    Travel time estimation in congested urban networks using point detectors data

    A model for estimating travel time on short arterial links of congested urban networks, using currently available technology, is introduced in this thesis. The objective is to estimate travel time, with an acceptable level of accuracy for real-life traffic problems, such as congestion management and emergency evacuation. To achieve this research objective, various travel time estimation methods, including highway trajectories, multiple linear regression (MLR), artificial neural networks (ANN) and K –nearest neighbor (K-NN) were applied and tested on the same dataset. The results demonstrate that ANN and K-NN methods outperform linear methods by a significant margin, also, show particularly good performance in detecting congested intervals. To ensure the quality of the analysis results, set of procedures and algorithms based on traffic flow theory and test field information, were introduced to validate and clean the data used to build, train and test the different models

    Extended iCanCloud simulation framework for VANET-Cloud architectures

    International audienceWith the exponential development of cities, the traffic flow prediction has become an important step in the development of transport systems. The main purpose is to improve the logistic services and reduce the cost of the road congestion. In this paper, we propose an extended iCanCloud framework simulation to evaluate the performance of VANET-Cloud architectures. In addition, we propose a VANET-Cloud architecture uses connected traffic detectors (e.g., speed loop trap) to collect traffic data in real time. After that, these data are used to predict the traffic flow. In the simulation step, the proposed architecture was tested by the extended framework, where it provides better performances at peak hours in terms of service latency and data accuracy

    Estimation and prediction of travel time from loop detector data for intelligent transportation systems applications

    With the advent of Advanced Traveler Information Systems (ATIS), short-term travel time prediction is becoming increasingly important. Travel time can be obtained directly from instrumented test vehicles, license plate matching, probe vehicles etc., or from indirect methods such as loop detectors. Because of their wide spread deployment, travel time estimation from loop detector data is one of the most widely used methods. However, the major criticism about loop detector data is the high probability of error due to the prevalence of equipment malfunctions. This dissertation presents methodologies for estimating and predicting travel time from the loop detector data after correcting for errors. The methodology is a multi-stage process, and includes the correction of data, estimation of travel time and prediction of travel time, and each stage involves the judicious use of suitable techniques. The various techniques selected for each of these stages are detailed below. The test sites are from the freeways in San Antonio, Texas, which are equipped with dual inductance loop detectors and AVI. ?? Constrained non-linear optimization approach by Generalized Reduced Gradient (GRG) method for data reduction and quality control, which included a check for the accuracy of data from a series of detectors for conservation of vehicles, in addition to the commonly adopted checks. ?? A theoretical model based on traffic flow theory for travel time estimation for both off-peak and peak traffic conditions using flow, occupancy and speed values obtained from detectors. ?? Application of a recently developed technique called Support Vector Machines (SVM) for travel time prediction. An Artificial Neural Network (ANN) method is also developed for comparison. Thus, a complete system for the estimation and prediction of travel time from loop detector data is detailed in this dissertation. Simulated data from CORSIM simulation software is used for the validation of the results

    Crowdsourcing traffic data for travel time estimation

    Travel time estimation is a fundamental measure used in routing and navigation applications, in particular in emerging intelligent transportation systems (ITS). For example, many users may prefer the fastest route to their destination and would rely on real-time predicted travel times. It also helps real-time traffic management and traffic light control. Accurate estimation of travel time requires collecting a lot of real-time data from road networks. This data can be collected using a wide variety of sources like inductive loop detectors, video cameras, radio frequency identification (RFID) transponders etc. But these systems include deployment of infrastructure which has some limitations and drawbacks. The main drawbacks in these modes are the high cost and the high probability of error caused by prevalence of equipment malfunctions and in the case of sensor based methods, the problem of spatial coverage.;As an alternative to traditional way of collecting data using expensive equipment, development of cellular & mobile technology allows for leveraging embedded GPS sensors in smartphones carried by millions of road users. Crowd-sourcing GPS data will allow building traffic monitoring systems that utilize this opportunity for the purpose of accurate and real-time prediction of traffic measures. However, the effectiveness of these systems have not yet been proven or shown in real applications. In this thesis, we study some of the current available data sets and identify the requirements for accurate prediction. In our work, we propose the design for a crowd-sourcing traffic application, including an android-based mobile client and a server architecture. We also develop map-matching method. More importantly, we present prediction methods using machine learning techniques such as support vector regression.;Machine learning provides an alternative to traditional statistical method such as using averaged historic data for estimation of travel time. Machine Learning techniques played a key role in estimation in the last two decades. They are proved by providing better accuracy in estimation and in classification. However, employing a machine learning technique in any application requires creative modeling of the system and its sensory data. In this thesis, we model the road network as a graph and train different models for different links on the road. Modeling a road network as graph with nodes and links enables the learner to capture patterns occurring on each segment of road, thereby providing better accuracy. To evaluate the prediction models, we use three sets of data out of which two sets are collected using mobile probing and one set is generated using VISSIM traffic simulator. The results show that crowdsourcing is only more accurate than traditional statistical methods if the input values for input data are very close to the actual values. In particular, when speed of vehicles on a link are concerned, we need to provide the machine learning model with data that is only few minutes old; using average speed of vehicles, for example from the past half hour, as is usually seen in many web based traffic information sources may not allow for better performance

    Statistical modelling and analysis of traffic: a dynamic approach

    In both developed and emerging-economies, major cities continue to experience increasing traffic congestion. To address this issue, complex Traffic Management Systems (TMS) are employed in recent years to help manage traffic. These systems fuse traffic-surveillance-related information from a variety of sensors deployed across traffic networks. A TMS requires real-time information to make effective control decisions and to deliver trustworthy information to users, such as travel time, congestion level, etc. There are three fundamental inputs required by TMS, namely, traffic volume, vehicular speed, and traffic density. Using conventional traffic loop detectors one can directly measure flow and velocity. However, traffic density is more difficult to measure. The situation becomes more difficult for multi-lane motorways due to drivers lane-change behaviour. This research investigates statistical modelling and analysis of traffic flow. It contributes to the literature of transportation and traffic management and research in several aspects. First, it takes into account lane-changes in traffic modelling through incorporating a Markov chain model to describe the drivers lane-change behaviour. Secondly, the lane change probabilities between two adjacent lanes are not assumed to be fixed but rather they depend on the current traffic condition. A discrete choice model is used to capture drivers lane choice behaviour. The drivers choice probabilities are modelled by several traffic-condition related attributes such as vehicle time headway, traffic density and speed. This results in a highly nonlinear state equation for traffic density. To address the issue of high nonlinearity of the state space model, the EKF and UKF is used to estimate the traffic density recursively. In addition, a new transformation approach has been proposed to transform the observation equation from a nonlinear form to a linear one so that the potential approximation in the EKF & UKF can be avoided. Numerical studies have been conducted to investigate the performance of the developed method. The proposed method outperformed the existing methods for traffic density estimation in simulation studies. Furthermore, it is shown that the computational cost for updating the estimate of traffic densities for a multi-lane motorway is kept at a minimum so that online applications are feasible in practice. Consequently the traffic densities can be monitored and the relevant information can be fed into the traffic management system of interest

    Optimizing city-scale traffic through modeling observations of vehicle movements

    The capability of traffic-information systems to sense the movement of millions of users and offer trip plans through mobile phones has enabled a new way of optimizing city traffic dynamics, turning transportation big data into insights and actions in a closed-loop and evaluating this approach in the real world. Existing research has applied dynamic Bayesian networks and deep neural networks to make traffic predictions from floating car data, utilized dynamic programming and simulation approaches to identify how people normally travel with dynamic traffic assignment for policy research, and introduced Markov decision processes and reinforcement learning to optimally control traffic signals. However, none of these works utilized floating car data to suggest departure times and route choices in order to optimize city traffic dynamics. In this paper, we present a study showing that floating car data can lead to lower average trip time, higher on-time arrival ratio, and higher Charypar-Nagel score compared with how people normally travel. The study is based on optimizing a partially observable discrete-time decision process and is evaluated in one synthesized scenario, one partly synthesized scenario, and three real-world scenarios. This study points to the potential of a "living lab" approach where we learn, predict, and optimize behaviors in the real world

    Deep learning-based multi-target regression for traffic-related air pollution forecasting

    Traffic-related air pollution (TRAP) remains one of the main contributors to urban pollution and its impact on climate change cannot be overemphasised. Experts in developed countries strive to make optimal use of traffic and air quality data to gain valuable insights into its effect on public health. Over the years, the research community has developed advanced methods of forecasting traffic-related pollution using several machine learning methods albeit with persistent accuracy and insufficient data challenges. Despite the potentials of emerging techniques such as multi-target deep neural network to achieve optimal solutions, they are yet to be fully exploited in the air quality space due to their complexity and unavailability of the right training data. It is to this end that this study investigates the impact of integrating an updated data set including road elevation, vehicle emissions factor and background maps with traffic flow, weather and pollution data on TRAP forecasting. To explore the robustness and adaptability of our methodology, the study was carried out in one major city (London), one smaller city (Newport) and one large town (Chepstow) in the United Kingdom. The forecasting task was modelled as a multi-target regression problem and experiments were carried out to predict N O 2 , P M 2 . 5 and P M 10 concentrations over multiple timesteps. Fastai’s tabular model was used alongside prophet’s time-series model and scikit-learn’s multioutputregressor for experimentation with fastai recording the overall best performance. Statistical tests run using Friedman and Wilcoxon test also revealed the significance of the fastai model with a p-values < 0.05. Finally, a model explanation tool was then used to reveal the most and least influential features from the newly curated data set. Results showed traffic count and speed were part of the most contributing features. This result demonstrates the impact of these and other introduced features on TRAP forecasting and will serve as a foundation for related studies
