    Towards a service-oriented e-infrastructure for multidisciplinary environmental research

    Research e-infrastructures are considered to have generic and thematic parts. The generic part provids high-speed networks, grid (large-scale distributed computing) and database systems (digital repositories and data transfer systems) applicable to all research commnities irrespective of discipline. Thematic parts are specific deployments of e-infrastructures to support diverse virtual research communities. The needs of a virtual community of multidisciplinary envronmental researchers are yet to be investigated. We envisage and argue for an e-infrastructure that will enable environmental researchers to develop environmental models and software entirely out of existing components through loose coupling of diverse digital resources based on the service-oriented achitecture. We discuss four specific aspects for consideration for a future e-infrastructure: 1) provision of digital resources (data, models & tools) as web services, 2) dealing with stateless and non-transactional nature of web services using workflow management systems, 3) enabling web servce discovery, composition and orchestration through semantic registries, and 4) creating synergy with existing grid infrastructures

    Integrated Assessment Modelling of Complexity in the New Zealand Farming Industry

    As New Zealand farming industry pursues more productivity this has implication for environment and makes land use and agricultural policy decision processes more complex for which integrated assessment modeling (IAM) can support. The purpose of this review paper is to propose means through which IAM can be improved specifically to minimize uncertainties and increase relevance, reliability, and utility of outputs of different models. Literature suggests that the general motivation for land use change is that farmers do consider the environment, but need to maintain profitability. There are handful decision support tools for land use and land policy decisions but one common feature of most of the models is that each seems suitable for only a part of the complexity. An appropriate framework for linking different models in an integrated assessment is still needed. As integrated assessment often goes beyond an individual researcher‘s role, research institutions need to align their research portfolio across the dimensions of the complexity by creating an appropriate mechanism to integrate individual research into integrated assessments while individual researchers need to present modelling results in a compatible format for integration into another model‘s application.integrated assessment, modeling, complexity, farming industry, New Zealand, Agribusiness, Land Economics/Use,

    Mapping and Describing Geospatial Data to Generalize Complex Models: The Case of LittoSIM-GEN

    For some scientific questions, empirical data are essential to develop reliable simulation models. These data usually come from different sources with diverse and heterogeneous formats. The design of complex data-driven models is often shaped by the structure of the data available in research projects. Hence, applying such models to other case studies requires either to get similar data or to transform new data to fit the model inputs. It is the case of agent-based models (ABMs) that use advanced data structures such as Geographic Information Systems data. We faced this problem in the LittoSIM-GEN project when generalizing our participatory flooding model (LittoSIM) to new territories. From this experience, we provide a mapping approach to structure, describe, and automatize the integration of geospatial data into ABMs

    The emergence of complicated problems encountering the urban environment, like absence of sustainability, has led to the initiation of the notion called Intelligent Urban Conglomerations . It aimed to maintain a minimal level of balance between features of the urban environment, through clinging to more prudent actions towards urban policies, like increasing awareness of healthy environment, energy, mobility organization, and other issues. A great and persisting need has emerged for a practical scientific evaluation means for urban plans in all of their technical phases. The research aims to advance a practical methodology for monitoring and evaluating urban projects, throughout designing, implementation, and operation phases, and parallel to the designer thoughts and ideas. It proposes a criterion for measuring the efficiency, positive conformation, and consequently the “intelligence” of the urban conglomeration under study. Aiming for certain standards to be achieved in policies throughout the planned or currently functioning urban clusters, the proposed measuring scale was able to assign a certain rank to a specific urban cluster put under study in order to evaluate its intelligence .     Evolution and cost of measurement equipment, continuous training, and distance learning make it difficult to provide a complete set of updated workbenches to every student. For a preliminary familiarization and experimentation with instrumentation and measurement procedures, the use of virtual equipment is often considered more than sufficient from the didactic point of view, while the hands-on approach with real instrumentation and measurement systems still remains necessary to complete and refine the student's practical expertise. Creation and distribution of workbenches in networked computer laboratories therefore becomes attractive and convenient.     According to the 2005 International Technology Roadmap for Semiconductors, the integration of emerging nondigital CMOS technologies will require radically different test methods, posing a major challenge for designers and test engineers. One such technology is microelectronic fluidic (MEF) arrays, which have rapidly gained importance in many biological, pharmaceutical, and industrial applications. The advantages of these systems, such as operation speed, use of very small amounts of liquid, on-board droplet detection, signal conditioning, and vast digital signal processing, make them very promising. However, testable design of these devices in a mass-production environment is still in its infancy, hampering their low-cost introduction to the market.
