    The book attempts to introduce a gentle introduction to the field of Facial Micro Expressions Recognition (FMER) using Color and Depth images, with the aid of MATLAB programming environment. FMER is a subset of image processing and it is a multidisciplinary topic to analysis. So, it requires familiarity with other topics of Artifactual Intelligence (AI) such as machine learning, digital image processing, psychology and more. So, it is a great opportunity to write a book which covers all of these topics for beginner to professional readers in the field of AI and even without having background of AI. Our goal is to provide a standalone introduction in the field of MFER analysis in the form of theorical descriptions for readers with no background in image processing with reproducible Matlab practical examples. Also, we describe any basic definitions for FMER analysis and MATLAB library which is used in the text, that helps final reader to apply the experiments in the real-world applications. We believe that this book is suitable for students, researchers, and professionals alike, who need to develop practical skills, along with a basic understanding of the field.     Fast and Accurate Retinal Identification System: Using Retinal Blood Vasculature Landmarks

    IEEE The expansion of automation techniques and increased risk of identity theft have led emphasis on the tremendous need of automated identification system. Due to the high recognition accuracy and robustness to changes in human physiology, retinal biometric identification system has drawn much attention in this research field. In this paper, we aim to propose an automatic fast and accurate retinal identification system for the multi-sample data set. The proposed approach uses a hybrid segmentation technique to segment out both thick/thin vessels for effectively balancing the difference of wavelet response between thick/thin blood vessels. As a result, recognition accuracy is improved. A PCA (Principle Component Analysis) based feature processing approach is proposed for efficiently reducing the dimensionality of a large number of vessels features. It significantly reduces computation time and accelerates the matching process in the retinal identification system. The proposed technique is validated on DRIVE, STARE, VARIA, RIDB, HRF, Messidor, DIARETDB0, and a large multi-sample per subject database created by authors using the images provided by Dr. Chen (Shanghai Jiao Tong University Affiliated Sixth People Hospital). Experimental results demonstrated that the proposed approach outperforms other existing techniques. Segmentation achieves an overall accuracy of 99.65% with the recognition rate of 99.40% on all these databases

    This chapter elaborates on using generative adversarial networks (GAN) for virtual try-on applications. It presents the first comprehensive survey on this topic. Virtual try-on represents a practical application of GANs and pixel translation, which improves on the techniques of virtual try-on prior to these new discoveries. This survey details the importance of virtual try-on systems and the history of virtual try-on; shows how GANs, pixel translation, and perceptual losses have influenced the field; and summarizes the latest research in creating virtual try-on systems. Additionally, the authors present the future directions of research to improve virtual try-on systems by making them usable, faster, more effective. By walking through the steps of virtual try-on from start to finish, the chapter aims to expose readers to key concepts shared by many GAN applications and to give readers a solid foundation to pursue further topics in GANs

    Image pre-processing to improve data matrix barcode read rates

    The main goal of this study is to research image processing methods in attempts to develop a robust approach to image pre-preprocessing of Data Matrix barcode images that will improve barcode read rates in an open source fashion. This is demonstrated by element state classification to re-create the ideal binary matrix corresponding to the intended barcode layout through pattern recognition theory. The research consisted of implementing and evaluating the effectiveness of many image processing algorithms types, as well as evaluating key features that clearly delineate different element states. The algorithms developed highlight the use of morphological erosion and region growing for object segmentation and edge analysis and Fisher\u27s Linear Discriminant as a means for element classification. The results demonstrate successful barcode binarization for ideal barcodes with improved read rates in most cases. The techniques developed here provide ground work for a test bed environment to continue improvements by analyzing non-ideal barcodes for additional robustness

    A Robust Face Recognition Algorithm for Real-World Applications

The local representation provides robustness against appearance variations in local regions caused by partial face occlusion or facial expression, whereas utilizing the frequency information provides robustness against changes in illumination.     Counter-Measures to Photo Attacks in Face Recognition: a public database and a baseline

    A common technique to by-pass 2-D face recognition systems is to use photographs of spoofed identities. Unfortunately, research in counter-measures to this type of attack have not kept-up - even if such threats have been known for nearly a decade, there seems to exist no consensus on best practices, techniques or protocols for developing and testing spoofing-detectors for face recognition. We attribute the reason for this delay, partly, to the unavailability of public databases and protocols to study solutions and compare results. To this purpose we introduce the publicly available PRINT-ATTACK database and exemplify how to use its companion protocol with a motion-based algorithm that detects correlations between the person's head movements and the scene context. The results are to be used as basis for comparison to other counter-measure techniques. The PRINT-ATTACK database contains 200 videos of real-accesses and 200 videos of spoof attempts using printed photographs of 50 different identities

    Polymer-based 3-D printing of G-band metal-pipe rectangular waveguide components

    The objective of this thesis is to investigate the use of low-cost polymer-based 3-D printing for G-band (140 to 220 GHz) metal-pipe rectangular waveguide (MPRWG) components. First, various preliminary designs are investigated. Then, a successful ‘trough-and-lid’ assembly is demonstrated, which mitigates against the main design challenges for split-block waveguide construction at upper-millimeter-wave frequencies (ca. 100 GHz to 300 GHz), and can be realized using low-cost 3-D printing and conventional metal plating techniques. With this assembly, inexpensive masked stereolithographic apparatus (MSLA) 3-D printers and a standard commercial copper electroplating service are used. The trough-and-lid assembly is expected to provide a standard solution for the low-cost and low loss realization of most MPRWG implementations above 100 GHz; previously, this was infeasible without the use of high-cost, state-of-the-art 3-D printing and/or custom-developed metal plating techniques. Three different component types are successfully demonstrated: (i) straight thru lines; (ii) 90° twists; and (iii) bandpass filters (BPFs). Along with frequency-domain S-parameter measurements, a detailed time-domain reflectometry analysis is also included. For the more accurate characterization of these components, the additional insertion loss due to conductor surface roughness is investigated. Finally, the integration of an MPRWG component into a millimeter-wave subsystem, which is based on the design of a radiometer front-end, is presented.Open Acces
