    A realisation of ethical concerns with smartphone personal health monitoring apps

    The pervasiveness of smartphones has facilitated a new way in which owners of devices can monitor their health using applications (apps) that are installed on their smartphones. Smartphone personal health monitoring (SPHM) collects and stores health related data of the user either locally or in a third party storing mechanism. They are also capable of giving feedback to the user of the app in response to conditions are provided to the app therefore empowering the user to actively make decisions to adjust their lifestyle. Regardless of the benefits that this new innovative technology offers to its users, there are some ethical concerns to the user of SPHM apps. These ethical concerns are in some way connected to the features of SPHM apps. From a literature survey, this paper attempts to recognize ethical issues with personal health monitoring apps on smartphones, viewed in light of general ethics of ubiquitous computing. The paper argues that there are ethical concerns with the use of SPHM apps regardless of the benefits that the technology offers to users due to SPHM apps’ ubiquity leaving them open to known and emerging ethical concerns. The paper then propose a need further empirical research to validate the claim

    The Mundane Computer: Non-Technical Design Challenges Facing Ubiquitous Computing and Ambient Intelligence

    Interdisciplinary collaboration, to include those who are not natural scientists, engineers and computer scientists, is inherent in the idea of ubiquitous computing, as formulated by Mark Weiser in the late 1980s and early 1990s. However, ubiquitous computing has remained largely a computer science and engineering concept, and its non-technical side remains relatively underdeveloped. The aim of the article is, first, to clarify the kind of interdisciplinary collaboration envisaged by Weiser. Second, the difficulties of understanding the everyday and weaving ubiquitous technologies into the fabric of everyday life until they are indistinguishable from it, as conceived by Weiser, are explored. The contributions of Anne Galloway, Paul Dourish and Philip Agre to creating an understanding of everyday life relevant to the development of ubiquitous computing are discussed, focusing on the notions of performative practice, embodied interaction and contextualisation. Third, it is argued that with the shift to the notion of ambient intelligence, the larger scale socio-economic and socio-political dimensions of context become more explicit, in contrast to the focus on the smaller scale anthropological study of social (mainly workplace) practices inherent in the concept of ubiquitous computing. This can be seen in the adoption of the concept of ambient intelligence within the European Union and in the focus on rebalancing (personal) privacy protection and (state) security in the wake of 11 September 2001. Fourth, the importance of adopting a futures-oriented approach to discussing the issues arising from the notions of ubiquitous computing and ambient intelligence is stressed, while the difficulty of trying to achieve societal foresight is acknowledged

    Trust-based model for privacy control in context aware systems

    In context-aware systems, there is a high demand on providing privacy solutions to users when they are interacting and exchanging personal information. Privacy in this context encompasses reasoning about trust and risk involved in interactions between users. Trust, therefore, controls the amount of information that can be revealed, and risk analysis allows us to evaluate the expected benefit that would motivate users to participate in these interactions. In this paper, we propose a trust-based model for privacy control in context-aware systems based on incorporating trust and risk. Through this approach, it is clear how to reason about trust and risk in designing and implementing context-aware systems that provide mechanisms to protect users' privacy. Our approach also includes experiential learning mechanisms from past observations in reaching better decisions in future interactions. The outlined model in this paper serves as an attempt to solve the concerns of privacy control in context-aware systems. To validate this model, we are currently applying it on a context-aware system that tracks users' location. We hope to report on the performance evaluation and the experience of implementation in the near future

    Using P3P in a web services-based context-aware application platform

    This paper describes a proposal for a privacy control architecture to be applied in the WASP project. The WASP project aims to develop a context-aware service platform on top of 3G networks, using web services technology. The proposed privacy control architecture is based on the P3P privacy policy description standard defined by W3C. The paper identifies extensions to P3P and its associated preference expression language APPEL that are needed to operate in a context-aware environment

    Data degradation to enhance privacy for the Ambient Intelligence

    Increasing research in ubiquitous computing techniques towards the development of an Ambient Intelligence raises issues regarding privacy. To gain the required data needed to enable application in this Ambient Intelligence to offer smart services to users, sensors will monitor users' behavior to fill personal context histories. Those context histories will be stored on database/information systems which we consider as honest: they can be trusted now, but might be subject to attacks in the future. Making this assumption implies that protecting context histories by means of access control might be not enough. To reduce the impact of possible attacks, we propose to use limited retention techniques. In our approach, we present applications a degraded set of data with a retention delay attached to it which matches both application requirements and users privacy wishes. Data degradation can be twofold: the accuracy of context data can be lowered such that the less privacy sensitive parts are retained, and context data can be transformed such that only particular abilities for application remain available. Retention periods can be specified to trigger irreversible removal of the context data from the system
