Incremental construction of LSTM recurrent neural network
Long Short--Term Memory (LSTM) is a recurrent neural network that
uses structures called memory blocks to allow the net remember
significant events distant in the past input sequence in order to
solve long time lag tasks, where other RNN approaches fail.
Throughout this work we have performed experiments using LSTM
networks extended with growing abilities, which we call GLSTM.
Four methods of training growing LSTM has been compared. These
methods include cascade and fully connected hidden layers as well
as two different levels of freezing previous weights in the
cascade case. GLSTM has been applied to a forecasting problem in a biomedical domain, where the input/output behavior of five
controllers of the Central Nervous System control has to be
modelled. We have compared growing LSTM results against other
neural networks approaches, and our work applying conventional
LSTM to the task at hand.Postprint (published version

Geometric Wavelet Scattering Networks on Compact Riemannian Manifolds
The Euclidean scattering transform was introduced nearly a decade ago to
improve the mathematical understanding of convolutional neural networks.
Inspired by recent interest in geometric deep learning, which aims to
generalize convolutional neural networks to manifold and graph-structured
domains, we define a geometric scattering transform on manifolds. Similar to
the Euclidean scattering transform, the geometric scattering transform is based
on a cascade of wavelet filters and pointwise nonlinearities. It is invariant
to local isometries and stable to certain types of diffeomorphisms. Empirical
results demonstrate its utility on several geometric learning tasks. Our
results generalize the deformation stability and local translation invariance
of Euclidean scattering, and demonstrate the importance of linking the used
filter structures to the underlying geometry of the data.Comment: 35 pages; 3 figures; 2 tables; v3: Revisions based on reviewer

Speaker-independent emotion recognition exploiting a psychologically-inspired binary cascade classification schema
In this paper, a psychologically-inspired binary cascade classification schema is proposed for speech emotion recognition. Performance is enhanced because commonly confused pairs of emotions are distinguishable from one another. Extracted features are related to statistics of pitch, formants, and energy contours, as well as spectrum, cepstrum, perceptual and temporal features, autocorrelation, MPEG-7 descriptors, Fujisakis model parameters, voice quality, jitter, and shimmer. Selected features are fed as input to K nearest neighborhood classifier and to support vector machines. Two kernels are tested for the latter: Linear and Gaussian radial basis function. The recently proposed speaker-independent experimental protocol is tested on the Berlin emotional speech database for each gender separately. The best emotion recognition accuracy, achieved by support vector machines with linear kernel, equals 87.7%, outperforming state-of-the-art approaches. Statistical analysis is first carried out with respect to the classifiers error rates and then to evaluate the information expressed by the classifiers confusion matrices. © Springer Science+Business Media, LLC 2011
Towards real-world complexity: an introduction to multiplex networks
Many real-world complex systems are best modeled by multiplex networks of
interacting network layers. The multiplex network study is one of the newest
and hottest themes in the statistical physics of complex networks. Pioneering
studies have proven that the multiplexity has broad impact on the system's
structure and function. In this Colloquium paper, we present an organized
review of the growing body of current literature on multiplex networks by
categorizing existing studies broadly according to the type of layer coupling
in the problem. Major recent advances in the field are surveyed and some
outstanding open challenges and future perspectives will be proposed.Comment: 20 pages, 10 figure
