On the eigenfilter design method and its applications: a tutorial

    Get PDF
The eigenfilter method for digital filter design involves the computation of filter coefficients as the eigenvector of an appropriate Hermitian matrix. Because of its low complexity as compared to other methods as well as its ability to incorporate various time and frequency-domain constraints easily, the eigenfilter method has been found to be very useful. In this paper, we present a review of the eigenfilter design method for a wide variety of filters, including linear-phase finite impulse response (FIR) filters, nonlinear-phase FIR filters, all-pass infinite impulse response (IIR) filters, arbitrary response IIR filters, and multidimensional filters. Also, we focus on applications of the eigenfilter method in multistage filter design, spectral/spacial beamforming, and in the design of channel-shortening equalizers for communications applications

A new method for designing causal stable IIR variable fractional delay digital filters

    Get PDF
This paper studies the design of causal stable Farrow-based infinite-impulse response (IIR) variable fractional delay digital filters (VFDDFs), whose subfilters have a common denominator. This structure has the advantages of reduced implementation complexity and avoiding undesirable transient response when tuning the spectral parameter in the Farrow structure. The design of such IIR VFDDFs is based on a new model reduction technique which is able to incorporate prescribed flatness and peak error constraints to the IIR VFDDF under the second order cone programming framework. Design example is given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach. © 2007 IEEE.published_or_final_versio

A semi-definite programming (SDP) method for designing IIR sharp cut-off digital filters using frequency-response masking

IEEE International Symposium on Circuits and Systems Proceedings, Vancouver, Canada, 23-26 May 2004This paper studies the design of frequency response masking (FRM) filters with infinite duration impulse response (IIR) model and masking sub-filters. They are useful in realizing sharp cutoff digital filters with low passband delays. The designs of the model and masking filters are carried out by means of semidefinite programming (SDP) and model order reduction. Design results show that low complexity FRM filters with low passband delay can be obtained.published_or_final_versio

Multi-plet two-channel perfect reconstruction filter banks

    Get PDF
This paper proposes a new class of two-channel structural perfect reconstruction (PR) FIR filter banks (FBs) called the multi-plet FB. It generalizes structural PR FBs proposed by Phoong et al. and triplet FBs by employing multiple lifting steps similar to the conventional lifting structure. Apart from the important structural PR property, the multi-plet FB can be systematically designed to meet a given specification on the passband/stopband ripples and transition bandwidth. A low order prototype PR FB with a much wider transition band is first designed in order to obtain prescribed passband and stopband ripples. A subfilter is then designed so that the prototype FB can be wrapped by means of frequency transformation to meet the desired transition bandwidth, while preserving the PR condition, passband/stopband ripples and lifting structure. The design procedure is very general and it can be applied to both linearphase and low-delay multi-plet FBs. Design examples show that the proposed approach is more flexible in controlling the frequency characteristics of the PR FBs and has a lower design complexity than conventional methods. © 2005 IEEE.published_or_final_versio

Design of multi-plet perfect reconstruction filter banks using frequency-response masking technique

This paper proposes a new design method for a class of two-channel perfect reconstruction (PR) filter banks (FBs) called multi-plet FBs with very sharp cutoff using frequency- response masking (FRM) technique. The multi-plet FBs are PR FBs and their frequency characteristics are controlled by a single subfilter. By recognizing the close relationship between the subfilter and the FRM-based halfband filter, very sharp cutoff PR multi-plet FBs can be realized with reduced implementation complexity. The design procedure is very general and it can be applied to both linear-phase and low-delay PR FBs. Design examples are given to demonstrate the usefulness of the proposed method. © 2008 IEEE.published_or_final_versio

IIR approximation of FIR filters via discrete-time vector fitting

    Get PDF
We present a novel technique for approximating finite-impulse-response (FIR) filters with infinite-impulse-response (IIR) structures through extending the vector fitting (VF) algorithm, used extensively for continuous-time frequency-domain rational approximation, to its discrete-time counterpart called VFz. VFz directly computes the candidate filter poles and iteratively relocates them for progressively better approximation. Each VFz iteration consists of the solutions of an overdetermined linear equation and an eigenvalue problem, with real-domain arithmetic to accommodate complex poles. Pole flipping and maximum pole radius constraint guarantee stability and robustness against finite-precision implementation. Comparison against existing algorithms confirms that VFz generally exhibits fast convergence and produces highly accurate IIR approximants. © 2008 IEEE.published_or_final_versio

Recent Advances in Variable Digital Filters

    Get PDF
Variable digital filters are widely used in a number of applications of signal processing because of their capability of self-tuning frequency characteristics such as the cutoff frequency and the bandwidth. This chapter introduces recent advances on variable digital filters, focusing on the problems of design and realization, and application to adaptive filtering. In the topic on design and realization, we address two major approaches: one is the frequency transformation and the other is the multi-dimensional polynomial approximation of filter coefficients. In the topic on adaptive filtering, we introduce the details of adaptive band-pass/band-stop filtering that include the well-known adaptive notch filtering

The new technology advances provide that a great number of system signals can be easily measured with a low cost. The main problem is that usually only a fraction of the signal is useful for different purposes, for example maintenance, DVD-recorders, computers, electric/electronic circuits, econometric, optimization, etc. Digital filters are the most versatile, practical and effective methods for extracting the information necessary from the signal. They can be dynamic, so they can be automatically or manually adjusted to the external and internal conditions. Presented in this book are the most advanced digital filters including different case studies and the most relevant literature

HR approximation of FIR filters via discrete-time hybrid-domain vector fitting

    Get PDF
We present a discrete-time hybrid-domain vector fitting algorithm, called HD-VFz, for the HR approximation of FIR filters with an arbitrary combination of time- and frequency-sampled responses. The core routine involves a two-step pole refinement process based on a linear least-squares solve and an eigenvalue problem. Through hybrid-domain data approximation and digital partial fraction basis with relative stability consideration, HD-VFz exhibits fast computation and remarkable fitting accuracy in both time and frequency domains. © 2009 IEEE.published_or_final_versio
