During the early republican period of Turkey, new industrial complexes were emerged through modernity project and modern architecture. One of this industrial complexes were the sugar factories with their production and residential buildings, which were particularly significant, both as quintessential modern buildings and as built manifestations of modernity project in Turkey. This study is focused on the architectural findings of the primary sugar factories built in early republican period in Turkey. As a case study, the primary/main four sugar factories, which were established at the first ten years of Republic; Alpullu, Uşak, Eskişehir and Turhal factories were selected. These factories have been the subject of limited studies separately so far. Therefore the present study investigates the role of primary sugar factories in the industrialization period, as a new architectural planning reflecting industrial city idea of modernism and their effects on the community of the cities. The research methods include field study procedures to identify and analyze them, with their site complexes, building materials and architectural elements that characterize the continuity of settlement identity. As a result, primary sugar factories in Turkey have characteristically simple form, small, variable in squares and well-designed buildings and their architectural complexes actually serve as symbols of social and cultural identities of their time. © 2017, Istanbul Teknik Universitesi, Faculty of Architecture. Songs of Wartime: An Anthology of Music Composed by Women during the Second World War

During the Second World War, female European composers wrote a prolific amount of music which often goes unrecognized in favor of their male counterparts. The composers that I focus on are Elsa Barraine, Ilse Weber, Josima Feldschuh, Germaine Tailleferre, and Grażyna Bacewicz. The goal of this study is to collect an anthology of five pieces, one piece by each composer, in order to highlight and celebrate their contribution to the musical canon, as well as to understand how the conflict in Europe affected them. For my research, I first found five female composers who were in some way affected by World War II in Europe. I then chose one piece by each of them that they wrote in response to the war that represented their musical output well. I then wrote entries for the anthology, the first part a biography of the composer, the second part describing the piece being studied. Finally, I included the score, as well as the text and translations for the vocal works. For one piece, I also transcribed a piece into a notation software from a handwritten score. I found that these pieces served as an artistic expression in the midst of a horrific conflict. Although these composers were of varying ages and their lives had different outcomes, the music they wrote provided an astonishing contribution to the classical music canon. Their legacies live on through their music, making up just a part of the mosaic that is the European wartime narrative

Spaces of Activism – Physical and Social Thrombogenesis

Some recent urban transformation projects as a consequence of social activism show that society has the power to specify the problems generate solutions for them and heal its environment for a sustainable future. They also propose different type of public experience in terms of participation, activity and production. These transformation projects come forward as a subject of research for raised consciousness, triggering activism and transformative public sphere they foster. Furthermore, social activism, resulting in transformation projects, changes the city structure and contributes to physical conditions. Many left-over plots and buildings are turned into lively portions of public scene. These potentials are mainly brought forward by the activist initiatives. Spatial needs, responsibility and sensitivity for the city propose spatial transformation and lead to urban developments. Last but not least, this type of public space contributes to productivity, identity and improvement of neglected part of the society. It does not only allow participation and bring different groups together, but also encourages self-exploration and personal transformation. Overall, concept of social activism proposes possible organizational formations and spatial ideas for transformative public spheres

This is the online version of the book; the images of Albert Bloch’s paintings are included only in the printed edition. The printed edition is available from Jayhawk Ink at http://www.kubookstore.com/p-126860-albert-bloch-and-the-blue-rider-munich-years.aspxAlbert Bloch, together with Wassily Kandinsky and Franz Marc, participated in one of the most significant art shows of the twentieth century, the Blue Rider exhibition of Munich in 1911–1912. Subsequently this American artist from St. Louis also exhibited with Paul Klee. During the decade from 1910 to 1920 Bloch contributed to at least forty European exhibitions. The present publication provides an overview of this period of Bloch’s career. Thanks to an original photographic record of 140 paintings from that period, we are able to recover the evolution of his art in the context of a most innovative period of modern art

Preserving Access to Previous System States in the Lively Kernel

In programming systems such as the Lively Kernel, programmers construct applications from objects. Dedicated tools make it possible to manipulate the state and behavior of objects at runtime. Programmers are encouraged to make changes directly and receive immediate feedback on their actions. However, when programmers make mistakes in such programming systems, they need to undo the effects of their actions. Programmers either have to edit objects manually or reload parts of their applications. Moreover, changes can spread across many objects. As a result, recovering previous states is often error-prone and time-consuming. This report presents an approach to object versioning for systems like the Lively Kernel. Access to previous versions of objects is preserved using version-aware references. These references can be resolved to multiple versions of objects and, thereby, allow reestablishing preserved states of the system. We present a design based on proxies and an implementation in JavaScript

Building Web Based Programming Environments for Functional Programming

    Get PDF
Functional programming offers an accessible and powerful algebraic model for computing. JavaScript is the language of the ubiquitous Web, but it does not support functional programs well due to its single-threaded, asynchronous nature and lack of rich control flow operators. The purpose of this work is to extend JavaScript to a language environment that satisfies the needs of functional programs on the Web. This extended language environment uses sophisticated control operators to provide an event-driven functional programming model that cooperates with the browser\u27s DOM, along with synchronous access to JavaScript\u27s asynchronous APIs. The results of this work are used toward two projects: (1) a programming environment called WeScheme that runs in the web browser and supports a functional programming curriculum, and (2) a tool-chain called Moby that compiles event-driven functional programs to smartphones, with access to phone-specific features
