    Task-based Adaptation of Graphical Content in Smart Visual Interfaces

    To be effective visual representations must be adapted to their respective context of use, especially in so-called Smart Visual Interfaces striving to present specifically those information required for the task at hand. This thesis proposes a generic approach that facilitate the automatic generation of task-specific visual representations from suitable task descriptions. It is discussed how the approach is applied to four principal content types raster images, 2D vector and 3D graphics as well as data visualizations, and how existing display techniques can be integrated into the approach.Effektive visuelle Repräsentationen müssen an den jeweiligen Nutzungskontext angepasst sein, insbesondere in sog.     BIM AUTOMATION: ADVANCED MODELING GENERATIVE PROCESS for COMPLEX STRUCTURES

    The new paradigm of the complexity of modern and historic structures, which are characterised by complex forms, morphological and typological variables, is one of the greatest challenges for building information modelling (BIM). Generation of complex parametric models needs new scientific knowledge concerning new digital technologies. These elements are helpful to store a vast quantity of information during the life cycle of buildings (LCB). The latest developments of parametric applications do not provide advanced tools, resulting in time-consuming work for the generation of models. This paper presents a method capable of processing and creating complex parametric Building Information Models (BIM) with Non-Uniform to NURBS) with multiple levels of details (Mixed and ReverseLoD) based on accurate 3D photogrammetric and laser scanning surveys. Complex 3D elements are converted into parametric BIM software and finite element applications (BIM to FEA) using specific exchange formats and new modelling tools. The proposed approach has been applied to different case studies: the BIM of modern structure for the courtyard of West Block on Parliament Hill in Ottawa (Ontario) and the BIM of Masegra Castel in Sondrio (Italy), encouraging the dissemination and interaction of scientific results without losing information during the generative process

    Unlimited object instancing in real-time

    In this paper, we propose a novel approach to efficient rendering of an unlimited number of 3D objects in real-time. We present a rendering pipeline that is based on a new computer graphics programming paradigm implementing a holistic approach to the virtual scene definition. Using Signed Distance Functions (SDF) for a virtual scene representation, we managed to control the content and complexity of the virtual scene with the use of mathematical equations. In order to solve the limited hardware problem, especially the limited capacity of the GPU memory, we propose a scene element repository which extends the idea of the data based amplification. The content of the repository strongly depends on a 3D object visualization method. One of the most important requirements of the developed pipeline is the possibility to render 3D objects created by artists. In order to achieve that, the object visualization method uses Sparse Voxel Octree (SVO) ray casting. The developed rendering pipeline is fully compatible with the available SVO algorithms. We show how to avoid occlusion errors which can occur in the SDF and SVO integration single-pass rendering pipeline. Finally, in order to control the content and complexity of the virtual scenes in an unlimited way, we propose a collection of global operators applicable to the virtual scene distance function. Developed Unlimited Object Instancing rendering pipeline can be easily integrated with traditional visualization methods, e.g. the triangle rasterization. The only hardware requirement for our approach is the support for compute shaders or any GPGPU API

    Management of spatial data for visualization on mobile devices

    Vector-based mapping is emerging as a preferred format in Location-based Services(LBS), because it can deliver an up-to-date and interactive map visualization. The Progressive Transmission(PT) technique has been developed to enable the ecient transmission of vector data over the internet by delivering various incremental levels of detail(LoD). However, it is still challenging to apply this technique in a mobile context due to many inherent limitations of mobile devices, such as small screen size, slow processors and limited memory. Taking account of these limitations, PT has been extended by developing a framework of ecient data management for the visualization of spatial data on mobile devices. A data generalization framework is proposed and implemented in a software application. This application can signicantly reduce the volume of data for transmission and enable quick access to a simplied version of data while preserving appropriate visualization quality. Using volunteered geographic information as a case-study, the framework shows exibility in delivering up-to-date spatial information from dynamic data sources. Three models of PT are designed and implemented to transmit the additional LoD renements: a full scale PT as an inverse of generalisation, a viewdependent PT, and a heuristic optimised view-dependent PT. These models are evaluated with user trials and application examples. The heuristic optimised view-dependent PT has shown a signicant enhancement over the traditional PT in terms of bandwidth-saving and smoothness of transitions. A parallel data management strategy associated with three corresponding algorithms has been developed to handle LoD spatial data on mobile clients. This strategy enables the map rendering to be performed in parallel with a process which retrieves the data for the next map location the user will require. A viewdependent approach has been integrated to monitor the volume of each LoD for visible area. The demonstration of a exible rendering style shows its potential use in visualizing dynamic geoprocessed data. Future work may extend this to integrate topological constraints and semantic constraints for enhancing the vector map visualization

    The FEV Frontend: A Terrain and Water Simulation Client

    The FEV (Flood Emergency Visualizer) Frontend is a Java and OpenGL-based 3D vi- sualizer of flood simulation results in real-time. Simulations can be recomputed based on user-defined terrain edits made directly on the rendering surface. The frontend is the client software of the FEV system that includes a backend for solving water flow equations using CUDA. To render large datasets, level-of-detail and other optimizations are needed to render terrain and water surfaces with interactive frame rates

    ClioPatria: A SWI-Prolog Infrastructure for the Semantic Web

    ClioPatria is a comprehensive semantic web development framework based on SWI-Prolog. SWI-Prolog provides an efficient C-based main-memory RDF store that is designed to cooperate naturally and efficiently with Prolog, realizing a flexible RDF-based environment for rule based programming. ClioPatria extends this core with a SPARQL and LOD server, an extensible web frontend to manage the server, browse the data, query the data using SPARQL and Prolog and a Git-based plugin manager. The ability to query RDF using Prolog provides query composition and smooth integration with application logic. ClioPatria is primarily positioned as a prototyping platform for exploring novel ways of reasoning with RDF data.
