    Teaching the Native and Foreign Language at High School Using the Possibilities of Case Linguistics

    Corpus linguistics is a modern direction in the field of linguistics, which involves the accumulation of texts in this language with grammatical markup and the possibility of advanced search. The corpus implies the possibility of quick implementation of statistical sampling for any period of interest to the researcher, as well as the collection and analysis of contexts for the use of the studied word or group of words. The ability to collect corpuses of texts and use them is inextricably linked with the technical progress of the second half of the twentieth century: in fact, Internet search engines use the technology of intelligent search, largely due to the achievements of corpus linguistics. The possibilities of the various languages collecting corpuses are practically not mastered in the teaching of both the native and foreign languages. This article proposes an option to use the capabilities of the National Corpus of the Russian Language and the British Corpus in order to motivate students and perform mini-linguistic research. The indicated technology has been repeatedly tested at bachelors and masters of linguistic and philological specialties with a positive result. The introduction of interaction with the corpus of texts into classes positively affects both the students’ research competence and the development of skills in mastering modern technologies and the capabilities of the digital society. The mini-studies can even be conducted by first-year bachelors, since they do not require deep linguistic knowledge. When presenting the results of their research, students can go on to compare and research the received statistical data. When mastering both a foreign and a native language, working with the corpus makes it possible to look at words from a new angle and demonstrate the relationship between the history of society and the history of words.     Refining the use of the web (and web search) as a language teaching and learning resource

    The web is a potentially useful corpus for language study because it provides examples of language that are contextualized and authentic, and is large and easily searchable. However, web contents are heterogeneous in the extreme, uncontrolled and hence 'dirty,' and exhibit features different from the written and spoken texts in other linguistic corpora. This article explores the use of the web and web search as a resource for language teaching and learning. We describe how a particular derived corpus containing a trillion word tokens in the form of n-grams has been filtered by word lists and syntactic constraints and used to create three digital library collections, linked with other corpora and the live web, that exploit the affordances of web text and mitigate some of its constraints

    Utilizing the Quranic Arabic Corpus as a Supplementary Teaching and Learning Material for Arabic Syntax: An Overview of a Web-based Arabic Linguistics Corpus

    This article discusses the plan to implement the Quranic Arabic Corpus for the development of Arabic syntax teaching and learning materials (TLM), especially at the university level. The study explores an alternative Arabic syntax TLM development by utilizing a corpus, one of the most important linguistic research resources. In recent years, corpora have been widely utilized in developing teaching materials. The Quranic Arabic Corpus is beneficial not just in terms of additional references or examples, but also in facilitating grammatical understanding and discussion. The highly adequate syntactic annotations recorded in this corpus can also be used to discover and explore the syntactic analysis of every word in the Quran, so that it can be easily implemented in the analysis, examples of each chapter, or section of the discussions in Arabic syntax. Based on the analysis of this corpus’s content and its relevance with the existing Arabic syntax teaching materials, it is shown that this corpus can be incorporated as a supplement of Arabic syntax TLM. The following six steps should be followed to utilize this corpus in Arabic Syntax learning: (1) prepare the necessary tools, (2) select learning materials, (3) determine keywords, (4) access QAC, (5) search for keywords in QAC, and (6) select search results and proceed with the syntactic analysis.     A new web interface to facilitate access to corpora: development of the ASLLRP data access interface

    A significant obstacle to broad utilization of corpora is the difficulty in gaining access to the specific subsets of data and annotations that may be relevant for particular types of research. With that in mind, we have developed a web-based Data Access Interface (DAI), to provide access to the expanding datasets of the American Sign Language Linguistic Research Project (ASLLRP). The DAI facilitates browsing the corpora, viewing videos and annotations, searching for phenomena of interest, and downloading selected materials from the website. The web interface, compared to providing videos and annotation files off-line, also greatly increases access by people that have no prior experience in working with linguistic annotation tools, and it opens the door to integrating the data with third-party applications on the desktop and in the mobile space. In this paper we give an overview of the available videos, annotations, and search functionality of the DAI, as well as plans for future enhancements. We also summarize best practices and key lessons learned that are crucial to the success of similar projects
