    Aerial navigation in obstructed environments with embedded nonlinear model predictive control

    We propose a methodology for autonomous aerial navigation and obstacle avoidance of micro aerial vehicles (MAV) using nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC) and we demonstrate its effectiveness with laboratory experiments. The proposed methodology can accommodate obstacles of arbitrary, potentially non-convex, geometry. The NMPC problem is solved using PANOC: a fast numerical optimization method which is completely matrix-free, is not sensitive to ill conditioning, involves only simple algebraic operations and is suitable for embedded NMPC. A C89 implementation of PANOC solves the NMPC problem at a rate of 20Hz on board a lab-scale MAV. The MAV performs smooth maneuvers moving around an obstacle. For increased autonomy, we propose a simple method to compensate for the reduction of thrust over time, which comes from the depletion of the MAV's battery, by estimating the thrust constant

    Aerial-Ground collaborative sensing: Third-Person view for teleoperation

    Rapid deployment and operation are key requirements in time critical application, such as Search and Rescue (SaR). Efficiently teleoperated ground robots can support first-responders in such situations. However, first-person view teleoperation is sub-optimal in difficult terrains, while a third-person perspective can drastically increase teleoperation performance. Here, we propose a Micro Aerial Vehicle (MAV)-based system that can autonomously provide third-person perspective to ground robots. While our approach is based on local visual servoing, it further leverages the global localization of several ground robots to seamlessly transfer between these ground robots in GPS-denied environments. Therewith one MAV can support multiple ground robots on a demand basis. Furthermore, our system enables different visual detection regimes, and enhanced operability, and return-home functionality.     Effective Target Aware Visual Navigation for UAVs

    In this paper we propose an effective vision-based navigation method that allows a multirotor vehicle to simultaneously reach a desired goal pose in the environment while constantly facing a target object or landmark. Standard techniques such as Position-Based Visual Servoing (PBVS) and Image-Based Visual Servoing (IBVS) in some cases (e.g., while the multirotor is performing fast maneuvers) do not allow to constantly maintain the line of sight with a target of interest. Instead, we compute the optimal trajectory by solving a non-linear optimization problem that minimizes the target re-projection error while meeting the UAV's dynamic constraints. The desired trajectory is then tracked by means of a real-time Non-linear Model Predictive Controller (NMPC): this implicitly allows the multirotor to satisfy both the required constraints. We successfully evaluate the proposed approach in many real and simulated experiments, making an exhaustive comparison with a standard approach.Comment: Conference paper at "European Conference on Mobile Robotics" (ECMR) 201

    Modeling and nonlinear adaptive control of an aerial manipulation system

    Autonomous aerial robots have become an essential part of many civilian and military applications. The workspace and agility of these vehicles motivated great research interest resulting in various studies addressing their control architectures and mechanical configurations. Increasing autonomy enabled them to perform tasks such as surveillance, inspection and remote sensing in hazardous and challenging environments. The ongoing research promises further contributions to the society, in both theory and practice. To furthermore extend their vast applications, aerial robots are equipped with the tools to enable physical interaction with the environment. These tasks represent a great challenge due to the technological limitations as well as the lack of sophisticated methods necessary for the control of the system to perform desired operations in an efficient and stable manner. Modeling and control problem of an aerial manipulation is still an open research topic with many studies addressing these issues from different perspectives. This thesis deals with the nonlinear adaptive control of an aerial manipulation system (AMS). The system consists of a quadrotor equipped with a 2 degrees of freedom (DOF) manipulator. The complete modeling of the system is done using the Euler-Lagrange method. A hierarchical nonlinear control structure which consists of outer and inner control loops has been utilized. Model Reference Adaptive Controller (MRAC) is designed for the outer loop where the required command signals are generated to force the quadrotor to move on a reference trajectory in the presence of mass uncertainties and reaction forces coming from the manipulator. For the inner loop, the attitude dynamics of the quadrotor and the joint dynamics of the 2-DOF robotic arm are considered as a fully actuated 5-DOF unified part of the AMS. Nonlinear adaptive control has been utilized for the low-level controller where the changes in inertias have been considered. The proposed controller is tested on a high fidelity AMS model in the presence of uncertainties, wind disturbances and measurement noise, and satisfactory trajectory tracking performance with improved robustness is achieved

    Cooperation of unmanned systems for agricultural applications: A theoretical framework

    Agriculture 4.0 comprises a set of technologies that combines sensors, information systems, enhanced machinery, and informed management with the objective of optimising production by accounting for variabilities and uncertainties within agricultural systems. Autonomous ground and aerial vehicles can lead to favourable improvements in management by performing in-field tasks in a time-effective way. In particular, greater benefits can be achieved by allowing cooperation and collaborative action among unmanned vehicles, both aerial and ground, to perform in-field operations in precise and time-effective ways. In this work, the preliminary and crucial step of analysing and understanding the technical and methodological challenges concerning the main problems involved is performed. An overview of the agricultural scenarios that can benefit from using collaborative machines and the corresponding cooperative schemes typically adopted in this framework are presented. A collection of kinematic and dynamic models for different categories of autonomous aerial and ground vehicles is provided, which represents a crucial step in understanding the vehicles behaviour when full autonomy is desired. Last, a collection of the state-of-the-art technologies for the autonomous guidance of drones is provided, summarising their peculiar characteristics, and highlighting their advantages and shortcomings with a specific focus on the Agriculture 4.0 framework. A companion paper reports the application of some of these techniques in a complete case study in sloped vineyards, applying the proposed multi-phase collaborative scheme introduced here

    Model Predictive Control for Micro Aerial Vehicles: A Survey

    This paper presents a review of the design and application of model predictive control strategies for Micro Aerial Vehicles and specifically multirotor configurations such as quadrotors. The diverse set of works in the domain is organized based on the control law being optimized over linear or nonlinear dynamics, the integration of state and input constraints, possible fault-tolerant design, if reinforcement learning methods have been utilized and if the controller refers to free-flight or other tasks such as physical interaction or load transportation. A selected set of comparison results are also presented and serve to provide insight for the selection between linear and nonlinear schemes, the tuning of the prediction horizon, the importance of disturbance observer-based offset-free tracking and the intrinsic robustness of such methods to parameter uncertainty. Furthermore, an overview of recent research trends on the combined application of modern deep reinforcement learning techniques and model predictive control for multirotor vehicles is presented. Finally, this review concludes with explicit discussion regarding selected open-source software packages that deliver off-the-shelf model predictive control functionality applicable to a wide variety of Micro Aerial Vehicle configurations

    Sampling-based Motion Planning for Active Multirotor System Identification

    This paper reports on an algorithm for planning trajectories that allow a multirotor micro aerial vehicle (MAV) to quickly identify a set of unknown parameters. In many problems like self calibration or model parameter identification some states are only observable under a specific motion. These motions are often hard to find, especially for inexperienced users. Therefore, we consider system model identification in an active setting, where the vehicle autonomously decides what actions to take in order to quickly identify the model. Our algorithm approximates the belief dynamics of the system around a candidate trajectory using an extended Kalman filter (EKF). It uses sampling-based motion planning to explore the space of possible beliefs and find a maximally informative trajectory within a user-defined budget. We validate our method in simulation and on a real system showing the feasibility and repeatability of the proposed approach. Our planner creates trajectories which reduce model parameter convergence time and uncertainty by a factor of four.Comment: Published at ICRA 2017.
