Logical operators for ontological modeling
We show that logic has more to offer to ontologists than standard first order
and modal operators. We first describe some operators of linear logic which we
believe are particularly suitable for ontological modeling, and suggest how to interpret
them within an ontological framework. After showing how they can coexist
with those of classical logic, we analyze three notions of artifact from the literature
to conclude that these linear operators allow for reducing the ontological commitment
needed for their formalization, and even simplify their logical formulation
Model the System from Adversary Viewpoint: Threats Identification and Modeling
Security attacks are hard to understand, often expressed with unfriendly and
limited details, making it difficult for security experts and for security
analysts to create intelligible security specifications. For instance, to
explain Why (attack objective), What (i.e., system assets, goals, etc.), and
How (attack method), adversary achieved his attack goals. We introduce in this
paper a security attack meta-model for our SysML-Sec framework, developed to
improve the threat identification and modeling through the explicit
representation of security concerns with knowledge representation techniques.
Our proposed meta-model enables the specification of these concerns through
ontological concepts which define the semantics of the security artifacts and
introduced using SysML-Sec diagrams. This meta-model also enables representing
the relationships that tie several such concepts together. This representation
is then used for reasoning about the knowledge introduced by system designers
as well as security experts through the graphical environment of the SysML-Sec
framework.Comment: In Proceedings AIDP 2014, arXiv:1410.322
The Generalised Liar Paradox: A Quantum Model and Interpretation
The formalism of abstracted quantum mechanics is applied in a model of the
generalized Liar Paradox. Here, the Liar Paradox, a consistently testable
configuration of logical truth properties, is considered a dynamic conceptual
entity in the cognitive sphere. Basically, the intrinsic contextuality of the
truth-value of the Liar Paradox is appropriately covered by the abstracted
quantum mechanical approach. The formal details of the model are explicited
here for the generalized case. We prove the possibility of constructing a
quantum model of the m-sentence generalizations of the Liar Paradox. This
includes (i) the truth-falsehood state of the m-Liar Paradox can be represented
by an embedded 2m-dimensional quantum vector in a (2m)^m dimensional complex
Hilbert space, with cognitive interactions corresponding to projections, (ii)
the construction of a continuous 'time' dynamics is possible: typical truth and
falsehood value oscillations are described by Schrodinger evolution, (iii)
Kirchoff and von Neumann axioms are satisfied by introduction of 'truth-value
by inference' projectors, (iv) time invariance of unmeasured state.Comment: 13 pages, to be published in Foundations of Scienc

OntoEng: A design method for ontology engineering in information systems
This paper addresses the design problem relating to ontology engineering in the discipline of information systems. Ontology engineering is a realm that covers issues related to ontology development and use throughout its life span. Nowadays, ontology as a new innovation promises to improve the design, semantic integration, and utilization of information systems. Ontologies are the backbone of knowledge-based systems. In addition, they establish sharable and reusable common understanding of specific domains amongst people, information systems, and software agents. Notwithstanding, the ontology engineering literature does not provide adequate guidance on how to build, evaluate, and maintain ontologies. On the basis of the
gathered experience during the development of V4 Telecoms Business Model Ontology as well as the conducted integration of the related literature from the design science paradigm, this paper introduces OntoEng and its application as a novel systematic design
method for ontology engineering

An Ontological formalization of the planning task
In this paper we propose a generic task ontology, which formalizes the space of planning problems. Although planning is one of the oldest researched areas in Artificial Intelligence and attempts have been made in the past at developing task ontologies for planning, these formalizations suffer from serious limitations: they do not exhibit the required level of formalization and precision and they usually fail to include some of the key concepts required for specifying planning problems. In con-trast with earlier proposals, our task ontology formalizes the nature of the planning task independently of any planning paradigm, specific domains, or applications and provides a fine-grained, precise and comprehensive characterization of the space of planning problems. Finally, in addition to producing a formal specification we have also operationalized the ontology into a set of executable definitions, which provide a concrete reusable resource for knowledge acquisition and system development in planning applications
IDEF5 Ontology Description Capture Method: Concept Paper
The results of research towards an ontology capture method referred to as IDEF5 are presented. Viewed simply as the study of what exists in a domain, ontology is an activity that can be understood to be at work across the full range of human inquiry prompted by the persistent effort to understand the world in which it has found itself - and which it has helped to shape. In the contest of information management, ontology is the task of extracting the structure of a given engineering, manufacturing, business, or logistical domain and storing it in an usable representational medium. A key to effective integration is a system ontology that can be accessed and modified across domains and which captures common features of the overall system relevant to the goals of the disparate domains. If the focus is on information integration, then the strongest motivation for ontology comes from the need to support data sharing and function interoperability. In the correct architecture, an enterprise ontology base would allow th e construction of an integrated environment in which legacy systems appear to be open architecture integrated resources. If the focus is on system/software development, then support for the rapid acquisition of reliable systems is perhaps the strongest motivation for ontology. Finally, ontological analysis was demonstrated to be an effective first step in the construction of robust knowledge based systems
Genuine Process Logic
The Genuine Process Logic described here (abbreviation: GPL) places the object-bound process itself at the center of formalism. It should be suitable for everyday use, i.e. it is not primarily intended for the formalization of computer programs, but instead, as a counter-conception to the classical state logics. The new and central operator of the GPL is an action symbol replacing the classical state symbols, e.g. of equivalence or identity. The complete renunciation of object-language state expressions also results in a completely new metalinguistic framework, both regarding the axioms and the expressive possibilities of this system. A mixture with state logical terms is readily possible
