The Aftermath for Psychology Students: Questionnaire Administered to SJSU Alumni

    Get PDF
Psychology is an interesting field that attempts to understand human behavior, and many pursue it to help others (Haselhuhn & Clopton, 2008). This field of study leads to many opportunities which is an advantage of the field but can also be a disadvantage. If psychology students want to pursue a graduate degree, they need to consider which subfield they will specialize in. There are a variety of sub-disciplines in the psychology field: clinical, counseling, industrial organization, experimental/research, neuroscience, cognition, forensic, etc. (Feist, 2006). The disadvantage is that if students do not know what to specialize in, it might feel daunting to explore all the options. There is also a disadvantage for students who do not want to pursue a graduate degree; Pinkus and Korn (1973) argued that there is no clear path for students with a bachelor’s in psychology. Due to this mystery in psychology students’ career opportunities, the purpose of this research is to investigate San Jose State University psychology alumni’s current occupations, salaries, and how graduate school affected their incomes. This analysis and interpretation of archival data will be used to convey different career opportunities in psychology to students at San Jose State University (SJSU). This analysis has the potential to help other students have a broader understanding of the paths they may choose in this field

Contributions to autonomous robust navigation of mobile robots in industrial applications

E-Learning and Intelligent Planning: Improving Content Personalization

Combining learning objects is a challenging topic because of its direct application to curriculum generation, tailored to the students' profiles and preferences. Intelligent planning allows us to adapt learning routes (i.e. sequences of learning objects), thus highly improving the personalization of contents, the pedagogical requirements and specific necessities of each student. This paper presents a general and effective approach to extract metadata information from the e-learning contents, a form of reusable learning objects, to generate a planning domain in a simple, automated way. Such a domain is used by an intelligent planner that provides an integrated recommendation system, which adapts, stores and reuses the best learning routes according to the students' profiles and course objectives. If any inconsistency happens during the route execution, e.g. the student fails to pass an assessment test which prevents him/her from continuing the natural course of the route, the systeGarrido, A.; Morales, L. La mancha humana en la obra de Philip Roth

Tesis inédita de la Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Facultad de Filología, leída el 18-10-2021This doctoral thesis explores the image of the human stain in Philip Roth's fiction. It examines four novels written by the Jewish American author: Sabbath’s Theater (1995), American Pastoral (1997), The Human Stain (2000) and The Dying Animal (2001). In addition, it looks at the shaping of the stain in one of his earliest works: “Epstein” (Goodbye, Columbus and other Stories, 1959).The human stain appears in Roth’s work as a mark on the skin, a spilling of bodily fluids, the undesired presence of something that, apparently, should not be there. As a literary resource it consists of a combination of images: menstrual blood, semen, feces, mud. Within the plot, the stain -in any of its shapes-becomes an obstacle for the characters, who have to face its reality. With the objective of understanding the meaning of this literary device, this thesis carries out a comparative analysis of the sources cited above, a study structured around three main points: the human stain as impurity; secondly, the stain as power to transgress; and finally, as the human expression of suffering, illness and death. With the support of Roth scholarship about the subjects of the body, transgression, desire and death, this thesis attempts to offer a new reading of Roth’s work, arguing that this resource is a lens through which it is possible to appreciate and understand some of the most controversial aspects of his work. Aware of the scandal that he provoked with his representation of Jews, women and the physical frailty of human beings at their most vulnerable, Roth used the resource of the stain precisely to write about the very feature that he thought most characterizes us as a species...La presente tesis doctoral explora la imagen de la mancha humana en la obra de Philip Roth.

Activities Adjusting Attitudes: The Impact of Lifestyle on Age Stereotype and Beliefs

    Get PDF
Negative stereotypes about old age in general, such as the belief the older people are frail and forgetful or the expectation that declines are inevitable with increased age (Hummert, 2011; Kite & Stockdale, 2005) become self-relevant once individuals identify as old (Levy, 2009). In turn, negative attitudes about one’s own aging is linked to impaired performance, such as poorer memory (Levy, 2000) and slower walking (Levy et al., 2012), and detrimental health outcomes, such as worse physical health (Siebert et al., 2016), slower recovery from illness (Nelson, 2016), and reduced longevity (Levy et al., 2002). Research suggests that increased knowledge and awareness about a social group may reduce reliance on the stereotypes and encourage more realistic beliefs (Hess, 2006). Further, engaged lifestyles, such as participation in social activities are cognitively stimulating or physically active may promote healthier aging (Hertzog et al., 2008). We propose that benefits from these lifestyle activities might transfer to enhanced age attitudes. The purpose of the proposed research is to test whether engaged lifestyles, positive intergenerational contact, and more knowledge about aging relate to more positive age attitudes in general and about one’s own age. Members of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI), aged 50 years and older, will be compensated with $15 gift cards for completing surveys about their general lifestyle activities, engagement in OLLI activities, quality and frequency of contact with younger adults, and age attitudes. We expect that self-relevant age attitudes will be more positive for individuals who participate in more activities and spend quality time with younger adults. More positive attitudes about old age in general is expected for participants who learned about the “typical” aging process in OLLI classes. Results may inform development of psychosocial interventions to improve aging attitudes and reveal which specific activities are best for healthy aging

On the Necessity of Time and Resource Issues to Support Collaboration in E-learning Standards

In this paper we motivate the necessity of time+resource metadata in current e-learning standards to support collaborative activities. Learning Objects (LOs) are currently defined in a very independent way from each other, which makes it difficult to use them in a real scenario where students interact and have their own constraints. We present some challenging features that, at least, should be discussed when elaborating new e-learning standards.Garrido Tejero, A.; Morales, L.; Serina, I. (2011).
