    A inten√ß√£o deste estudo √© problematizar o conceito de intui√ß√£o na obra Matem√°tica elementar de um ponto de vista superior (1908), de Felix Klein, com o objetivo de compreender o significado do conceito de intui√ß√£o para o autor e de ressaltar o seu papel no ensino.     Using A Catalogue of the Rarities to Be Seen at Don Saltero‚Äôs Coffeehouse in Chelsea. To Which Is Added, a Compleat List of the Donors Thereof - published in London, England between 1729 and 1795, this case study contextualises the catalogue‚Äôs title pages through a change over time examination of the typography and then listed of rarities through strategies from material culture to understand better the intersecting identities floating around the public sphere. What was reflected were characteristics of religion, nationhood, and gender. Don Saltero‚Äôs rarities catalogues were a topic of discussion for patrons of Don Saltero‚Äôs coffeehouse in London. Catalogues analysed in this research existed in the coffee house environment, private homes, and wherever these catalogues ended up. The catalogues added legitimacy to the collections they accompanied and did so by placing objects within various Enlightenment discussions and tying the listed objects to contemporary cultural knowledge. Additionally, the object‚Äôs descriptions allowed spectators and readers to interact with the ‚Äėscience‚Äô of the emerging field of natural history. They presented catalogues in a way that emulated emerging scientific works within the academic sphere of the natural world. The sources used here gained further fame and legitimacy through the connection to well-known naturalist Sir Hans Sloane, a physician to the royal family, president of the Royal Society, and founder of the British Museum. Owning rarity collections was often an elite enterprise, but a collection‚Äôs stories were deliberately pitched to a much broader audience offering access to the collections and the ideas they represented. Thus, these catalogues add significance to their collections by expanding public discourse on objects known as rarities

    Global health in transition: The coming of neoliberalism

    Global health as a transnational, intergovernmental, value-based initiative led by the World Health Organization (WHO), working toward improving health and achieving equity in health for all people worldwide, has for years yielded to a growing reliance on corporate-led solutions. Private organizations, non-governmental organizations (NGO), religious and other philanthropic and charitable organizations, increasingly serve a dominant role in setting the global health agenda. Short-term success in combating epidemics and in the provision of funding for project-based initiatives appeals to supporters of marketization of health services. For 30 years, a neoliberal paradigm has dominated the international political economy and hence the governance of global health. A utilitarian logic or the ethics of consequentialism have attained prominence under such banners as effective altruism or venture philanthropy.  This contrasts with the merits and relevance of deontological ethics in which rules and moral duty are central. This paper seeks to explain how neo-liberalism became a governing precept and paradigm for global health governance. A priority is to unmask terms and precepts serving as ethos or moral character for corporate actions that benefit vested stakeholders.   &nbsp

    Henry David Thoreau e as Linguagens da Natureza

    This dissertation aims to present a hermeneutic reading of some of the religious symbols brought to light by the literature of the poet and naturalist Henry David Thoreau (1817‚Äď1862). The background of our argument is the romantic motto of the symbolic correspondence between Nature and spirit, inherited by the author from his contact with the movement that became known as ‚ÄúTranscendentalism,‚ÄĚ a religious, literary, philosophical, and political circle gestated in the Nineteenth-century United States. From this panorama, we draw a poetic appreciation of the thinker‚Äôs interpretation of the linguistic correlation between Nature and spirit that points to the unity between the immanence of natural kingdoms (the earth) and the transcendence of the spiritual spheres (the sky). Emphasizing the sacred character of the symbols hinted by Thoreau‚Äôs texts, those emblems we call ‚Äúmythopoetic hieroglyphs‚ÄĚ and ‚Äúmusical hieroglyphs.‚ÄĚ Beyond the tonalities of romanticism, the work proposed here, evoking distinct religious paths, seeks to highlight the multiple reflective possibilities that the North American thinker offers to comparative studies of religions, given the mark of dialogicity between different wisdom traditions in his composition. Highlighting seeing and hearing (i.e., reading and listening to the ‚Äúbook‚ÄĚ and the ‚Äúorchestra‚ÄĚ of Nature), our exposition aims to unravel the intimate relationship between spirituality and bodily sensibility in the intellectual‚Äôs approach to those we call ‚ÄúLanguages of Nature.‚ÄĚA presente disserta√ß√£o tem por objetivo apresentar uma leitura hermen√™utica de alguns dos s√≠mbolos religiosos trazidos √† baila pela literatura do poeta e naturalista Henry David Thoreau (1817‚Äď1862). O pano de fundo de nossa argumenta√ß√£o √© o mote rom√Ęntico da correspond√™ncia simb√≥lica entre Natureza e esp√≠rito, herdado pelo autor a partir de seu contato com o movimento que se tornou conhecido como ‚ÄúTranscendentalismo‚ÄĚ, c√≠rculo religioso, liter√°rio, filos√≥fico e pol√≠tico gestado nos Estados Unidos do s√©culo XIX. A partir desse panorama, tra√ßamos uma aprecia√ß√£o po√©tica da interpreta√ß√£o de Thoreau acerca da correla√ß√£o lingu√≠stica entre Natureza e esp√≠rito que aponta para a unidade entre a iman√™ncia dos reinos naturais (a terra) e a transcend√™ncia das esferas espirituais (o c√©u).     Melioristic genealogies and Indigenous philosophies

    According to Mary Midgley, philosophy is like plumbing: like the invisible entrails of an elaborate plumbing system, philosophical ideas respond to basic needs that are fundamental to human life. Melioristic projects in philosophy attempt to fix or reroute this plumbing. An obstacle to melioristic projects is that the sheer familiarity of the underlying philosophical ideas renders the plumbing invisible. Philosophical genealogies aim to overcome this by looking at the origins of our current concepts. We discuss philosophical concepts developed in Indigenous cultures as a source of inspiration for melioristic genealogy. Examining the philosophical concepts of these communities is useful because it gives us a better idea of the range of ethical, political, and metaphysical approaches that exist in the world. Members of western societies do not get a clear view of this range, in part because living in large groups presents its own constraints and challenges, which limit philosophical options. We argue that features of Indigenous philosophies, such as egalitarianism and care for one's natural environment, are not inevitable byproducts of Native material conditions and lifestyles, but that they are deliberate forms of conceptual engineering. We propose that comparative philosophy is an integral part of the genealogical project

    This monograph is the first substantial contribution to the study of the Swiss novelist Catherine Colomb’s dialogue with Marcel Proust and Virginia Woolf as well as to time and memory studies. The framework and approach devised to examine Colomb’s oeuvre contribute to unravelling some of its complexities, not only in its curving style, ephemeral, and sequence-defying narrative, but also in its literary engagement with the science and philosophy that shaped modernity and proposed new ways of thinking time, knowledge, and the human experience. This thesis ultimately allows us to gain insight into the originality of Colombian time experience, memory, and point-of-view representations, transcending the alleged influence of her iconic predecessors

    O pragmatismo filosófico no conhecimento administrativo e na formação do administrador

    Este ensaio tem por objetivo fazer uma an√°lise epistemol√≥gica da Administra√ß√£o enquanto conjunto organizado de conhecimentos e da forma√ß√£o de administradores no contexto dessa Ci√™ncia. Assim, o trabalho est√° dividido em tr√™s partes: na primeira s√£o apresentados argumentos acerca da teoria do conhecimento, na segunda, discute-se a trajet√≥ria da forma√ß√£o da Administra√ß√£o como √°rea de conhecimento e na terceira aborda-se o ensino da Administra√ß√£o em cursos superiores de gradua√ß√£o considerando a proposi√ß√£o de posicionamento epistemol√≥gico do conhecimento administrativo e abordado uma ferramenta de ensino-aprendizagem: o m√©todo do caso, como um mecanismo do instrumento pragmatista. Deste modo, concluiu-se que o pragmatismo √© a parte mais evidente e marcante da identidade desse campo de conhecimento. Embora haja cr√≠ticas quanto √† atua√ß√£o de administradores e organiza√ß√Ķes no que concerne a pr√°ticas dissociadas do bem comum, esses se alinham com a proposta inicial da Administra√ß√£o: resolver problemas organizacionais pr√°ticos; apesar da tentativa de legitima√ß√£o de novas abordagens em substitui√ß√£o √† unidimensionalidade do mercado, como de Guerreiro Ramos, ainda os princ√≠pios pragmatistas se configuram como paradigma predominante na Ci√™ncia da Administra√ß√£o
