    A Framework for Enhanced QoS Support in IEEE 802.11e Networks

    IEEE 802.11 based WLANs have became popular, but they can only provide best effort services and so they are poorly suitable for multimedia applications. Recently IEEE 802.11e standard has been proposed to support quality of service. The new standard introduces a so-called Hybrid Coordination Function containing two medium access mechanisms: contention-based channel access and controlled channel access. In this paper we propose a novel framework to better support QoS guarantees for multimedia applications. It comprises QoS Manager, Admission Control, Enhanced Scheduler, Predictor and Feedback System. The scheduler adopted supports real-time applications, variable packet sizes and variable bit rate traffic streams. We show that this framework is suitable to be used by applications requesting Application Level Contracts which will be translated in Resource Level Contracts to the scheduler subsystem. The QoS manager component is able to dynamically manage available resources under different load conditions

    Performance Evaluation of Wireless Medium Access Control Protocols for Internet of Things

    The Internet of Things makes the residents in Smart Cities enjoy a more efficient and high-quality lifestyle by wirelessly interconnecting the physical and visual world. However, the performance of wireless networks is challenged by the ever-growing wireless traffic data, the complexity of the network structures, and various requirements of Quality of Service (QoS), especially on the Internet of Vehicle and wireless sensor networks. Consequently, the IEEE 802.11p and 802.11ah standards were designed to support effective inter-vehicle communications and large-scale sensor networks, respectively. Although their Medium Access Control protocols have attracted much research interest, they have yet to fully consider the influences of channel errors and buffer sizes on the performance evaluation of these Medium Access Control (MAC) protocols. Therefore, this thesis first proposed a new analytical model based on a Markov chain and Queuing analysis to evaluate the performance of IEEE 802.11p under imperfect channels with both saturated and unsaturated traffic. All influential factors of the Enhanced Distributed Channel Access (EDCA) mechanism in IEEE 802.11p are considered, including the backoff counter freezing, Arbitration Inter-Frame Spacing (AIFS) defers, the internal collision, and finite MAC buffer sizes. Furthermore, this proposed model considers more common and actual conditions with the influence of channel errors and finite MAC buffer sizes. The effectiveness and accuracy of the developed model have been validated through extensive ns-3 simulation experiments. Second, this thesis proposes a developed analytical model based on Advanced Queuing Analysis and the Gilbert-Elliot model to analyse the performance of IEEE 802.11p with burst error transmissions. This proposed analytical model simultaneously describes transmission queues for all four Access Categories (AC) queues with the influence of burst errors. Similarly, this presented model can analyse QoS performance, including throughputs and end-to-end delays with the unsaturated or saturated load traffics. Furthermore, this model operates under more actual bursty error channels in vehicular environments. In addition, a series of simulation experiments with a natural urban environment is designed to validate the efficiency and accuracy of the presented model. The simulation results reflect the reliability and effectiveness of the presented model in terms of throughput and end-to-end delays under various channel conditions. Third, this thesis designed and implemented a simulation experiment to analyse the performance of IEEE 802.11ah. These simulation experiments are based on ns-3 and an extension. These simulation experiments' results indicate the Restricted Access Window (RAW) mechanism's influence on the throughputs, end-to-end delays, and packet loss rates. Furthermore, the influences of channel errors and bursty errors are considered in the simulations. The results also show the strong impact of channel errors on the performance of IEEE 802.11ah due to urban environments. Finally, the potential future work based on the proposed models and simulations is analysed in this thesis. The proposed models of IEEE 802.11p can be an excellent fundamental to optimise the QoS due to the precise evaluation of the influence of factors on the performance of IEEE 802.11p. Moreover, it is possible to migrate the analytical models of IEEE 802.11p to evaluate the performance of IEEE 802.11ah

    Spectrum Sharing Methods in Coexisting Wireless Networks

    Radio spectrum, the fundamental basis for wireless communication, is a finite resource. The development of the expanding range of radio based devices and services in recent years makes the spectrum scarce and hence more costly under the paradigm of extensive regulation for licensing. However, with mature technologies and with their continuous improvements it becomes apparent that tight licensing might no longer be required for all wireless services. This is from where the concept of utilizing the unlicensed bands for wireless communication originates. As a promising step to reduce the substantial cost for radio spectrum, different wireless technology based networks are being deployed to operate in the same spectrum bands, particularly in the unlicensed bands, resulting in coexistence. However, uncoordinated coexistence often leads to cases where collocated wireless systems experience heavy mutual interference. Hence, the development of spectrum sharing rules to mitigate the interference among wireless systems is a significant challenge considering the uncoordinated, heterogeneous systems. The requirement of spectrum sharing rules is tremendously increasing on the one hand to fulfill the current and future demand for wireless communication by the users, and on the other hand, to utilize the spectrum efficiently. In this thesis, contributions are provided towards dynamic and cognitive spectrum sharing with focus on the medium access control (MAC) layer, for uncoordinated scenarios of homogeneous and heterogeneous wireless networks, in a micro scale level, highlighting the QoS support for the applications. This thesis proposes a generic and novel spectrum sharing method based on a hypothesis: The regular channel occupation by one system can support other systems to predict the spectrum opportunities reliably. These opportunities then can be utilized efficiently, resulting in a fair spectrum sharing as well as an improving aggregated performance compared to the case without having special treatment. The developed method, denoted as Regular Channel Access (RCA), is modeled for systems specified by the wireless local resp. metropolitan area network standards IEEE 802.11 resp. 802.16. In the modeling, both systems are explored according to their respective centrally controlled channel access mechanisms and the adapted models are evaluated through simulation and results analysis. The conceptual model of spectrum sharing based on the distributed channel access mechanism of the IEEE 802.11 system is provided as well. To make the RCA method adaptive, the following enabling techniques are developed and integrated in the design: a RSS-based (Received Signal Strength based) detection method for measuring the channel occupation, a pattern recognition based algorithm for system identification, statistical knowledge based estimation for traffic demand estimation and an inference engine for reconfiguration of resource allocation as a response to traffic dynamics. The advantage of the RCA method is demonstrated, in which each competing collocated system is configured to have a resource allocation based on the estimated traffic demand of the systems. The simulation and the analysis of the results show a significant improvement in aggregated throughput, mean delay and packet loss ratio, compared to the case where legacy wireless systems coexists. The results from adaptive RCA show its resilience characteristics in case of dynamic traffic. The maximum achievable throughput between collocated IEEE 802.11 systems applying RCA is provided by means of mathematical calculation. The results of this thesis provide the basis for the development of resource allocation methods for future wireless networks particularly emphasized to operate in current unlicensed bands and in future models of the Open Spectrum Alliance

    PERFORMANCE EVALUATION OF CROSS-LAYER DESIGN WITH DISTRIBUTED AND SEQUENTIAL MAPPING SCHEME FOR VIDEO APPLICATION OVER IEEE 802.11E

    The rapid development of wireless communication imposes several challenges to support QoS for real-time multimedia applications such as video stream applications. Researchers tackled these challenges from different points of view including the semantics of the video to achieve better QoS requirements. The main goal of this research is to design a UDP protocol to realize a distributed sequential mapping scheme (DSM) with a cross-layer design and evaluate its accuracy under different network conditions. In DSM, the perceived quality of a multi-layer video is addressed by mapping each video layer into channel resources represented as queues or access categories (ACs) existing in IEEE 802.11e MAC layer. This research work further investigates the efficiency of this scheme with actual implementation and thorough simulation experiments. The experiments reported the efficiency of this scheme with the presence of different composite traffic models covering most known traffic scenarios using Expected Reconstructed Video Layers (ERVL) and packet loss rate as accuracy measures. This research work also investigates the accuracy of calculating the ERVL compared to its value using actual readings of layers drop rate. The effect of changing the ACs queue size on the ERVL is studied. The use of this scheme shows zero-drop in the base layer in almost all scenarios where no ongoing traffic is presented except that the testing video sessions between nodes. In these experiments, the ERVL continuously reported high values for the number of expected reconstructed video layers. While these values dramatically vary when introducing ongoing different composite traffic models together with the testing video sessions between nodes. Finally, a 40% increase in the ACs queue size shows significant improvement on ERVL while an increase of the queue size beyond this value has very little significance on ERVL
