    An isogeometric analysis framework for ventricular cardiac mechanics

    The finite element method (FEM) is commonly used in computational cardiac simulations. For this method, a mesh is constructed to represent the geometry and, subsequently, to approximate the solution. To accurately capture curved geometrical features many elements may be required, possibly leading to unnecessarily large computation costs. Without loss of accuracy, a reduction in computation cost can be achieved by integrating geometry representation and solution approximation into a single framework using the Isogeometric Analysis (IGA) paradigm. In this study, we propose an IGA framework suitable for echocardiogram data of cardiac mechanics, where we show the advantageous properties of smooth splines through the development of a multi-patch anatomical model. A nonlinear cardiac model is discretized following the IGA paradigm, meaning that the spline geometry parametrization is directly used for the discretization of the physical fields. The IGA model is benchmarked with a state-of-the-art biomechanics model based on traditional FEM. For this benchmark, the hemodynamic response predicted by the high-fidelity FEM model is accurately captured by an IGA model with only 320 elements and 4,700 degrees of freedom. The study is concluded by a brief anatomy-variation analysis, which illustrates the geometric flexibility of the framework. The IGA framework can be used as a first step toward an efficient workflow for an improved understanding of, and clinical decision support for, the treatment of cardiac diseases like heart rhythm disorders

    A Modular Approach to Large-scale Design Optimization of Aerospace Systems.

    Gradient-based optimization and the adjoint method form a synergistic combination that enables the efficient solution of large-scale optimization problems. Though the gradient-based approach struggles with non-smooth or multi-modal problems, the capability to efficiently optimize up to tens of thousands of design variables provides a valuable design tool for exploring complex tradeoffs and finding unintuitive designs. However, the widespread adoption of gradient-based optimization is limited by the implementation challenges for computing derivatives efficiently and accurately, particularly in multidisciplinary and shape design problems. This thesis addresses these difficulties in two ways. First, to deal with the heterogeneity and integration challenges of multidisciplinary problems, this thesis presents a computational modeling framework that solves multidisciplinary systems and computes their derivatives in a semi-automated fashion. This framework is built upon a new mathematical formulation developed in this thesis that expresses any computational model as a system of algebraic equations and unifies all methods for computing derivatives using a single equation. The framework is applied to two engineering problems: the optimization of a nanosatellite with 7 disciplines and over 25,000 design variables; and simultaneous allocation and mission optimization for commercial aircraft involving 330 design variables, 12 of which are integer variables handled using the branch-and-bound method. In both cases, the framework makes large-scale optimization possible by reducing the implementation effort and code complexity. The second half of this thesis presents a differentiable parametrization of aircraft geometries and structures for high-fidelity shape optimization. Existing geometry parametrizations are not differentiable, or they are limited in the types of shape changes they allow. This is addressed by a novel parametrization that smoothly interpolates aircraft components, providing differentiability. An unstructured quadrilateral mesh generation algorithm is also developed to automate the creation of detailed meshes for aircraft structures, and a mesh convergence study is performed to verify that the quality of the mesh is maintained as it is refined. As a demonstration, high-fidelity aerostructural analysis is performed for two unconventional configurations with detailed structures included, and aerodynamic shape optimization is applied to the truss-braced wing, which finds and eliminates a shock in the region bounded by the struts and the wing.PhDAerospace EngineeringUniversity of Michigan, Horace H.     Curve Skeleton and Moments of Area Supported Beam Parametrization in Multi-Objective Compliance Structural Optimization

    This work addresses the end-to-end virtual automation of structural optimization up to the derivation of a parametric geometry model that can be used for application areas such as additive manufacturing or the verification of the structural optimization result with the finite element method. A holistic design in structural optimization can be achieved with the weighted sum method, which can be automatically parameterized with curve skeletonization and cross-section regression to virtually verify the result and control the local size for additive manufacturing. is investigated in general. In this paper, a holistic design is understood as a design that considers various compliances as an objective function. This parameterization uses the automated determination of beam parameters by so-called curve skeletonization with subsequent cross-section shape parameter estimation based on moments of area, especially for multi-objective optimized shapes. An essential contribution is the linking of the parameterization with the results of the structural optimization, e.g., to include properties such as boundary conditions, load conditions, sensitivities or even density variables in the curve skeleton parameterization. The parameterization focuses on guiding the skeletonization based on the information provided by the optimization and the finite element model. In addition, the cross-section detection considers circular, elliptical, and tensor product spline cross-sections that can be applied to various shape descriptors such as convolutional surfaces, subdivision surfaces, or constructive solid geometry. The shape parameters of these cross-sections are estimated using stiffness distributions, moments of area of 2D images, and convolutional neural networks with a tailored loss function to moments of area. Each final geometry is designed by extruding the cross-section along the appropriate curve segment of the beam and joining it to other beams by using only unification operations. The focus of multi-objective structural optimization considering 1D, 2D and 3D elements is on cases that can be modeled using equations by the Poisson equation and linear elasticity. This enables the development of designs in application areas such as thermal conduction, electrostatics, magnetostatics, potential flow, linear elasticity and diffusion, which can be optimized in combination or individually. Due to the simplicity of the cases defined by the Poisson equation, no experts are required, so that many conceptual designs can be generated and reconstructed by ordinary users with little effort. Specifically for 1D elements, a element stiffness matrices for tensor product spline cross-sections are derived, which can be used to optimize a variety of lattice structures and automatically convert them into free-form surfaces. For 2D elements, non-local trigonometric interpolation functions are used, which should significantly increase interpretability of the density distribution. To further improve the optimization, a parameter-free mesh deformation is embedded so that the compliances can be further reduced by locally shifting the node positions. Finally, the proposed end-to-end optimization and parameterization is applied to verify a linear elasto-static optimization result for and to satisfy local size constraint for the manufacturing with selective laser melting of a heat transfer optimization result for a heat sink of a CPU. For the elasto-static case, the parameterization is adjusted until a certain criterion (displacement) is satisfied, while for the heat transfer case, the manufacturing constraints are satisfied by automatically changing the local size with the proposed parameterization.     Considerations for the Design Optimization of Floating Offshore Wind Turbine Blades

    Floating offshore wind turbines are an immature technology with relatively high costs and risk associated with deployment. Of the few floating wind turbine prototypes and demonstration projects deployed in real metocean conditions, all have used standard turbines design for onshore or offshore fixed bottom conditions. This neglects the unique unsteady aerodynamics brought on by floating support structure motion. While the floating platform has been designed and optimized for a given rotor, the global system is suboptimal due to the rotor operating in conditions outside of which it was design for. If the potential offered by floating wind turbines is to be realized, offering access to deep water near-shore, costs need to continue to be reduced. This dissertation is the first known design study that considers the optimization of wind turbine rotors specifically for floating conditions. Two design optimization methodologies are presented using different analysis fidelity levels. A relatively computationally efficient, state-state blade element moment optimization of floating wind turbine blades is presented that will be useful for future systems level optimization studies. A higher fidelity methodology is then presented, using time-domain aeroelastic simulations to fully capture the unsteady aerodynamics and dynamic couplings between the rotor and platform motion throughout the optimization process. The principal finding of these studies is that low induction rotors are a promising technology pathway for future FOWT systems, reducing the severity of cyclical loading due to platform motion

    Automated geometric modelling of textile structures

    An automated approach (TexGen) for modeling the geometry of textile structures is presented. This model provides a generic approach to the description of yarn geometry and yarn interlacement for all types of weaving. One feature of this model is that the shape and size of the cross sections may change locally; this is exploited in the functions for interference correction, which modify the textile according to geometric considerations to avoid penetration of yarns. Another feature of this model is that it acts as a pre-processor for finite element simulations by generating a mesh, definition of contact, materials orientation and boundary conditions, thus providing an automatic procedure. This paper describes the modelling techniques, algorithms and concepts implemented in TexGen and examines the functionality of their implementation for a range of two-dimensional/three-dimensional commercial fabrics. Comparisons between the images of real fabrics and modeled fabric structures confirm that the software is capable of modeling sophisticated fabric architectures, including twisted yarns with varied yarn cross sections. Accurate input measurements of fabric geometry are critical for successful results. The paper also discusses directions for further development of the approach to overcome current limitations

    Multi-scale active shape description in medical imaging

    Shape description in medical imaging has become an increasingly important research field in recent years. Fast and high-resolution image acquisition methods like Magnetic Resonance (MR) imaging produce very detailed cross-sectional images of the human body - shape description is then a post-processing operation which abstracts quantitative descriptions of anatomically relevant object shapes. This task is usually performed by clinicians and other experts by first segmenting the shapes of interest, and then making volumetric and other quantitative measurements. High demand on expert time and inter- and intra-observer variability impose a clinical need of automating this process. Furthermore, recent studies in clinical neurology on the correspondence between disease status and degree of shape deformations necessitate the use of more sophisticated, higher-level shape description techniques. In this work a new hierarchical tool for shape description has been developed, combining two recently developed and powerful techniques in image processing: differential invariants in scale-space, and active contour models. This tool enables quantitative and qualitative shape studies at multiple levels of image detail, exploring the extra image scale degree of freedom. Using scale-space continuity, the global object shape can be detected at a coarse level of image detail, and finer shape characteristics can be found at higher levels of detail or scales. New methods for active shape evolution and focusing have been developed for the extraction of shapes at a large set of scales using an active contour model whose energy function is regularized with respect to scale and geometric differential image invariants. The resulting set of shapes is formulated as a multiscale shape stack which is analysed and described for each scale level with a large set of shape descriptors to obtain and analyse shape changes across scales. This shape stack leads naturally to several questions in regard to variable sampling and appropriate levels of detail to investigate an image. The relationship between active contour sampling precision and scale-space is addressed. After a thorough review of modem shape description, multi-scale image processing and active contour model techniques, the novel framework for multi-scale active shape description is presented and tested on synthetic images and medical images. An interesting result is the recovery of the fractal dimension of a known fractal boundary using this framework. Medical applications addressed are grey-matter deformations occurring for patients with epilepsy, spinal cord atrophy for patients with Multiple Sclerosis, and cortical impairment for neonates. Extensions to non-linear scale-spaces, comparisons to binary curve and curvature evolution schemes as well as other hierarchical shape descriptors are discussed

    Modeling and sensitivity analysis of aircraft geometry for multidisciplinary optimization problems

Yet various challenges inhibit the widespread application of CAD models in aircraft conceptual design because current CAD platforms are not designed for automated shape optimization. In particular, CAD models built with conventional methods can perform poorly in automated design frameworks and their associated CAD systems do not provide shape sensitivities. This thesis aims to remedy these concerns by bridging the computational geometry tools in CAD with aerospace design needs. A methodology for constructing CAD models is presented using concepts of multifidelity/multidisciplinary geometry and design motion. A formalized definition of design intent emerges from this approach that enables CAD models with parameterization flexibility, shape malleability and regeneration robustness for automated design settings. Analytic shape sensitivities are also presented to apply CAD models in gradient-based shape optimization. The parameterization and sensitivities for sketches, extrude, revolve and sweep features are given for mechanical design; shape sensitivities for B-spline curves and surfaces are also presented for airfoil and wing design. Furthermore, analytic methods modeling the sensitivity of intersection edges and nodes in a boundary representation (BRep) are given. Comparisons between analytic and finite-difference gradients show excellent agreement, however an error associated with the finite-difference gradient is found to exist if linearizing the support points of B-spline curves/surfaces and regenerating with a geometry kernel. This important outcome highlights a limitation of the finite-difference method when used on CAD models containing these entities. Finally, various example design problems are shown which highlight the application of the methods presented in the thesis. These include mechanical part design, inverse/forward design of airfoils and wings, and a multidisciplinary design space study. Gradient-based optimization is used in each design problem to compare the impact of analytic and finite-difference geometry gradients on the final designs obtained.
