Meanwhile, visible light communication (VLC) using light devices such as light emitting diodes (LEDs) has been deemed to be a promising candidate in the heterogeneous wireless networks that may collaborate with radio frequencies (RF) wireless networks. In particular, light-fidelity has a great potential for deployment in future indoor environments because of its high throughput and security advantages. This paper provides a comprehensive study of a novel positioning technology based on visible white LED lights, which has attracted much attention from both academia and industry. The essential characteristics and principles of this system are deeply discussed, and relevant positioning algorithms and designs are classified and elaborated. This paper undertakes a thorough investigation into current LED-based indoor positioning systems and compares their performance through many aspects, such as test environment, accuracy, and cost. It presents indoor hybrid positioning systems among VLC and other systems (e.g., inertial sensors and RF systems). We also review and classify outdoor VLC positioning applications for the first time. Finally, this paper surveys major advances as well as open issues, challenges, and future research directions in VLC positioning systems.Peer reviewe

    Indoor pedestrian dead reckoning calibration by visual tracking and map information

    Currently, Pedestrian Dead Reckoning (PDR) systems are becoming more attractive in market of indoor positioning. This is mainly due to the development of cheap and light Micro Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) on smartphones and less requirement of additional infrastructures in indoor areas. However, it still faces the problem of drift accumulation and needs the support from external positioning systems. Vision-aided inertial navigation, as one possible solution to that problem, has become very popular in indoor localization with satisfied performance than individual PDR system. In the literature however, previous studies use fixed platform and the visual tracking uses feature-extraction-based methods. This paper instead contributes a distributed implementation of positioning system and uses deep learning for visual tracking. Meanwhile, as both inertial navigation and optical system can only provide relative positioning information, this paper contributes a method to integrate digital map with real geographical coordinates to supply absolute location. This hybrid system has been tested on two common operation systems of smartphones as iOS and Android, based on corresponded data collection apps respectively, in order to test the robustness of method. It also uses two different ways for calibration, by time synchronization of positions and heading calibration based on time steps. According to the results, localization information collected from both operation systems has been significantly improved after integrating with visual tracking data

    SLAM for Visually Impaired People: A Survey

    In recent decades, several assistive technologies for visually impaired and blind (VIB) people have been developed to improve their ability to navigate independently and safely. At the same time, simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) techniques have become sufficiently robust and efficient to be adopted in the development of assistive technologies. In this paper, we first report the results of an anonymous survey conducted with VIB people to understand their experience and needs; we focus on digital assistive technologies that help them with indoor and outdoor navigation. Then, we present a literature review of assistive technologies based on SLAM. We discuss proposed approaches and indicate their pros and cons.     Advanced Map Matching Technologies and Techniques for Pedestrian/Wheelchair Navigation

    Due to the constantly increasing technical advantages of mobile devices (such as smartphones), pedestrian/wheelchair navigation recently has achieved a high level of interest as one of smartphonesā€™ potential mobile applications. While vehicle navigation systems have already reached a certain level of maturity, pedestrian/wheelchair navigation services are still in their infancy. By comparing vehicle navigation systems, a set of map matching requirements and challenges unique in pedestrian/wheelchair navigation is identified. To provide navigation assistance to pedestrians and wheelchair users, there is a need for the design and development of new map matching techniques. The main goal of this research is to investigate and develop advanced map matching technologies and techniques particular for pedestrian/wheelchair navigation services. As the first step in map matching, an adaptive candidate segment selection algorithm is developed to efficiently find candidate segments. Furthermore, to narrow down the search for the correct segment, advanced mathematical models are applied. GPS-based chain-code map matching, Hidden Markov Model (HMM) map matching, and fuzzy-logic map matching algorithms are developed to estimate real-time location of users in pedestrian/wheelchair navigation systems/services. Nevertheless, GPS signal is not always available in areas with high-rise buildings and even when there is a signal, the accuracy may not be high enough for localization of pedestrians and wheelchair users on sidewalks. To overcome these shortcomings of GPS, multi-sensor integrated map matching algorithms are investigated and developed in this research. These algorithms include a movement pattern recognition algorithm, using accelerometer and compass data, and a vision-based positioning algorithm to fill in signal gaps in GPS positioning. Experiments are conducted to evaluate the developed algorithms using real field test data (GPS coordinates and other sensors data). The experimental results show that the developed algorithms and the integrated sensors, i.e., a monocular visual odometry, a GPS, an accelerometer, and a compass, can provide high-quality and uninterrupted localization services in pedestrian/wheelchair navigation systems/services. The map matching techniques developed in this work can be applied to various pedestrian/wheelchair navigation applications, such as tracking senior citizens and children, or tourist service systems, and can be further utilized in building walking robots and automatic wheelchair navigation systems

    More and more, mobile applications require precise localization solutions in a variety of environments. Although GPS is widely used as localization solution, it may present some accuracy problems in special conditions such as unfavorable weather or spaces with multiple obstructions such as public parks. For these scenarios, alternative solutions to GPS are of extreme relevance and are widely studied recently. This dissertation studies the case of EduPARK application, which is an augmented reality application that is implemented in the Infante D. Pedro park in Aveiro. Due to the poor accuracy of GPS in this park, the implementation of positioning and marker-less augmented reality functionalities presents difficulties. Existing relevant systems are analyzed, and an architecture based on pedestrian dead reckoning is proposed. The corresponding implementation is presented, which consists of a positioning solution using the sensors available in the smartphones, a step detection algorithm, a distance traveled estimator, an orientation estimator and a position estimator. For the validation of this solution, functionalities were implemented in the EduPARK application for testing purposes and usability tests performed. The results obtained show that the proposed solution can be an alternative to provide accurate positioning within the Infante D. Pedro park, thus enabling the implementation of functionalities of geocaching and marker-less augmented reality.Cada vez mais, as aplicaƧƵes mĆ³veis requerem soluƧƵes de localizaĆ§Ć£o precisa nos mais variados ambientes. Apesar de o GPS ser amplamente usado como soluĆ§Ć£o para localizaĆ§Ć£o, pode apresentar alguns problemas de precisĆ£o em condiƧƵes especiais, como mau tempo, ou espaƧos com vĆ”rias obstruƧƵes, como parques pĆŗblicos. Para estes casos, soluƧƵes alternativas ao GPS sĆ£o de extrema relevĆ¢ncia e veem sendo desenvolvidas. A presente dissertaĆ§Ć£o estuda o caso do projeto EduPARK, que Ć© uma aplicaĆ§Ć£o mĆ³vel de realidade aumentada para o parque Infante D. Pedro em Aveiro. Devido Ć  fraca precisĆ£o do GPS nesse parque, a implementaĆ§Ć£o de funcionalidades baseadas no posionamento e de realidade aumentada sem marcadores apresenta dificuldades. SĆ£o analisados sistemas relevantes existentes e Ć© proposta uma arquitetura baseada em localizaĆ§Ć£o de pedestres. Em seguida Ć© apresentada a correspondente implementaĆ§Ć£o, que consiste numa soluĆ§Ć£o de posicionamento usando os sensores disponiveis nos smartphones, um algoritmo de deteĆ§Ć£o de passos, um estimador de distĆ¢ncia percorrida, um estimador de orientaĆ§Ć£o e um estimador de posicionamento. Para a validaĆ§Ć£o desta soluĆ§Ć£o, foram implementadas funcionalidades na aplicaĆ§Ć£o EduPARK para fins de teste, e realizados testes com utilizadores e testes de usabilidade.     Wayfinding and Navigation for People with Disabilities Using Social Navigation Networks

    To achieve safe and independent mobility, people usually depend on published information, prior experience, the knowledge of others, and/or technology to navigate unfamiliar outdoor and indoor environments. Today, due to advances in various technologies, wayfinding and navigation systems and services are commonplace and are accessible on desktop, laptop, and mobile devices. However, despite their popularity and widespread use, current wayfinding and navigation solutions often fail to address the needs of people with disabilities (PWDs). We argue that these shortcomings are primarily due to the ubiquity of the compute-centric approach adopted in these systems and services, where they do not benefit from the experience-centric approach. We propose that following a hybrid approach of combining experience-centric and compute-centric methods will overcome the shortcomings of current wayfinding and navigation solutions for PWDs

    An IoT-aware AAL System to Capture Behavioral Changes of Elderly People

    The ageing of population is a phenomenon that is affecting the majority of developed countries around the world and will soon affect developing economies too. In recent years, both industry and academia are focused on the development of several solutions aimed to guarantee a healthy and safe lifestyle to the elderly. In this context, the behavioral analysis of elderly people can help to prevent the occurrence of Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) and frailty problems. The innovative technologies enabling the Internet of Things (IoT) can be used in order to capture personal data for automatically recognizing changes in elderly people behavior in an unobtrusive, low-cost and low-power modality. This work aims to describe the ongoing activities within the City4Age project, funded by the Horizon 2020 Programme of the European Commission, mainly focused on the use of IoT technologies to develop an innovative AAL system able to capture personal data of elderly people in their home and city environments. The proposed architecture has been validated through a proof-of-concept focused mainly on localization issues, collection of ambient parameters, and user-environment interaction aspects
