Today's desktop computers already have multi-core processors, and chips with more than a hundred cores are commercially available. As a communication medium for such a large number of cores, network-on-chip (NoC) has emerged out, and now is being used by many researchers and companies. Adopting NoC for a many-core system incurs many problems, and this thesis tries to solve some of them. The second chapter of this thesis is on mapping and scheduling of tasks on NoC-based CMP architectures. Although mapping on NoC has a number of papers published, our work reveals that selecting communication types between shared memory and message passing can help improve the performance and energy efficiency. Additionally, our framework supports scheduling applications containing backward dependencies with the help of modified modulo scheduling. Evolving the SoCs through 3D stacking makes us face a number of new problems, and the thermal problem coming from increased power density is one of them. In the third chapter of this thesis, we try to mitigate the hotspot problem using DVFS techniques. Assuming that all the routers as well as cores have capabilities to control voltage and frequency individually, we find voltage-frequency pairs for all cores and routers which yields the best performance within the given thermal constraint. The fourth and the fifth chapters of this thesis are from a different aspect. In 3D stacking, inter-layer interconnections are implemented using through-silicon vias (TSV). TSVs usually take much more area than normal wires. Furthermore, they also consume silicon area as well as metal area. For this reason, designers would want to limit the number of TSVs used in their network. To limit the TSV count, there are two options: the first is to reduce the width of each vertical links, and the other is to use fewer vertical links, which results in a partially connected network. We present two routing methodologies for each case. For the network with reduced bandwidth vertical links, we propose using deflection routing to mitigate the long latency of vertical links. By balancing the vertical traffics properly, the algorithm provides improved latency. Also, a large amount of area and energy reduction can be obtained by the removal of router buffers. For partially connected networks, we introduce a set of routing rules for selecting the vertical links. At the expense of sacrificing some amount of routing freedom, the proposed algorithm removes the virtual channel requirement for avoiding deadlock.     Off-chip Communications Architectures For High Throughput Network Processors

    In this work, we present off-chip communications architectures for line cards to increase the throughput of the currently used memory system. In recent years there is a significant increase in memory bandwidth demand on line cards as a result of higher line rates, an increase in deep packet inspection operations and an unstoppable expansion in lookup tables. As line-rate data and NPU processing power increase, memory access time becomes the main system bottleneck during data store/retrieve operations. The growing demand for memory bandwidth contrasts the notion of indirect interconnect methodologies. Moreover, solutions to the memory bandwidth bottleneck are limited by physical constraints such as area and NPU I/O pins. Therefore, indirect interconnects are replaced with direct, packet-based networks such as mesh, torus or k-ary n-cubes. We investigate multiple k-ary n-cube based interconnects and propose two variations of 2-ary 3-cube interconnect called the 3D-bus and 3D-mesh. All of the k-ary n-cube interconnects include multiple, highly efficient techniques to route, switch, and control packet flows in order to minimize congestion spots and packet loss. We explore the tradeoffs between implementation constraints and performance. We also developed an event-driven, interconnect simulation framework to evaluate the performance of packet-based off-chip k-ary n-cube interconnect architectures for line cards. The simulator uses the state-of-the-art software design techniques to provide the user with a flexible yet robust tool, that can emulate multiple interconnect architectures under non-uniform traffic patterns. Moreover, the simulator offers the user with full control over network parameters, performance enhancing features and simulation time frames that make the platform as identical as possible to the real line card physical and functional properties. By using our network simulator, we reveal the best processor-memory configuration, out of multiple configurations, that achieves optimal performance. Moreover, we explore how network enhancement techniques such as virtual channels and sub-channeling improve network latency and throughput. Our performance results show that k-ary n-cube topologies, and especially our modified version of 2-ary 3-cube interconnect - the 3D-mesh, significantly outperform existing line card interconnects and are able to sustain higher traffic loads. The flow control mechanism proved to extensively reduce hot-spots, load-balance areas of high traffic rate and achieve low transmission failure rate.     The work described in the thesis investigates the features of control plane functionality for routing wavelength paths to serve a set of sub-wavelength demands. The work takes account of routing problems only found in physical network layers, notably analogue transmission impairments. Much work exists on routing connections for dynamic Wavelength-Routed Optical Networks (WRON) and to demonstrate their advantages over static photonic networks. However, the question of how agile the WRON should be has not been addressed quantitatively. A categorization of switching speeds is extended, and compared with the reasons for requiring network agility. The increase of effective network capacity achieved with increased agility is quantified through new simulations. It is demonstrated that this benefit only occurs within a certain window of network fill; achievement of significant gain from a more-agile network may be prevented by the operatorโ€™s chosen tolerable blocking probability. The Wavelength Path Sharing (WPS) scheme uses semi-static wavelengths to form unidirectional photonic shared buses, reducing the need for photonic agility. Making WPS more practical, novel improved routing algorithms are proposed and evaluated for both execution time and performance, offering significant benefit in speed at modest cost in efficiency. Photonic viability is the question of whether a path that the control plane can configure will work with an acceptable bit error rate (BER) despite the physical transmission impairments encountered. It is shown that, although there is no single approach that is simple, quick to execute and generally applicable at this time, under stated conditions approximations may be made to achieve a general solution that will be fast enough to enable some applications of agility. The presented algorithms, analysis of optimal network agility and viability assessment approaches can be applied in the analysis and design of future photonic control planes and network architectures

    The work in this thesis is concerned with the development of a novel and practical collision avoidance system for autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs). Synergistically, advanced stochastic motion planning methods, dynamics quantisation approaches, multivariable tracking controller designs, sonar data processing and workspace representation, are combined to enhance significantly the survivability of modern AUVs. The recent proliferation of autonomous AUV deployments for various missions such as seafloor surveying, scientific data gathering and mine hunting has demanded a substantial increase in vehicle autonomy. One matching requirement of such missions is to allow all the AUV to navigate safely in a dynamic and unstructured environment. Therefore, it is vital that a robust and effective collision avoidance system should be forthcoming in order to preserve the structural integrity of the vehicle whilst simultaneously increasing its autonomy. This thesis not only provides a holistic framework but also an arsenal of computational techniques in the design of a collision avoidance system for AUVs. The design of an obstacle avoidance system is first addressed. The core paradigm is the application of the Rapidly-exploring Random Tree (RRT) algorithm and the newly developed version for use as a motion planning tool. Later, this technique is merged with the Manoeuvre Automaton (MA) representation to address the inherent disadvantages of the RRT. A novel multi-node version which can also address time varying final state is suggested. Clearly, the reference trajectory generated by the aforementioned embedded planner must be tracked. Hence, the feasibility of employing the linear quadratic regulator (LQG) and the nonlinear kinematic based state-dependent Ricatti equation (SDRE) controller as trajectory trackers are explored. The obstacle detection module, which comprises of sonar processing and workspace representation submodules, is developed and tested on actual sonar data acquired in a sea-trial via a prototype forward looking sonar (AT500). The sonar processing techniques applied are fundamentally derived from the image processing perspective. Likewise, a novel occupancy grid using nonlinear function is proposed for the workspace representation of the AUV. Results are presented that demonstrate the ability of an AUV to navigate a complex environment. To the author's knowledge, it is the first time the above newly developed methodologies have been applied to an A UV collision avoidance system, and, therefore, it is considered that the work constitutes a contribution of knowledge in this area of work.J&S MARINE LT

    iCity. Transformative Research for the Livable, Intelligent, and Sustainable City

    This open access book presents the exciting research results of the BMBF funded project iCity carried out at University of Applied Science Stuttgart to help cities to become more liveable, intelligent and sustainable, to become a LIScity. The research has been pursued with industry partners and NGOs from 2017 to 2020. A LIScity is increasingly digitally networked, uses resources efficiently, and implements intelligent mobility concepts. It guarantees the supply of its grid-bound infrastructure with a high proportion of renewable energy. Intelligent cities are increasingly human-centered, integrative, and flexible, thus placing the well-being of the citizens at the center of developments to increase the quality of life. The articles in this book cover research aimed to meet these criteria.
