A Review of Social-Aware Navigation Frameworks for Service Robot in Dynamic Human Environments
The emergence of service robot into human daily life in the past years has opened up various challenges including human-robot interaction, joint-goal achievement and machine learning. Social-aware navigation also gains vast research attention in enhancing the social capabilities of service robots. Human motions are stochastic and social conventions are very complex. Sophisticated approaches are needed for a robot to abide to these social rules and perform obstacle avoidance. To maintain the level of social comfort and achieve a given task, the robot navigation is now no longer a search for a shortest collision-free path, but a multi-objective problem that requires a unified social-aware navigation framework. A careful selection of navigation components including global planner, local planner, the prediction model and a suitable robot platform is also required to offer an effective navigation amidst the dynamic human environment. Hence, this review paper aims to offer insights for service robot implementation by highlighting four varieties of navigation frameworks, various navigation components and different robot platforms
Recent Progress in Legged Robots Locomotion Control
International audiencePurpose of review. In recent years, legged robots locomotion has been transitioning from mostly flat ground in controlled settings to generic indoor and outdoor environments, approaching now real industrial scenarios. This paper aims at documenting some of the key progress made in legged locomotion control that enabled this transition. Recent findings. Legged locomotion control makes extensive use of numerical trajectory optimization and its online implementation, Model Predictive Control. A key progress has been how this optimization is handled, with refined models and refined numerical methods. This led the legged locomotion research community to heavily invest in and contribute to the development of new optimization methods and efficient numerical software
Design and Experiments of a Novel Humanoid Robot with Parallel Architectures
In this paper, the mechanical design of the LARMbot 2, a low-cost user-oriented humanoid robot was presented. LARMbot 2 is characterized by parallel architectures for both the torso and legs. The proposed design was presented with the kinematics of its main parts—legs, torso, arms—and then compared to its previous version, which was characterized by a different leg mechanism, to highlight the advantages of the latest design. A prototype was then presented, with constructive details of its subsystems and its technical specifications. To characterize the performance of the proposed robot, experimental results were presented for both the walking and weight-lifting operations
The problem of this thesis concerns the control of the movements and the equilibrium of humanoid robots that have a mobile base with omnidirectionnal wheels. The developed methods aim to reach high dynamical performances for this type of robot, while ensuring it stability and equilibrium. Humanoid robots have generally a center of mass relatively high compared to its contact surface with the ground. Therefore, the slightest acceleration of the robot bodies induces a large variation of the distribution of the contact forces with the ground. If they are not properly controlled, the robot can fall. Moreover, the robot having a mobile base with wheels, a disturbance can easily bring it to tilt on two wheels. Finally, a specific interest have been provided about the realisation of a real time controler implemented on the embedded system of the robot. This implies some constraints about the computationnal time of the control law. In order to answer these problems, two linear models of the robot have been developed. The first allows to modelize the dynamics of the robot when it has all of its wheels in contact with the ground. The second allows to modelize the dynamics of the robot when it tilts on two of its wheels. These models have been developed by taking into account the mass distribution of the robot. These models have been subsequently used in two predictive control laws, allowing to take into account at every instant the dynamical constraints as weel as the future behavior of the robot. The first allows to control the movements of the robot when it has all of its wheels in contact with the ground, preventing it for tilting. The second allows the robot to recover itself in a situation when a disturbance bring it to tilt, in order to bring back all of its wheels in contact with the ground. Also, a supervisor that has a state machine has been made in order to define which control law has to be executed at each instant. This supervisor uses the available sensors on the robot in order to observe its tilt state. Finally, in order to validate experimentally the results of the developments of this thesis, a series of experiments has been presented, demonstrating some aspects of the control law. In particular, some tests have been made concerning the tracking of non physically feasible trajectories, the reject of disturbances applied on the mobile base, the stabilisation of the robot during its tilt, and the compensation of the variations of the ground inclination.

Validation of robotic navigation strategies in unstructured environments: from autonomous to reactive
The main topic of this master thesis is the validation of a navigation algorithm designed to perform autonomously in unstructured environments. Computer simulations and experimental tests with a mobile robot have allowed reaching the established objective. The presented approach is effective, consistent, and able to attain safe navigation with static and dynamic configurations.
This work contains a survey of the principal navigation strategies and components. Afterwards, a recap of the history of robotics is briefly illustrated, emphasizing the description of mobile robotics and locomotion. Subsequently, it presents the development of an algorithm for autonomous navigation through an unknown environment for mobile robots. The algorithm seeks to compute trajectories that lead to a target unknown position without falling into a recurrent loop. The code has been entirely written and tested in MATLAB, using randomly generated obstacles of different sizes. The developed algorithm is used as a benchmark to analyze different predictive strategies for the navigation of mobile robots in the presence of environments not known a priori and overpopulated with obstacles. Then, an innovative algorithm for navigation, called NAPVIG, is described and analyzed. The algorithm has been built using ROS and tested in Gazebo real-time simulator. In order to achieve high performances, optimal parameters have been found tuning and simulating the algorithm in different environmental configurations. Finally, an experimental campaign in the SPARCS laboratory of the University of Padua enabled the validation of the chosen parameters
