanım ortamında çalışması doğrulanmıştır. Kısaca, kodlayıcı sisteme giriş olan CIF çözünürlükte sıkıştırılmamış YUV video dizisi H.264 Annex-B dosya biçiminde ve de ekrana video çıktı verilerek sıkıştırılmaktadır. Ek olarak, kodlayıcı çıktısı H.264 referans yazılımla doğruluğu kontrol edilmiş ve uyumluluğu kanıtlanmıştır.Recently, digital video coding is mandatory in many applications such as digital surveillance systems, video conferencing, mobile applications as well as video broadcasts. The H.264/MPEG-4 Part 10, an international video compression standard, is developed for improving the coding efficiency compared to previous standards. However, the coding improvement comes with an increase in coding complexity. In this thesis, an H.264 baseline profile encoder is implemented on Texas Instruments TMS320DM642 digital signal processor. The real-time implementation of the H.264/AVC encoder on DM642 DSP core offers most of the standard H.264/AVC baseline profile coding tools except error resiliency tools and quarter-pel motion estimation. Instead of quarter-pel motion compensation, integer and half pixel position motion estimation and compensation for all luminance and chrominance components are implemented. The target platform, DM64 DSP core, is designed as a high-performance digital media processor with two-level memory/cache hierarchy and VLIW architecture. The subject of the thesis is H.264 baseline encoder system realization and optimization on the target platform. Moreover, the study of optimization phases covering algorithmic, architectural and memory strategies are clarified in details. The H.264/AVC encoder system is verified both to execute on the development workstation and DM642 EVM (Evaluation Module) hardware platform. Briefly, the uncompressed input of a YUV video sequence with CIF resolution to the encoder system is compressed to H.264 Annex-B file format and displayed on screen.     High-Level Synthesis Based VLSI Architectures for Video Coding

    High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) is state-of-the-art video coding standard. Emerging applications like free-viewpoint video, 360degree video, augmented reality, 3D movies etc. require standardized extensions of HEVC. The standardized extensions of HEVC include HEVC Scalable Video Coding (SHVC), HEVC Multiview Video Coding (MV-HEVC), MV-HEVC+ Depth (3D-HEVC) and HEVC Screen Content Coding. 3D-HEVC is used for applications like view synthesis generation, free-viewpoint video. Coding and transmission of depth maps in 3D-HEVC is used for the virtual view synthesis by the algorithms like Depth Image Based Rendering (DIBR). As first step, we performed the profiling of the 3D-HEVC standard. Computational intensive parts of the standard are identified for the efficient hardware implementation. One of the computational intensive part of the 3D-HEVC, HEVC and H.264/AVC is the Interpolation Filtering used for Fractional Motion Estimation (FME). The hardware implementation of the interpolation filtering is carried out using High-Level Synthesis (HLS) tools. Xilinx Vivado Design Suite is used for the HLS implementation of the interpolation filters of HEVC and H.264/AVC. The complexity of the digital systems is greatly increased. High-Level Synthesis is the methodology which offers great benefits such as late architectural or functional changes without time consuming in rewriting of RTL-code, algorithms can be tested and evaluated early in the design cycle and development of accurate models against which the final hardware can be verified

    Exploring Processor and Memory Architectures for Multimedia

    Multimedia has become one of the cornerstones of our 21st century society and, when combined with mobility, has enabled a tremendous evolution of our society. However, joining these two concepts introduces many technical challenges. These range from having sufficient performance for handling multimedia content to having the battery stamina for acceptable mobile usage. When taking a projection of where we are heading, we see these issues becoming ever more challenging by increased mobility as well as advancements in multimedia content, such as introduction of stereoscopic 3D and augmented reality. The increased performance needs for handling multimedia come not only from an ongoing step-up in resolution going from QVGA (320x240) to Full HD (1920x1080) a 27x increase in less than half a decade. On top of this, there is also codec evolution (MPEG-2 to H.264 AVC) that adds to the computational load increase. To meet these performance challenges there has been processing and memory architecture advances (SIMD, out-of-order superscalarity, multicore processing and heterogeneous multilevel memories) in the mobile domain, in conjunction with ever increasing operating frequencies (200MHz to 2GHz) and on-chip memory sizes (128KB to 2-3MB). At the same time there is an increase in requirements for mobility, placing higher demands on battery-powered systems despite the steady increase in battery capacity (500 to 2000mAh). This leaves negative net result in-terms of battery capacity versus performance advances. In order to make optimal use of these architectural advances and to meet the power limitations in mobile systems, there is a need for taking an overall approach on how to best utilize these systems. The right trade-off between performance and power is crucial. On top of these constraints, the flexibility aspects of the system need to be addressed. All this makes it very important to reach the right architectural balance in the system. The first goal for this thesis is to examine multimedia applications and propose a flexible solution that can meet the architectural requirements in a mobile system. Secondly, propose an automated methodology of optimally mapping multimedia data and instructions to a heterogeneous multilevel memory subsystem. The proposed methodology uses constraint programming for solving a multidimensional optimization problem. Results from this work indicate that using today’s most advanced mobile processor technology together with a multi-level heterogeneous on-chip memory subsystem can meet the performance requirements for handling multimedia. By utilizing the automated optimal memory mapping method presented in this thesis lower total power consumption can be achieved, whilst performance for multimedia applications is improved, by employing enhanced memory management. This is achieved through reduced external accesses and better reuse of memory objects. This automatic method shows high accuracy, up to 90%, for predicting multimedia memory accesses for a given architecture

    Implementing video compression algorithms on reconfigurable devices

    The increasing density offered by Field Programmable Gate Arrays(FPGA), coupled with their short design cycle, has made them a popular choice for implementing a wide range of algorithms and complete systems. In this thesis the implementation of video compression algorithms on FPGAs is studied. Two areas are specifically focused on; the integration of a video encoder into a complete system and the power consumption of FPGA based video encoders. Two FPGA based video compression systems are described, one which targets surveillance applications and one which targets video conferencing applications. The FPGA video surveillance system makes use of a novel memory format to improve the efficiency with which input video sequences can be loaded over the system bus. The power consumption of a FPGA video encoder is analyzed. The results indicating that the motion estimation encoder stage requires the most power consumption. An algorithm, which reuses the intra prediction results generated during the encoding process, is then proposed to reduce the power consumed on an FPGA video encoder’s external memory bus. Finally, the power reduction algorithm is implemented within an FPGA video encoder. Results are given showing that, in addition to reducing power on the external memory bus, the algorithm also reduces power in the motion estimation stage of a FPGA based video encoder

    Towards flexible hardware/software encoding using H.264

    As the electronics world continues to expand, bringing smaller and more portable devices to consumers, demands for media access continue to rise. Consumers are seeking the ability to view the wealth of information available on the Internet from devices such as smart phones, tablets, and music players. In addition to Internet browsing, smart phones and tablets in particular look to reinvent phone communication by adding video chat through services such as Skype and FaceTime. Bringing video to mobile platforms requires trade-offs between size, channel capacity, hardware cost, quality, loading times and power consumption. H.264, the current standard for video encoding specifies multiple profiles to support different modes of operation and environments. Creating an H.264 video encoder for a mobile platform requires a proper balance between the aforementioned trade-offs while maintaining flexibility in a real time environment such as video chatting. The goal of this thesis was to investigate the trade-offs of implementing the H.264 Baseline encoding process specifically at low bit rates in hardware and software using Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) reconfigurable resources with an embedded processor core on the same chip. To further preserve encoding flexibility, existing encoding parameters were left intact. The Joint Model (JM) Reference encoder modified to include only the Baseline Profile was used as an initial reference point to evaluate the efficacy of the finished encoder. To improve upon the initial software implementation, major software bottlenecks were identified and hardware accelerators were designed aimed at producing a speedup capable of encoding 176x144 or Quarter Common Intermediate Format (QCIF) videos in real-time at 24 Frames Per Second (FPS) or greater. Finally, the hardware/software implementation was analyzed in comparison with the original JM Reference software encoder. This analysis included FPS, bit rate, encoding time, luminance Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio (Y-PSNR) and associated hardware costs

    Energy efficient hardware acceleration of multimedia processing tools

    The world of mobile devices is experiencing an ongoing trend of feature enhancement and generalpurpose multimedia platform convergence. This trend poses many grand challenges, the most pressing being their limited battery life as a consequence of delivering computationally demanding features. The envisaged mobile application features can be considered to be accelerated by a set of underpinning hardware blocks Based on the survey that this thesis presents on modem video compression standards and their associated enabling technologies, it is concluded that tight energy and throughput constraints can still be effectively tackled at algorithmic level in order to design re-usable optimised hardware acceleration cores. To prove these conclusions, the work m this thesis is focused on two of the basic enabling technologies that support mobile video applications, namely the Shape Adaptive Discrete Cosine Transform (SA-DCT) and its inverse, the SA-IDCT. The hardware architectures presented in this work have been designed with energy efficiency in mind. This goal is achieved by employing high level techniques such as redundant computation elimination, parallelism and low switching computation structures. Both architectures compare favourably against the relevant pnor art in the literature. The SA-DCT/IDCT technologies are instances of a more general computation - namely, both are Constant Matrix Multiplication (CMM) operations. Thus, this thesis also proposes an algorithm for the efficient hardware design of any general CMM-based enabling technology. The proposed algorithm leverages the effective solution search capability of genetic programming. A bonus feature of the proposed modelling approach is that it is further amenable to hardware acceleration. Another bonus feature is an early exit mechanism that achieves large search space reductions .Results show an improvement on state of the art algorithms with future potential for even greater savings

    Analog parallel processor solutions for video encoding

    This thesis deals with Cellular Nonlinear Network (CNN) analog parallel processor networks and their implementations in current video coding standards. The target applications are low-power video encoders within 3rd generation mobile terminals. The video codecs of such mobile terminals are defined by either the MPEG-4/H.263 or H.264 video standard. All of these standards are based on the block-based hybrid approach. As block-based motion estimation (ME) is responsible for most of the power consumption of such hybrid video encoders, this thesis deals mostly with low-power ME implementations. Low-power solutions are introduced at both the algorithmic and hardware levels. On the algorithmic level, the introduced implementations are derived from a segmentation algorithm, which has previously been partly realized. The first introduced algorithm reduces the computational complexity of ME within an object-based MPEG-4 encoder. The use of this algorithm enables a 60% drop in the power consumption of Full Search ME. The second algorithm calculates a near-optimal block-size partition for H.264 motion estimation. With this algorithm, the use of computationally complex Lagrange optimization in H.264 ME is not required. The third algorithm reduces the shape bit-rate of an object-based MPEG-4 encoder. On the hardware level a CNN-type ME architecture is introduced. The architecture includes connections and circuitry to fully realize block-based ME. The analog ME implemented with this architecture is capable of lower power than comparable digital realizations. A 9×9 test chip has also been realized. Additionally implemented is a digital predictive ME realization that takes advantage of the introduced partition algorithm. Although the IC layout of the ME algorithm was drawn, the design was verified as an FPGA.reviewe
