    Analysis of the IEEE 802.15.4a ultra wideband physical layer through wireless sensor network simulations in OMNET++

    Wireless Sensor Networks are the main representative of pervasive computing in large-scale physical environments. These networks consist of a large number of small, wireless devices embedded in the physical world to be used for surveillance, environmental monitoring or other data capture, processing and transfer applications. Ultra wideband has emerged as one of the newest and most promising concepts for wireless technology. Considering all its advantages it seems a likely communication technology candidate for future wireless sensor networks. This paper considers the viability of ultra wideband technology in wireless sensor networks by employing an IEEE 802.15.4a low-rate ultra wideband physical layer model in the OMNET++ simulation environment. An elaborate investigation into the inner workings of the IEEE 802.15.4a UWB physical layer is performed. Simulation experiments are used to provide a detailed analysis of the performance of the IEEE 802.15.4a UWB physical layer over several communication distances. A proposal for a cognitive, adaptive communication approach to optimize for speed and distance is also presented.     Processing techniques for improved radar detection in spiky clutter

    The problem of improved radar detection of targets embedded in spiky clutter is addressed. Two main areas where improvements may be possible are investigated, namely improved clutter suppression by doppler filtering, and improved Constant False Alarm Rate (CFAR) processing. The clutter suppression performance of several doppler processors is quantified under a wide range of conditions. It is shown that in spatially homogeneous clutter ideal optimal (Hsiao) filters offer 2 to 3 dB higher improvement factor than conventional techniques. Adaptive Hsiao filters are evaluated under conditions of spatially heterogeneous clutter, and it is shown that practical losses due to filter adaptivity and spectral heterogeneity will outweigh the superior performance of ideal Hsiao filters in homogeneous clutter. It is concluded that improved doppler filtering offers little scope for improving detection performance in spiky clutter, and that more significant benefits are to be gained through improved CFAR processing. The performance of three current generation CFAR processors is evaluated in spatially uncorrelated K-distributed clutter to quantify detection losses. It is shown that losses of in excess of 10 dB can be expected in spiky clutter. Reducing the loss by exploitation of any spatial correlation of the underlying clutter power is investigated. To this end a mathematically rigorous model for spatially correlated K-distributed clutter is derived. An improved CFAR processor based on optimal weighting of reference cells is formulated and evaluated. It is shown that in highly correlated clutter CFAR loss can be reduced by 2 to 5 dB compared to Cell Averaging CFAR processors. An alternative "RDT-CFAR" processor is formulated to eliminate reliance on spatial correlation, and this is shown to reduce CFAR loss by more than 10 dB in spectrally homogeneous spiky clutter. However, an increase in false alarm rate in clutter without constant spectrum is demonstrated. The RDT-CFAR processor has been modified to eliminate dependence on surrounding range bins. The resulting "δ-CFAR" processor reduces CFAR loss by more than 10 dB in even moderately spiky clutter. It is also immune to extraneous targets and clutter edges, and its false alarm performance is insensitive to clutter spikiness

    Statistical Analysis of Coherent Monostatic and Bistatic Radar Sea Clutter

    Radar sea clutter analysis has been an important area of radar research for many years. Very limited research has been carried out on coherent monostatic sea clutter analysis and even less on bistatic sea clutter. This has left a significant gap in the global scientific knowledge within this area. This thesis describes research carried out to analyse, quantify and model coherent sea clutter statistics from multiple radar sources. The ultimate goal of the research is to improve maritime radars' ability to compensate for clutter and achieve effective detection of targets on or over the sea surface. The first analyses used monostatic data gathered during the fight trials of the Thales Searchwater 2000 AEW radar. A further sea clutter trials database from CSIR was then used to investigate the variation of clutter statistics with look angle and grazing angle. Finally simultaneous monostatic and bistatic sea clutter data recorded in South Africa using the S-band UCL radar system NetRAD were analysed. No simultaneous monostatic and bistatic coherent analysis has ever been reported before in the open literature. The datasets recorded included multiple bistatic angles at both horizontal and vertical polarisations. Throughout the analysis real data have been compared to accepted theoretic models of sea clutter. An additional metric of comparison was investigated relating to the area of information theoretic techniques. Information theory is a significant subject area, and some concepts from it have been applied in this research. In summary this research has produced quantifiable and novel results on the characteristics of sea clutter statistics as a function of Doppler. Analysis has been carried out on a wide range of monostatic and bistatic data. The results of this research will be extremely valuable in developing sea clutter suppression algorithms and thus improving detection performance in future maritime radar designs

    Electronic warfare self-protection of battlefield helicopters : a holistic view

    The dissertation seeks to increase understanding of electronic warfare (EW) self-protection (EWSP) of battlefield helicopters by taking a holistic (systems) view on EWSP. It also evaluates the methodologies used in the research and their suitability as descriptive tools in communication between various EWSP stakeholders. The interpretation of the term "holistic view" is a central theme to the dissertation. The research methodology is bottom-up – which is necessary since no previous work exists that could guide the study – and progresses from analysis to synthesis. Initially several methods are evaluated for presenting findings on EWSP, including high-level system simulation such as Forrester system dynamics (FSD). The analysis is conducted by a comprehensive literature review on EW and other areas that are believed to be of importance to the holistic view. Combat scenarios, intelligence, EW support, validation, training, and delays have major influence on the effectiveness of the EWSP suite; while the initial procurement decision on the EWSP suite sets limits to what can be achieved later. The need for a vast support structure for EWSP means that countries with limited intelligence and other resources become dependent on allies for support; that is, the question of EWSP effectiveness becomes political. The synthesis shows that a holistic view on EWSP of battlefield helicopters cannot be bounded in the temporal or hierarchical (organizational) senses. FSD is found to be helpful as a quality assurance tool, but refinements are needed if FSD is to be useful as a general discussion tool. The area of survivability is found to be the best match for the holistic view – for an EWSP suprasystem. A global survivability paradigm is defined as the ultimate holistic view on EWSP. It is suggested that future research should be top-down and aiming at promoting the global survivability paradigm. The survivability paradigm would give EWSP a natural framework in which its merits can be assessed objectively.reviewe

    Dissertação de mestrado integrado em Engenharia Física (área de especialização em Dispositivos, Microssistemas e Nanotecnologias)The core focus of the work reported herein is the fulfillment of a functional Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) sensor to validate the direct Time-of-Flight (ToF) ranging concept and the acquisition of critical knowledge regarding pivotal aspects jeopardizing the sensor’s performance, for forthcoming improvements aiming a realistic sensor targeted towards automotive applications. Hereupon, the ToF LiDAR system is implemented through an architecture encompassing both optical and electronical functions and is subsequently characterized under a sequence of test procedures usually applied in benchmarking of LiDAR sensors. The design employs a hybrid edge-emitting laser diode (pulsed at 6kHz, 46ns temporal FWHM, 7ns rise-time; 919nm wavelength with 5nm FWHM), a PIN photodiode to detect the back-reflected radiation, a transamplification stage and two Time-to-Digital Converters (TDCs), with leading-edge discrimination electronics to mark the transit time between emission and detection events. Furthermore, a flexible modular design is adopted using two separate Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs), comprising the transmitter (TX) and the receiver (RX), i.e. detection and signal processing. The overall output beam divergence is 0.4º×1º and an optical peak power of 60W (87% overall throughput) is realized. The sensor is tested indoors from 0.56 to 4.42 meters, and the distance is directly estimated from the pulses transit time. The precision within these working distances ranges from 4cm to 7cm, reflected in a Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) between 12dB and 18dB. The design requires a calibration procedure to correct systematic errors in the range measurements, induced by two sources: the timing offset due to architecture-inherent differences in the optoelectronic paths and a supplementary bias resulting from the design, which renders an intensity dependence and is denoted time-walk. The calibrated system achieves a mean accuracy of 1cm. Two distinct target materials are used for characterization and performance evaluation: a metallic automotive paint and a diffuse material. This selection is representative of two extremes of actual LiDAR applications. The optical and electronic characterization is thoroughly detailed, including the recognition of a good agreement between empirical observations and simulations in ZEMAX, for optical design, and in a SPICE software, for the electrical subsystem. The foremost meaningful limitation of the implemented design is identified as an outcome of the leading-edge discrimination. A proposal for a Constant Fraction Discriminator addressing sub-millimetric accuracy is provided to replace the previous signal processing element. This modification is mandatory to virtually eliminate the aforementioned systematic bias in range sensing due to the intensity dependency. A further crucial addition is a scanning mechanism to supply the required Field-of-View (FOV) for automotive usage. The opto-electromechanical guidelines to interface a MEMS micromirror scanner, achieving a 46º×17º FOV, with the LiDAR sensor are furnished. Ultimately, a proof-of-principle to the use of polarization in material classification for advanced processing is carried out, aiming to complement the ToF measurements. The original design is modified to include a variable wave retarder, allowing the simultaneous detection of orthogonal linear polarization states using a single detector. The material classification with polarization sensing is tested with the previously referred materials culminating in an 87% and 11% degree of linear polarization retention from the metallic paint and the diffuse material, respectively, computed by Stokes parameters calculus. The procedure was independently validated under the same conditions with a micro-polarizer camera (92% and 13% polarization retention).O intuito primordial do trabalho reportado no presente documento é o desenvolvimento de um sensor LiDAR funcional, que permita validar o conceito de medição direta do tempo de voo de pulsos óticos para a estimativa de distância, e a aquisição de conhecimento crítico respeitante a aspetos fundamentais que prejudicam a performance do sensor, ambicionando melhorias futuras para um sensor endereçado para aplicações automóveis. Destarte, o sistema LiDAR é implementado através de uma arquitetura que engloba tanto funções óticas como eletrónicas, sendo posteriormente caracterizado através de uma sequência de testes experimentais comumente aplicáveis em benchmarking de sensores LiDAR. O design tira partido de um díodo de laser híbrido (pulsado a 6kHz, largura temporal de 46ns; comprimento de onda de pico de 919nm e largura espetral de 5nm), um fotodíodo PIN para detetar a radiação refletida, um andar de transamplificação e dois conversores tempo-digital, com discriminação temporal com threshold constante para marcar o tempo de trânsito entre emissão e receção. Ademais, um design modular flexível é adotado através de duas PCBs independentes, compondo o transmissor e o recetor (deteção e processamento de sinal). A divergência global do feixe emitido para o ambiente circundante é 0.4º×1º, apresentando uma potência ótica de pico de 60W (eficiência de 87% na transmissão). O sensor é testado em ambiente fechado, entre 0.56 e 4.42 metros. A precisão dentro das distâncias de trabalho varia entre 4cm e 7cm, o que se reflete numa razão sinal-ruído entre 12dB e 18dB. O design requer calibração para corrigir erros sistemáticos nas distâncias adquiridas devido a duas fontes: o desvio no ToF devido a diferenças nos percursos optoeletrónicos, inerentes à arquitetura, e uma dependência adicional da intensidade do sinal refletido, induzida pela técnica de discriminação implementada e denotada time-walk. A exatidão do sistema pós-calibração perfaz um valor médio de 1cm. Dois alvos distintos são utilizados durante a fase de caraterização e avaliação performativa: uma tinta metálica aplicada em revestimentos de automóveis e um material difusor. Esta seleção é representativa de dois cenários extremos em aplicações reais do LiDAR. A caraterização dos subsistemas ótico e eletrónico é minuciosamente detalhada, incluindo a constatação de uma boa concordância entre observações empíricas e simulações óticas em ZEMAX e elétricas num software SPICE. O principal elemento limitante do design implementado é identificado como sendo a técnica de discriminação adotada. Por conseguinte, é proposta a substituição do anterior bloco por uma técnica de discriminação a uma fração constante do pulso de retorno, com exatidões da ordem sub-milimétrica. Esta modificação é imperativa para eliminar o offset sistemático nas medidas de distância, decorrente da dependência da intensidade do sinal. Uma outra inclusão de extrema relevância é um mecanismo de varrimento que assegura o cumprimento dos requisitos de campo de visão para aplicações automóveis. As diretrizes para a integração de um micro-espelho no sensor concebido são providenciadas, permitindo atingir um campo de visão de 46º×17º. Conclusivamente, é feita uma prova de princípio para a utilização da polarização como complemento das medições do tempo de voo, de modo a suportar a classificação de materiais em processamento avançado. A arquitetura original é modificada para incluir uma lâmina de atraso variável, permitindo a deteção de estados de polarização ortogonais com um único fotodetetor. A classificação de materiais através da aferição do estado de polarização da luz refletida é testada para os materiais supramencionados, culminando numa retenção de polarização de 87% (tinta metálica) e 11% (difusor), calculados através dos parâmetros de Stokes. O procedimento é independentemente validado com uma câmara polarimétrica nas mesmas condições (retenção de 92% e 13%)

    Advanced adaptive compensation system for free-space optical communications

    Massive amounts of information are created daily in commercial fields like earth observation, that must be downloaded to earth ground stations in the short time of a satellite pass. Today, much of the collected information must be dropped due to lack of bandwidth, and laser downlinks can offer tenths of gigabits throughput solving this bottleneck limitation. In a down-link scenario, the performance of laser satellite communications is limited due to atmospheric turbulence, which causes fluctuations in the intensity and the phase of the received signal leading to an increase in bit error probability. In principle, a single-aperture phase-compensated receiver, based on adaptive optics, can overcome atmospheric limitations by adaptive tracking and correction of atmospherically induced aberrations. However, under strong-turbulence situations, the effectiveness of traditional adaptive optics systems is severely compromised. In such scenarios, sensor-less techniques offer robustness, hardware simplicity, and easiness of implementation and integration at a reduced cost, but the state-of-the-art approaches still require too many iterations to perform the correction, exceeding the temporal coherence of the field and thus falling behind the field evolution. This thesis proposes a new iterative AO technique for strong turbulence compensation that reduces the correction time, bridging the limitation of similar systems in lasercom applications. It is based on the standard sensor-less system design, but it additionally uses a short-exposure focal intensity image to accelerate the correction. The technique combines basic principles of Fourier optics, image processing, and quadratic signal optimization to correct the wave-front. This novel approach directly updates the phases of the most intense focal-plane speckles, maximizing the power coupled into a single-mode fiber convexly. Numerical analyses show that this method has a robust and excellent performance under very strong turbulence. Laboratory results confirm that a focal speckle pattern can be used to accelerate the iterative compensation. This technique delivers nearly twofold bandwidth reduction compared with standard methods, and sufficient signal gain and stability to allow high throughput data transmission with nearly error-free performance in emulated satellite downlink scenarios. A property highlight is the in-advance knowledge of the required number of iterations, allowing on-demand management of the loop bandwidth in different turbulent regimes. Besides remaining conceptually and technically simple, it opens a new insight to iterative solutions that may lead to the development of new methods. With further refinement, this technique can surely contribute to making possible the use of iterative solutions in laser communicationsSatélites de observación de la tierra diariamente generan gigantescas cantidades de datos que deben ser enviados a estaciones terrenas. Enlaces ópticos pueden solucionar esta limitación ofreciendo multi-gigabit de ancho de banda. Sin embargo, el desempeño de un downlink laser está limitado por la turbulencia atmosférica, la cual induce variaciones en la intensidad y la fase de la señal recibida incrementando la probabilidad de error en los datos recibidos. En principio, un receptor basado en una apertura simple utilizando óptica adaptativa puede corregir las aberraciones de fase inducidas por la atmósfera, mejorando el canal de transmisión. Sin embargo, la eficiencia de los sistemas de óptica adaptativa tradicionales se ve seriamente reducida en situaciones de turbulencia fuerte. En tales escenarios, técnicas iterativas ofrecen mayor robustez, simplicidad de diseño e implementación, así como también facilidad de integración a un costo reducido. Desafortunadamente, dicha tecnología aún requiere demasiadas iteraciones para corregir la fase distorsionada, excediendo el tiempo de coherencia del frente de onda. Esta tesis propone una nueva técnica iterativa de óptica adaptativa capaz de reducir el tiempo de convergencia en escenarios de turbulencia fuerte. La técnica utiliza el diseño tradicional de los sistemas de corrección iterativos, agregando el uso de una imagen focal de intensidad para acelerar el proceso de corrección del campo distorsionado. En dicha técnica se combinan principios básicos de óptica de Fourier, procesamiento de imagen, y optimización cuadrática de la señal para corregir el frente de onda. De esta forma, la fase de los puntos focales de mayor intensidad (speckles) puede modificarse directamente y con ello maximizar de forma convexa la potencia acoplada en fibra. Los análisis numéricos demuestran robustez y un excelente desempeño en escenarios de turbulencia fuerte. Los resultados de laboratorio confirman que el moteado de intensidad puede utilizarse para acelerar la corrección iterativa. Esta técnica utiliza la mitad del ancho de banda requerido con la técnica tradicional, al mismo tiempo que ofrece suficiente ganancia y estabilidad de la señal para lograr enlaces ópticos con muy baja probabilidad de error. Al mismo tiempo, la técnica propuesta permite conocer con anticipación el número total de iteraciones y posibilita la administración bajo demanda del ancho de banda requerido en diferentes escenarios de turbulencia.     Newspapers and the popular scientific press today publish many examples of highly impressive images. These images range, for example, from those showing regions of star birth in the distant Universe to the extent of the stratospheric ozone depletion over Antarctica in springtime, and to those regions of the human brain affected by Alzheimer’s disease. Processed digitally to generate spectacular images, often in false colour, they all make an immediate and deep impact on the viewer’s imagination and understanding. Professor Jonathan Blackledge’s erudite but very useful new treatise Digital Image Processing: Mathematical and Computational Methods explains both the underlying theory and the techniques used to produce such images in considerable detail. It also provides many valuable example problems - and their solutions - so that the reader can test his/her grasp of the physical, mathematical and numerical aspects of the particular topics and methods discussed. As such, this magnum opus complements the author’s earlier work Digital Signal Processing. Both books are a wonderful resource for students who wish to make their careers in this fascinating and rapidly developing field which has an ever increasing number of areas of application. The strengths of this large book lie in: • excellent explanatory introduction to the subject; • thorough treatment of the theoretical foundations, dealing with both electromagnetic and acoustic wave scattering and allied techniques; • comprehensive discussion of all the basic principles, the mathematical transforms (e.g. the Fourier and Radon transforms), their interrelationships and, in particular, Born scattering theory and its application to imaging systems modelling; discussion in detail - including the assumptions and limitations - of optical imaging, seismic imaging, medical imaging (using ultrasound), X-ray computer aided tomography, tomography when the wavelength of the probing radiation is of the same order as the dimensions of the scatterer, Synthetic Aperture Radar (airborne or spaceborne), digital watermarking and holography; detail devoted to the methods of implementation of the analytical schemes in various case studies and also as numerical packages (especially in C/C++); • coverage of deconvolution, de-blurring (or sharpening) an image, maximum entropy techniques, Bayesian estimators, techniques for enhancing the dynamic range of an image, methods of filtering images and techniques for noise reduction; • discussion of thresholding, techniques for detecting edges in an image and for contrast stretching, stochastic scattering (random walk models) and models for characterizing an image statistically; • investigation of fractal images, fractal dimension segmentation, image texture, the coding and storing of large quantities of data, and image compression such as JPEG; • valuable summary of the important results obtained in each Chapter given at its end; • suggestions for further reading at the end of each Chapter.
