Multicell coordination is a promising solution for cellular wireless systems
to mitigate inter-cell interference, improving system fairness and
increasing capacity and thus is already under study in LTE-A under the
coordinated multipoint (CoMP) concept. There are several coordinated
transmission approaches depending on the amount of information shared
by the transmitters through the backhaul network and where the
processing takes place i.e. in a central processing unit or in a distributed
way on each base station.
In this thesis, we propose joint precoding and power allocation techniques
considering different strategies: Full-centralized, where all the processing
takes place at the central unit; Semi-distributed, in this case only some
process related with power allocation is done at the central unit; and Fulldistributed,
where all the processing is done locally at each base station.
The methods are designed in two phases: first the inter-cell interference is
removed by applying a set of centralized or distributed precoding vectors;
then the system is further optimized by centralized or distributed power
allocation schemes. Three centralized power allocation algorithms with
per-BS power constraint and different complexity tradeoffs are proposed.
Also distributed power allocation schemes are proposed by considering
the multicell system as superposition of single cell systems, where we
define the average virtual bit error rate (BER) of interference-free single
cell system, allowing us to compute the power allocation coefficients in a
distributed manner at each BS.
All proposed schemes are evaluated in realistic scenarios considering LTE
specifications. The numerical evaluations show that the proposed schemes
are efficient in removing inter-cell interference and improve system
performance comparing to equal power allocation. Furthermore, fulldistributed
schemes can be used when the amounts of information to be
exchanged over the backhaul is restricted, although system performance is
slightly degraded from semi-distributed and full-centralized schemes, but
the complexity is considerably lower. Besides that for high degrees of
freedom distributed schemes show similar behaviour to centralized ones
Robust leakage-based distributed precoder for cooperative multicell systems
Coordinated multipoint (CoMP) from long term evolution (LTE)-advanced is a promising technique to enhance the system spectral efficiency. Among the CoMP techniques, joint transmission has high communication requirements, because of the data sharing phase through the backhaul network, and coordinated scheduling and beamforming reduces the backhaul requirements, since no data sharing is necessary. Most of the available CoMP techniques consider perfect channel knowledge at the transmitters. Nevertheless for practical systems this is unrealistic. Therefore in this study the authors address this limitation by proposing a robust precoder for a multicell-based systems, where each base station (BS) has only access to an imperfect local channel estimate. They consider both the case with and without data sharing. The proposed precoder is designed in a distributed manner at each BS by maximising the signal-to-leakage-and-noise ratio of all jointly processed users. By considering the channel estimation error in the design of the precoder, they are able to reduce considerably the impact of these errors in the system's performance. The results show that the proposed scheme has improved performance especially for the high signal-to-noise ratio regime, where the impact of the channel estimation error may be more pronounced
Cooperative Communications with Partial Channel State Information in Mobile Radio Systems
Future 4G mobile radio cellular networks are considered OFDM-MIMO systems. Cooperative communication based on coordinated base stations is a very promising concept to perform inter-cell interference management. This thesis deals with the concept of cooperative communication from its information-theoretic background to its practical system design. The main focus is a practical design of the joint detection scheme in the uplink and the joint transmission scheme in the downlink with partial channel-state information (CSI), i.e., significant CSI and imperfect CSI.Zukünftige zellulare 4G-Mobilfunksysteme können als OFDM-MIMO-Systeme betrachtet werden.
Interference Exploitation via Symbol-Level Precoding: Overview, State-of-the-Art and Future Directions
Interference is traditionally viewed as a performance limiting factor in wireless communication systems, which is to be minimized or mitigated. Nevertheless, a recent line of work has shown that by manipulating the interfering signals such that they add up constructively at the receiver side, known interference can be made beneficial and further improve the system performance in a variety of wireless scenarios, achieved by symbol-level precoding (SLP). This paper aims to provide a tutorial on interference exploitation techniques from the perspective of precoding design in a multi-antenna wireless communication system, by beginning with the classification of constructive interference (CI) and destructive interference (DI). The definition for CI is presented and the corresponding mathematical characterization is formulated for popular modulation types, based on which optimization-based precoding techniques are discussed. In addition, the extension of CI precoding to other application scenarios as well as for hardware efficiency is also described. Proof-of-concept testbeds are demonstrated for the potential practical implementation of CI precoding, and finally a list of open problems and practical challenges are presented to inspire and motivate further research directions in this area
Precoder design for multi-antenna transmission in MU-MIMO with QoS requirements
Abstract. A multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) interference broadcast channel (IBC) channel is considered. There are several base stations (BSs) transmitting useful information to their own users and unwanted interference to its neighboring BS users. Our main interest is to maximize the system throughput by designing transmit precoders with weighted sum rate maximization (WSRM) objective for a multi-user (MU)-MIMO transmission. In addition, we include the quality of service (QoS) requirement in terms of guaranteed minimum rate for the users in the system. Unfortunately, the problem considered is nonconvex and known to be non-deterministic polynomial (NP) hard. Therefore, to determine the transmit precoders, we first propose a centralized precoder design by considering two closely related approaches, namely, direct signal-to-interference-plus-noise-ratio (SINR) relaxation via sequential parametric convex approximation (SPCA), and mean squared error (MSE) reformulation. In both approaches, we adopt successive convex approximation (SCA) technique to solve the nonconvex optimization problem by solving a sequence of convex subproblems. Due to the huge signaling requirements in the centralized design, we propose two different distributed precoder designs, wherein each BS determines only the relevant set of transmit precoders by exchanging minimal information among the coordinating BSs. Initially, we consider designing precoders in a decentralized manner by using alternating directions method of multipliers (ADMM), wherein each BS relaxes inter-cell interference as an optimization variable by including it in the objective.
Then, we also propose a distributed precoder design by solving the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) expressions corresponding to the centralized problems. Numerical simulations are provided to compare different system configurations with QoS constraints for both centralized and distributed algorithms
