The impact of employees' working relations in creating and retaining trust: the case of the Bahrain Olympic Committee
Introduction: This thesis investigates the impact of employees’ working relations in creating, maintaining and retaining trust in the Bahrain Olympic Committee (BOC).
Aim: The main aim of this thesis is to determine how the three groups of Organisational Trust variables, namely Social System Elements (SSE), Factors of Trustworthiness (FoT) and Third-Party Gossip (TPG), affect employees’ Organisational Trust (OTR) in the BOC and promote Organisational Citizenship Behaviour (OCB). To answer this main aim, a conceptual framework was created that focused on exploring the following research aims: (1) the interrelationship between SSE and FoT, (2) the effect of SSE on OTR, (3) the impact of TPG on OTR and (4) the effect of OTR on overall OCB.
Methodology: The study uses a mixed-method case study research style that included in-depth semi-structured interviews with 17 managers, an online questionnaire survey with 320 employees of the BOC and an analysis of the BOC’s Annual Reports from 2015 to 2018.
Results: The qualitative and quantitative findings indicate, firstly, that there is a significant interrelationship between SSE and FoT, establishing that SSE’s perception of organisational justice (OJ), including that FoTs benevolence and integrity as the most important factors in yielding employees’ trust in the BOC. Secondly, it has been established that SSEs have significant direct and indirect effects on OTR. Thirdly, negative and positive TPG concurrently occurred in the BOC and the prevalence of negative TPG poses more impact on OTR. Finally, this study’s findings demonstrated OTR’s effect in generating OCB, including that Civic Virtue was rated as the most preferred of the five OCB themes; this indicates the managers’ and the employees’ strong emotional attachment and support of the activities taking place at the BOC.
Contributions: Overall, this thesis substantially contributes to OTR literature, particularly in the context of the Middle East. It also proposes several insightful recommendations for future research and practical implications for practitioners in the field of Organisational Trust
The University as a Socio-Material Assemblage:Promotional Videos—Codes, Territories, and Globalization
The objective of this thesis is to explore and subsequently develop the concept of the university as a socio-material assemblage with regard to three key concepts of assemblage theory: codes, territories, and globalization (different from the traditional views of globalization). The thesis does this building on a multimodal analysis of data gathered from 26 promotional YouTube videos from UK and Canadian universities. It introduces a new middle-range (mesolevel) theoretical framework by combining concepts from assemblage theory (AT) (DeLanda, 2006; Deleuze & Guattari, 2013), and the inquiry graphics approach (IG) (Lacković, 2020). The methodology focuses on exploring the meanings of the universities’ spaces, physical objects, actors (human and non-human), and the relationships among actors through inquiry graphics analytical lenses. It then establishes codes and territories based on the analysis that territorialize the university as an assemblage, as well as the decodifying and deterritorializing processes within it. Finally, it analyses the observed codes and territories through the lenses of homogenization and hybridization globalization theories. The thesis concludes that the university can be conceptualized and interpreted as a socio-material assemblage whose components are interrelated and have both material and social expressive roles. Further, codes and territories are defined by the strength of the links between their iconic and symbolic expressions. Each university assemblage is connected to other assemblages through the various multi-layered networks that each component belongs to, yet the interaction among the components of an assemblage is interpreted within its specific territories, codes, and semiotic systems. These in turn, are defined by applying the semiotic principles of the IG approach. Finally, the thesis makes three major contributions: it conceptualizes the university as a socio-material assemblage, it develops a middle-range theoretical framework by combining concepts from assemblage theory and the inquiry graphics approach that can be applied to understand other sociomaterial assemblages, and it explains the relation between globalization, territorialization and codification of universities as socio-material assemblages
Writing Facts
»Fact« is one of the most crucial inventions of modern times. Susanne Knaller discusses the functions of this powerful notion in the arts and the sciences, its impact on aesthetic models and systems of knowledge. The practice of writing provides an effective procedure to realize and to understand facts. This concerns preparatory procedures, formal choices, models of argumentation, and narrative patterns. By considering »writing facts« and »writing facts«, the volume shows why and how »facts« are a result of knowledge, rules, and norms as well as of description, argumentation, and narration. This approach allows new perspectives on »fact« and its impact on modernity
The Future of New Testament Theology
This collection of essays appears at the confluence of two major streams—the flowering of the “biblical theology movement” in a range of New Testament theologies published in the past two or three decades and the recent emergence of significant contributions to reflection on and the practice of theological interpretation of the Bible. To some, these two interests overlap enough to parade them under a single banner. To others, these are disparate approaches that draw on and display competing methodological commitments. Seasoned scholars and relative newcomers to the conversation orient readers to these concerns, not so much to resolve these differences but to explore them with an eye to the future of theological work with the New Testament
Temporary career transition: a case study of the loan transfer process and experience in the English professional football environment
The current PhD explores loan transfers in English professional football as a
temporary transition. In sport, career termination has initially been prioritised, with
wider transitions gaining greater attention over time (see: Ivarsson et al., 2018; Taylor
and Ogilvie, 1994). However, little attention has been given to supporting and
preparing individuals for permanent and temporary transfers in football. This is
particularly important to explore given the introduction, yet lack of evaluation, of the
Elite Player Performance Plan (EPPP) in 2012, which intended to increase holistic
development and home grown talent development in England (Horrocks et al., 2016).
To address this research gap, this thesis adopts a qualitative case study, drawing on
interviews and document analysis, to gain in-depth insight to the experiences of an
elite, high quality sample of players and staff across a range of Premier League and
Championship clubs with regards to the loan process. The objectives of the research
were to: a) explore the role of the Loan Managers (LMs) and their responsibilities in
supporting loan players and processes; b) understand the perspectives of wider club
staff, LMs and players to explore the loan process as a novel temporary transition; and
c) develop recommendations regarding the LM role and broader loans process for
individuals, clubs and policy-makers. There were a range of significant insights and
novel contributions when addressing the objectives, including the lack of clarity for
LMs and their day to day responsibilities. Similarly, consideration of wider perspectives
allowed understanding of multi-disciplinary team (MDT) involvement as well as wider
support and decision-making processes surrounding loan processes. Additionally, the
current research recommends that professional football clubs ensure that a support
structure is provided for LMs, whereby National Governing Bodies (NGBs) and
organisations (e.g. Football Association; FA, English Premier League; EPL) could
provide more formal support networks across clubs and leagues to ensure that sharing
of best practice is in place. This may also help clubs and wider organisations place
greater value on the loan transfer process, especially in line with the EPPP’s
prioritisation of holistic development of homegrown talent, along with continued
developments implemented by Fédération Internationale de Football Association
(FIFA, 2022) regarding loan regulations
Effects of Sarbanes-Oxley Act 2002 on the Quality of Corporate Reporting by UK Listed Companies
The Sarbanes-Oxley Act 2002 (SOA) was passed in the US in direct response to the spectacular collapse of Enron and subsequently Arthur Andersen, one of the then Big 5 Audit firms in the USA. We utilized institutional theory to study the extent to which UK financial reporting practices have changed by the passage of this Act by examining the corporate governance sections of selected financial reports. We examined the financial reports of 5 UK companies listed in the US and 5 UK only listed against the corporate governance introductions, internal control disclosures, audit committee disclosures, and external auditors reports in the pre and post-SOA period (2000-2016) and found that whereas the UK SOA compliant companies made all the necessary adjustments to comply with the Act, the UK only listed companies also began making similar changes in their disclosures when there was no such requirement in the UK. We have observed that the standard and quantity of information provided by UK companies listed in the US in corporate disclosures have improved during the SOA period when compared to the pre-SOA period. Likewise, we have noticed a similar trend in the corporate disclosures of UK-only listed companies in the post-SOA period compared to the period preceding it. Overall, we conclude that there has been a substantial decrease in the use of generic language and boiler plateism in both sets of our sample companies' corporate and audit reports during the post-SOA period. Based on these findings, we suggest that the SOA has had a favourable impact on corporate reporting in the UK. Our research adds to the ongoing modifications to the UK Corporate Governance framework, where the Financial Reporting Council is presently adopting a UK SOx-style corporate governance system in the UK, replacing FRC with ARGA, similar to the PCAOB
Examples of works to practice staccato technique in clarinet instrument
Klarnetin staccato tekniğini güçlendirme aşamaları eser çalışmalarıyla uygulanmıştır. Staccato
Sekiz özgün eser çalışmasının her
On the Mechanism of Building Core Competencies: a Study of Chinese Multinational Port Enterprises
This study aims to explore how Chinese multinational port enterprises (MNPEs) build
their core competencies. Core competencies are firms’special capabilities and sources
to gain sustainable competitive advantage (SCA) in marketplace, and the concept led
to extensive research and debates. However, few studies include inquiries about the
mechanisms of building core competencies in the context of Chinese MNPEs.
Accordingly, answers were sought to three research questions:
1. What are the core competencies of the Chinese MNPEs?
2. What are the mechanisms that the Chinese MNPEs use to build their core
competencies?
3. What are the paths that the Chinese MNPEs pursue to build their resources bases?
The study adopted a multiple-case study design, focusing on building mechanism of
core competencies with RBV. It selected purposively five Chinese leading MNPEs
and three industry associations as Case Companies.
The study revealed three main findings. First, it identified three generic core
competencies possessed by Case Companies, i.e., innovation in business models and
operations, utilisation of technologies, and acquisition of strategic resources. Second,
it developed the conceptual framework of the Mechanism of Building Core
Competencies (MBCC), which is a process of change of collective learning in
effective and efficient utilization of resources of a firm in response to critical events.
Third, it proposed three paths to build core competencies, i.e., enhancing collective
learning, selecting sustainable processes, and building resource base.
The study contributes to the knowledge of core competencies and RBV in three ways:
(1) presenting three generic core competencies of the Chinese MNPEs, (2) proposing
a new conceptual framework to explain how Chinese MNPEs build their core
competencies, (3) suggesting a solid anchor point (MBCC) to explain the links among
resources, core competencies, and SCA. The findings set benchmarks for Chinese
logistics industry and provide guidelines to build core competencies
