    Mapping web personal learning environments

    A recent trend in web development is to build platforms which are carefully designed to host a plurality of software components (sometimes called widgets or plugins) which can be organized or combined (mashed-up) at user's convenience to create personalized environments. The same holds true for the web development of educational applications. The degree of personalization can depend on the role of users such as in traditional virtual learning environment, where the components are chosen by a teacher in the context of a course. Or, it can be more opened as in a so-called personalized learning environment (PLE). It now exists a wide array of available web platforms exhibiting different functionalities but all built on the same concept of aggregating components together to support different tasks and scenarios. There is now an overlap between the development of PLE and the more generic developments in web 2.0 applications such as social network sites. This article shows that 6 more or less independent dimensions allow to map the functionalities of these platforms: the screen dimensionmaps the visual integration, the data dimension maps the portability of data, the temporal dimension maps the coupling between participants, the social dimension maps the grouping of users, the activity dimension maps the structuring of end users–interactions with the environment, and the runtime dimensionmaps the flexibility in accessing the system from different end points. Finally these dimensions are used to compare 6 familiar Web platforms which could potentially be used in the construction of a PLE

    Semantic query languages for knowledge-based web services in a construction context

    Since the early 2000s, different frameworks were set up to enable web-based collaboration in building projects. Unfortunately, none of these initiatives was granted a long life. Recently, however, the use of web technologies in the building industry has been gaining momentum again, considered some promising technologies for reaching a more interoperable BIM practice. Specifically, this relates to (1) Linked Data and Semantic Web technologies, and (2) cloud-based applications. In order to combine these into a network of interlinked applications and datastores, an agreed-upon mechanism for automatic communication and data retrieval needs to be used. Apart from the W3C standard SPARQL, often considered too high a threshold for developers to implement, there are some recent GraphQL-based solutions that simplify the querying process and its implementation into web services. In this paper, we review two recent open source technologies based on GraphQL, that enable to query Linked Data on the web: GraphQL-LD and HyperGraphQL

    Dissertação de mestrado em Engenharia de Redes e Serviços TelemáticosThe constant growth of integration and popularity of “Internet of Things” devices is affecting home automation systems, where new technologies were introduced, in the recent years for this particular sector. These automation systems integrate devices that can be anywhere in the house, connected to a home network, either through a wire or wireless connection. A home automation system can be used to control air conditioning, lighting, pool control systems, home-entertainment systems and much more. Within the field of home-entertainment systems, the best known technologies are the Digital Living Network Alliance and the Digital Audio Access Protocol, which provide interoperability to allow sharing of digital media content between devices across a home network. However, these technologies have the disadvantage of being proprietary, maintaining restrict documentation access, complex architectures and concepts and not optimal to specific purposes, like audio distribution. The main goal of this project was to prove that is possible to use standardized protocols, such as the Simple Network Manager Protocol and open source tools in order to develop a music distribution service that allows the implementation of similar features than the ones already existing proprietary technologies. As such, the implementation prototype system allows a user to manage and play audio from a music collection that is stored in a single home audio server. The system architecture enables audio streaming between the server and the various devices in the same local network. Further more, the music collection, can integrate virtual audio files that are available from external music sources, like iTunes, etc.O constante crescimento de integração e popularidade da “Internet das coisas” tem atualmente afetado sistemas de domótica, onde cada vez mais tecnologias têm vindo a ser desenvolvidas nos últimos anos para este sector em particular. Estes sistemas de domótica integram dispositivos que podem estar em qualquer parte de uma casa, ligados à rede seja através de um cabo ou por wireless. Um sistema de domótica pode ser usado para controlar: ar condicionado, iluminação, sistemas de controlo de piscinas, sistemas de entretenimento, entre outros. Na área de sistemas de entretenimento, as tecnologias mais conhecidas são Digital Living Network Alliance e Digital Audio Access Protocol, que fornecem interoperabilidade de modo a permitir a partilha de conteúdos digitais multimédia entre dispositivos que se encontram na mesma rede local. Contudo, possuem a desvantagem de serem tecnologias proprietárias, com documentação e manuais restritos, arquiteturas e conceitos complexos, e não otimizados para fins específicos, tal distribuição de áudio. O principal objetivo deste projeto foi provar que é possível usar protocolos normalizados, como o Simple Network Manager Protocol e ferramentas open source de forma a desenvolver um serviço de distribuição de música que permite a implementação de funcionalidades semelhantes às tecnologias proprietárias já existentes. Assim, o protótipo implementado permite a um utilizador gerir e reproduzir áudio de uma coleção de música que se esteja armazenada num servidor de áudio domestico. A arquitetura permite streaming de áudio entre o servidor e os diferentes dispositivos que se encontram na mesma rede local. Consequentemente, a coleção de música pode integrar ficheiros de áudio visuais que estejam acessíveis através de fontes externas de música, como por exemplo: iTunes, etc

    Stabilization and control of teleoperation systems with time delays

    A control scheme for teleoperation systems with time delay is developed based on the concept of passivity. This control method requires neither detailed knowledge of the manipulator systems nor the mathematical models of the environments, and it is applicable for any time delays. The main contribution of this method is that it is less conservative than the traditional passivity based method. In this method, the passivity controller only operates when the system loses passivity, while in a traditional passivity formulation, the controller works at all times during operation and thus adversely affect the performance of the system.;Using the proposed control scheme, a sub-system is defined that is composed of the communication channel, slave robot and the manipulated environment. This sub system is treated as a one-port network component, and passivity theory is applied to this component to assure stability. The energy flowing into the one-port network, in the form of the control command and the force feedback, is monitored. A passivity regulator is activated to maintain the passivity of the network by modifying the feedback force to the master, and thus adjust the energy exchange between the master and the communication channel.;When this method is applied, only the information at the interface between the master manipulator and the communication channel is collected and observed, there is no need for accurate or detailed knowledge of the structure or timing of the communication channel. The method can make the system lossless regardless of the feedback force, the coordinating force controlling the slave joint motions or the contact force. The approach can stabilize the system regardless of the time delay, discontinuities with environmental contact, or discretization of the physical plant. It will pose no problem when the environmental contact force is directly fed back. The results of this work show that it is advantageous to use the measured environmental force as the feedback, providing superior performance for free motion and more realistic haptic feedback for the operator from the remote environment.;Simulation and experimental results are presented to verify the proposed control scheme

    Beyond 5G URLLC Evolution: New Service Modes and Practical Considerations

    Ultra-reliable low latency communications (URLLC) arose to serve industrial IoT (IIoT) use cases within the 5G. Currently, it has inherent limitations to support future services. Based on state-of-the-art research and practical deployment experience, in this article, we introduce and advocate for three variants: broadband, scalable and extreme URLLC. We discuss use cases and key performance indicators and identify technology enablers for the new service modes.     Multi-agent systems to implement industry 4.0 components

    The fast-changing market conditions, the increased global competition and the rapid technological developments demand flexible, adaptable and reconfigurable manufacturing systems based on Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS). Aligned with CPS, the adoption of production system architectures is suitable to reduce complexity and achieve interoperability in the industrial applications. In this context, the Reference Architecture Model for Industry 4.0 (RAMI4.0) provides the guidelines to develop Industry 4.0 (I4.0) compliant solutions, considering the existing industrial standards. The so-called I4.0 components implement this model in practice, combining the physical asset with its digital representation, named Asset Administration Shell (AAS). This paper explores the use of Multi-Agent Systems (MAS) to implement the AAS functionalities, taking advantage of their inherits characteristics, e.g., autonomy, intelligence, decentralization and reconfigurability. In this context, the mapping between AAS functionalities and MAS characteristics is provided, as well as the challenges for this implementation.     Intelligent Data Storage and Retrieval for Design Optimisation – an Overview

    This paper documents the findings of a literature review conducted by the Sir Lawrence Wackett Centre for Aerospace Design Technology at RMIT University. The review investigates aspects of a proposed system for intelligent design optimisation. Such a system would be capable of efficiently storing (and compressing if required) a range of types of design data into an intelligent database. This database would be accessed by the system during subsequent design processes, allowing for search of relevant design data for re-use in later designs, allowing it to become very efficient in reducing the time for later designs as the database grows in size. Extensive research has been performed, in both theoretical aspects of the project, and practical examples of current similar systems. This research covers the areas of database systems, database queries, representation and compression of design data, geometric representation and heuristic methods for design applications.
