    Model for Estimation of Bounds in Digital Coding of Seabed Images

    This paper proposes the novel model for estimation of bounds in digital coding of images. Entropy coding of images is exploited to measure the useful information content of the data. The bit rate achieved by reversible compression using the rate-distortion theory approach takes into account the contribution of the observation noise and the intrinsic information of hypothetical noise-free image. Assuming the Laplacian probability density function of the quantizer input signal, SQNR gains are calculated for image predictive coding system with non-adaptive quantizer for white and correlated noise, respectively. The proposed model is evaluated on seabed images. However, model presented in this paper can be applied to any signal with Laplacian distribution

    Micro-doppler-based in-home aided and unaided walking recognition with multiple radar and sonar systems

Online first 21/06/2016.The potential for using micro-Doppler signatures as a basis for distinguishing between aided and unaided gaits is considered in this study for the purpose of characterising normal elderly gait and assessment of patient recovery. In particular, five different classes of mobility are considered: normal unaided walking, walking with a limp, walking using a cane or tripod, walking with a walker, and using a wheelchair. This presents a challenging classification problem as the differences in micro-Doppler for these activities can be quite slight. Within this context, the performance of four different radar and sonar systems – a 40 kHz sonar, a 5.8 GHz wireless pulsed Doppler radar mote, a 10 GHz X-band continuous wave (CW) radar, and a 24 GHz CW radar – is evaluated using a broad range of features. Performance improvements using feature selection is addressed as well as the impact on performance of sensor placement and potential occlusion due to household objects. Results show that nearly 80% correct classification can be achieved with 10 s observations from the 24 GHz CW radar, whereas 86% performance can be achieved with 5 s observations of sonar

    Gait Classification Based on Micro-Doppler Features

    This paper focuses on the classification of human gaits based on micro-Doppler signatures. The micro-Doppler signatures can represent detailed information about the human gaits, which helps in judging the threat of a personnel target. The proposed method consists of three major steps. Firstly, the micro-Doppler signatures are obtained by performing time-frequency analysis on the radar data. Then two micro-Doppler features are extracted from the time-frequency domain. Finally, the one-versus-one support vector machine (SVM) is used to realize multi-class classification. Experiments on real data show that, with the selected features, high classification accuracy of the human gaits of interest can be achieved

    Towards Indonesian Speech-Emotion Automatic Recognition (I-SpEAR)

    Even though speech-emotion recognition (SER) has been receiving much attention as research topic, there are still some disputes about which vocal features can identify certain emotion. Emotion expression is also known to be differed according to the cultural backgrounds that make it important to study SER specific to the culture where the language belongs to. Furthermore, only a few studies addresses the SER in Indonesian which what this study attempts to explore. In this study, we extract simple features from 3420 voice data gathered from 38 participants. The features are compared by means of linear mixed effect model which shows that people who are in emotional and non-emotional state can be differentiated by their speech duration.     Normal-Mixture-of-Inverse-Gamma Priors for Bayesian Regularization and Model Selection in Structured Additive Regression Models

    In regression models with many potential predictors, choosing an appropriate subset of covariates and their interactions at the same time as determining whether linear or more flexible functional forms are required is a challenging and important task. We propose a spike-and-slab prior structure in order to include or exclude single coefficients as well as blocks of coefficients associated with factor variables, random effects or basis expansions of smooth functions. Structured additive models with this prior structure are estimated with Markov Chain Monte Carlo using a redundant multiplicative parameter expansion. We discuss shrinkage properties of the novel prior induced by the redundant parameterization, investigate its sensitivity to hyperparameter settings and compare performance of the proposed method in terms of model selection, sparsity recovery, and estimation error for Gaussian, binomial and Poisson responses on real and simulated data sets with that of component-wise boosting and other approaches

    Feature diversity for optimized human micro-doppler classification using multistatic radar

    This paper investigates the selection of different combinations of features at different multistatic radar nodes, depending on scenario parameters, such as aspect angle to the target and signal-to-noise ratio, and radar parameters, such as dwell time, polarisation, and frequency band. Two sets of experimental data collected with the multistatic radar system NetRAD are analysed for two separate problems, namely the classification of unarmed vs potentially armed multiple personnel, and the personnel recognition of individuals based on walking gait. The results show that the overall classification accuracy can be significantly improved by taking into account feature diversity at each radar node depending on the environmental parameters and target behaviour, in comparison with the conventional approach of selecting the same features for all nodes

    A Neural Network Architecture for Autonomous Learning, Recognition, and Prediction in a Nonstationary World

    In a constantly changing world, humans are adapted to alternate routinely between attending to familiar objects and testing hypotheses about novel ones. We can rapidly learn to recognize and narne novel objects without unselectively disrupting our memories of familiar ones. We can notice fine details that differentiate nearly identical objects and generalize across broad classes of dissimilar objects. This chapter describes a class of self-organizing neural network architectures--called ARTMAP-- that are capable of fast, yet stable, on-line recognition learning, hypothesis testing, and naming in response to an arbitrary stream of input patterns (Carpenter, Grossberg, Markuzon, Reynolds, and Rosen, 1992; Carpenter, Grossberg, and Reynolds, 1991). The intrinsic stability of ARTMAP allows the system to learn incrementally for an unlimited period of time. System stability properties can be traced to the structure of its learned memories, which encode clusters of attended features into its recognition categories, rather than slow averages of category inputs. The level of detail in the learned attentional focus is determined moment-by-moment, depending on predictive success: an error due to over-generalization automatically focuses attention on additional input details enough of which are learned in a new recognition category so that the predictive error will not be repeated. An ARTMAP system creates an evolving map between a variable number of learned categories that compress one feature space (e.g., visual features) to learned categories of another feature space (e.g., auditory features). Input vectors can be either binary or analog. Computational properties of the networks enable them to perform significantly better in benchmark studies than alternative machine learning, genetic algorithm, or neural network models. Some of the critical problems that challenge and constrain any such autonomous learning system will next be illustrated. Design principles that work together to solve these problems are then outlined. These principles are realized in the ARTMAP architecture, which is specified as an algorithm.     Towards Surgically-Precise Technical Debt Estimation: Early Results and Research Roadmap

    The concept of technical debt has been explored from many perspectives but its precise estimation is still under heavy empirical and experimental inquiry. We aim to understand whether, by harnessing approximate, data-driven, machine-learning approaches it is possible to improve the current techniques for technical debt estimation, as represented by a top industry quality analysis tool such as SonarQube. For the sake of simplicity, we focus on relatively simple regression modelling techniques and apply them to modelling the additional project cost connected to the sub-optimal conditions existing in the projects under study. Our results shows that current techniques can be improved towards a more precise estimation of technical debt and the case study shows promising results towards the identification of more accurate estimation of technical debt.Comment: 6 page
