    Local search inequalities

3noWe describe a general method for deriving new inequalities for integer programming formulations of combinatorial optimization problems. The inequalities, motivated by local search algorithms, are valid for all optimal solutions but not necessarily for all feasible solutions. These local search inequalities can help in either pruning the search tree at some nodes or in improving the bound of the LP relaxations.openopenLancia, Giuseppe; Rinaldi, Franca; Serafini, PaoloLancia, Giuseppe; Rinaldi, Franca; Serafini, Paol

    On local-hidden-variable no-go theorems

The strongest attack against quantum mechanics came in 1935 in the form of a paper by Einstein, Podolsky and Rosen. It was argued that the theory of quantum mechanics could not be called a complete theory of Nature, for every element of reality is not represented in the formalism as such. The authors then put forth a proposition: we must search for a theory where, upon knowing everything about the system, including possible hidden variables, one could make precise predictions concerning elements of reality. This project was ultimatly doomed in 1964 with the work of Bell Bell, who showed that the most general local hidden variable theory could not reproduce correlations that arise in quantum mechanics. There exist mainly three forms of no-go theorems for local hidden variable theories. Although almost every physicist knows the consequences of these no-go theorems, not every physicist is aware of the distinctions between the three or even their exact definitions. Thus we will discuss here the three principal forms of no-go theorems for local hidden variable theories of Nature. We will define Bell inequalities, Bell inequalities without inequalities and pseudo-telepathy. A discussion of the similarities and differences will follow.Comment: 7 pages, no figure, replaced "Bell inequalities" with "Bell theorems" and updated the reference

Nonmonotone hybrid tabu search for Inequalities and equalities: an experimental study

    Get PDF
The main goal of this paper is to analyze the behavior of nonmonotone hybrid tabu search approaches when solving systems of nonlinear inequalities and equalities through the global optimization of an appropriate merit function. The algorithm combines global and local searches and uses a nonmonotone reduction of the merit function to choose the local search. Relaxing the condition aims to call the local search more often and reduces the overall computational effort. Two variants of a perturbed pattern search method are implemented as local search. An experimental study involving a variety of problems available in the literature is presented.Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT

Combining global tabu search with local search for solving systems of equalities and inequalities

    Get PDF
This papers aims at providing a combined strategy for solving systems of equalities and inequalities. The combined strategy uses two types of steps: a global search step and a local search step. The global step relies on a tabu search heuristic and the local step uses a deterministic search known as Hooke and Jeeves. The choice of step, at each iteration, is based on the level of reduction of the l2-norm of the error function observed in the equivalent system of equations, compared with the previous iterationFundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT

Linking families with pre-school children from healthcare services to community resources: a systematic review protocol

Background: Poor health and health inequalities persist despite increasing investment in health improvement programmes across high-income countries. Evidence suggests that to reduce health inequalities, a range of activities targeted at different levels within society and throughout the life course should be employed. There is a particular focus on addressing inequalities in early years as this may influence the experience of health in adulthood. To address the wider determinants of health at a community level, a key intervention which can be considered is supporting patients to access wider community resources. This can include processes such as signposting, referral and facilitation. There is a lack of evidence synthesis in relation to the most effective methods for linking individuals from health services to other services within communities, especially when considering interventions aimed at families with young children. Method/design: The aim of this study is to understand the way health services can best help parents, carers and families with pre-school children to engage with local services, groups and agencies to address their wider health and social needs. The review may inform future guidance to support families to address wider determinants of health. The study is a systematic review, and papers will be identified from the following electronic databases: Web of Science, Embase, MEDLINE and CINAHL. A grey literature search will be conducted using an internet search engine and specific grey literature databases (TRiP, EThOS and Open Grey). Reference lists/bibliographies of selected papers will be searched. Quality will be assessed using the Effective Public Health Practice Project Quality Assessment Tool for quantitative studies and the CASP tool for qualitative studies. Data will be synthesised in a narrative form and weighted by study quality. Discussion: It is important to understand how health services can facilitate access to wider services for their patients to address the wider determinants of health. This may impact on the experience of health inequalities. This review focuses on how this can be achieved for families with pre-school children, and the evidence obtained will be useful for informing future guidance on this topic
