Wireless MIMO Switching: Weighted Sum Mean Square Error and Sum Rate Optimization
This paper addresses joint transceiver and relay design for a wireless
multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) switching scheme that enables data
exchange among multiple users. Here, a multi-antenna relay linearly precodes
the received (uplink) signals from multiple users before forwarding the signal
in the downlink, where the purpose of precoding is to let each user receive its
desired signal with interference from other users suppressed. The problem of
optimizing the precoder based on various design criteria is typically
non-convex and difficult to solve. The main contribution of this paper is a
unified approach to solve the weighted sum mean square error (MSE) minimization
and weighted sum rate maximization problems in MIMO switching. Specifically, an
iterative algorithm is proposed for jointly optimizing the relay's precoder and
the users' receive filters to minimize the weighted sum MSE. It is also shown
that the weighted sum rate maximization problem can be reformulated as an
iterated weighted sum MSE minimization problem and can therefore be solved
similarly to the case of weighted sum MSE minimization. With properly chosen
initial values, the proposed iterative algorithms are asymptotically optimal in
both high and low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regimes for MIMO switching,
either with or without self-interference cancellation (a.k.a., physical-layer
network coding). Numerical results show that the optimized MIMO switching
scheme based on the proposed algorithms significantly outperforms existing
approaches in the literature.Comment: This manuscript is under 2nd review of IEEE Transactions on

Robust Transmissions in Wireless Powered Multi-Relay Networks with Chance Interference Constraints
In this paper, we consider a wireless powered multi-relay network in which a
multi-antenna hybrid access point underlaying a cellular system transmits
information to distant receivers. Multiple relays capable of energy harvesting
are deployed in the network to assist the information transmission. The hybrid
access point can wirelessly supply energy to the relays, achieving multi-user
gains from signal and energy cooperation. We propose a joint optimization for
signal beamforming of the hybrid access point as well as wireless energy
harvesting and collaborative beamforming strategies of the relays. The
objective is to maximize network throughput subject to probabilistic
interference constraints at the cellular user equipment. We formulate the
throughput maximization with both the time-switching and power-splitting
schemes, which impose very different couplings between the operating parameters
for wireless power and information transfer. Although the optimization problems
are inherently non-convex, they share similar structural properties that can be
leveraged for efficient algorithm design. In particular, by exploiting
monotonicity in the throughput, we maximize it iteratively via customized
polyblock approximation with reduced complexity. The numerical results show
that the proposed algorithms can achieve close to optimal performance in terms
of the energy efficiency and throughput.Comment: 14 pages, 8 figure
Design guidelines for spatial modulation
A new class of low-complexity, yet energyefficient Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) transmission techniques, namely the family of Spatial Modulation (SM) aided MIMOs (SM-MIMO) has emerged. These systems are capable of exploiting the spatial dimensions (i.e. the antenna indices) as an additional dimension invoked for transmitting information, apart from the traditional Amplitude and Phase Modulation (APM). SM is capable of efficiently operating in diverse MIMO configurations in the context of future communication systems. It constitutes a promising transmission candidate for large-scale MIMO design and for the indoor optical wireless communication whilst relying on a single-Radio Frequency (RF) chain. Moreover, SM may also be viewed as an entirely new hybrid modulation scheme, which is still in its infancy. This paper aims for providing a general survey of the SM design framework as well as of its intrinsic limits. In particular, we focus our attention on the associated transceiver design, on spatial constellation optimization, on link adaptation techniques, on distributed/ cooperative protocol design issues, and on their meritorious variants
Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces for Energy Efficiency in Wireless Communication
The adoption of a Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (RIS) for downlink
multi-user communication from a multi-antenna base station is investigated in
this paper. We develop energy-efficient designs for both the transmit power
allocation and the phase shifts of the surface reflecting elements, subject to
individual link budget guarantees for the mobile users. This leads to
non-convex design optimization problems for which to tackle we propose two
computationally affordable approaches, capitalizing on alternating
maximization, gradient descent search, and sequential fractional programming.
Specifically, one algorithm employs gradient descent for obtaining the RIS
phase coefficients, and fractional programming for optimal transmit power
allocation. Instead, the second algorithm employs sequential fractional
programming for the optimization of the RIS phase shifts. In addition, a
realistic power consumption model for RIS-based systems is presented, and the
performance of the proposed methods is analyzed in a realistic outdoor
environment. In particular, our results show that the proposed RIS-based
resource allocation methods are able to provide up to higher energy
efficiency, in comparison with the use of regular multi-antenna
amplify-and-forward relaying.Comment: Accepted by IEEE TWC; additional materials on the topic are included

Dirty Paper Coding Based Optimal MIMO Relay Communications
In this paper, we address the optimal source and relay matrices design issue for a multiple-input multiple-output(MIMO) relay network using the dirty paper coding (DPC) scheme at the source node. The aim is to minimize the meansquared error (MSE) of the signal waveform estimation at the destination. Using the property of uplink-downlink duality, the original DPC-based MIMO relay system is first converted to a dual system with a decision feedback equalizer (DFE) at the destination. Then we jointly optimize the source and relay matrices of the dual system. Finally the optimal source and relay matrices of the DPC-based system are obtained by exploiting the link between the source, relay, and destination matrices of the original and dual MIMO relay systems. Simulation resultsdemonstrate that the proposed DPC-based MIMO relay system performs much better than the existing linear minimal MSE (MMSE)-based relaying approach in terms of bit-error-rate
Rate-Energy Balanced Precoding Design for SWIPT based Two-Way Relay Systems
Simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) technique is a
popular strategy to convey both information and RF energy for harvesting at
receivers. In this regard, we consider a two-way relay system with multiple
users and a multi-antenna relay employing SWIPT strategy, where splitting the
received signal leads to a rate-energy trade-off. In literature, the works on
transceiver design have been studied using computationally intensive and
suboptimal convex relaxation based schemes. In this paper, we study the
balanced precoder design using chordal distance (CD) decomposition, which
incurs much lower complexity, and is flexible to dynamic energy requirements.
It is analyzed that given a non-negative value of CD, the achieved harvested
energy for the proposed balanced precoder is higher than that for the perfect
interference alignment (IA) precoder. The corresponding loss in sum rates is
also analyzed via an upper bound. Simulation results add that the IA schemes
based on mean-squared error are better suited for the SWIPT maximization than
the subspace alignment-based methods.Comment: arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:2101.1216
