Towards Optimal Distributed Node Scheduling in a Multihop Wireless Network through Local Voting
In a multihop wireless network, it is crucial but challenging to schedule
transmissions in an efficient and fair manner. In this paper, a novel
distributed node scheduling algorithm, called Local Voting, is proposed. This
algorithm tries to semi-equalize the load (defined as the ratio of the queue
length over the number of allocated slots) through slot reallocation based on
local information exchange. The algorithm stems from the finding that the
shortest delivery time or delay is obtained when the load is semi-equalized
throughout the network. In addition, we prove that, with Local Voting, the
network system converges asymptotically towards the optimal scheduling.
Moreover, through extensive simulations, the performance of Local Voting is
further investigated in comparison with several representative scheduling
algorithms from the literature. Simulation results show that the proposed
algorithm achieves better performance than the other distributed algorithms in
terms of average delay, maximum delay, and fairness. Despite being distributed,
the performance of Local Voting is also found to be very close to a centralized
algorithm that is deemed to have the optimal performance
QoS routing in ad-hoc networks using GA and multi-objective optimization
Much work has been done on routing in Ad-hoc networks, but the proposed routing solutions only deal with the best effort data traffic. Connections with Quality of Service (QoS) requirements, such as voice channels with delay and bandwidth constraints, are not supported. The QoS routing has been receiving increasingly intensive attention, but searching for the shortest path with many metrics is an NP-complete problem. For this reason, approximated solutions and heuristic algorithms should be developed for multi-path constraints QoS routing. Also, the routing methods should be adaptive, flexible, and intelligent. In this paper, we use Genetic Algorithms (GAs) and multi-objective optimization for QoS routing in Ad-hoc Networks. In order to reduce the search space of GA, we implemented a search space reduction algorithm, which reduces the search space for GAMAN (GA-based routing algorithm for Mobile Ad-hoc Networks) to find a new route. We evaluate the performance of GAMAN by computer simulations and show that GAMAN has better behaviour than GLBR (Genetic Load Balancing Routing).Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

Unified clustering and communication protocol for wireless sensor networks
In this paper we present an energy-efficient cross layer protocol for providing application specific reservations in wireless senor networks called the “Unified Clustering and Communication Protocol ” (UCCP). Our modular cross layered framework satisfies three wireless sensor network requirements, namely, the QoS requirement of heterogeneous applications, energy aware clustering and data forwarding by relay sensor nodes. Our unified design approach is motivated by providing an integrated and viable solution for self organization and end-to-end communication is wireless sensor networks. Dynamic QoS based reservation guarantees are provided using a reservation-based TDMA approach. Our novel energy-efficient clustering approach employs a multi-objective optimization technique based on OR (operations research) practices. We adopt a simple hierarchy in which relay nodes forward data messages from cluster head to the sink, thus eliminating the overheads needed to maintain a routing protocol. Simulation results demonstrate that UCCP provides an energy-efficient and scalable solution to meet the application specific QoS demands in resource constrained sensor nodes. Effective Handover Technique in Cluster Based MANET Using Cooperative Communication
Mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) are becoming increasingly common now a days and typical network loads considered for MANETs are increasing as applications evolve. This increases the importance of bandwidth efficiency and requirements on energy consumption delay and jitter. Coordinated channel access protocols have been shown to be well suited for MANETs under uniform load distributions. However, these protocols are not well suited for non-uniform load distributions as uncoordinated channel access protocols due to the lack of on-demand dynamic channel allocation mechanisms that exist in infrastructure based coordinated protocols. We have considered a lightweight dynamic channel allocation algorithm and a cooperative load balancing strategy that are helpful for the cluster based MANETs and an effective handover technique to improve the increased packet transmission mechanism. This helps in reduce jitter, packet delay and packet transfer speed, we use a novel handover algorithm to address this problem We present protocols that utilize these mechanisms to improve performance in terms of throughput, energy consumption and inter-packet delay variation (IPDV)
Performance Comparison of Contention- and Schedule-based MAC Protocols in Urban Parking Sensor Networks
Network traffic model is a critical problem for urban applications, mainly
because of its diversity and node density. As wireless sensor network is highly
concerned with the development of smart cities, careful consideration to
traffic model helps choose appropriate protocols and adapt network parameters
to reach best performances on energy-latency tradeoffs. In this paper, we
compare the performance of two off-the-shelf medium access control protocols on
two different kinds of traffic models, and then evaluate their application-end
information delay and energy consumption while varying traffic parameters and
network density. From the simulation results, we highlight some limits induced
by network density and occurrence frequency of event-driven applications. When
it comes to realtime urban services, a protocol selection shall be taken into
account - even dynamically - with a special attention to energy-delay tradeoff.
To this end, we provide several insights on parking sensor networks.Comment: ACM International Workshop on Wireless and Mobile Technologies for
