Minimum error probability MIMO-aided relaying: multihop, parallel, and cognitive designs

    No full text
A design methodology based on the minimum error probability (MEP) framework is proposed for a nonregenerative multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) relayaided system. We consider the associated cognitive, the parallel and the multi-hop source-relay-destination (SRD) link design based on this MEP framework, including the transmit precoder, the amplify-and-forward (AF) relay matrix and the receiver equalizer matrix of our system. It has been shown in the literature that MEP based communication systems are capable of improving the error probability of other linear counterparts. Our simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme indeed achieves a significant BER reduction over the existing linear schemes

DSTC designs with high diversity and coding gains and efficient detection and code matrices optimization algorithms in cooperative MIMO networks are proposed in this thesis. Firstly, adaptive power allocation (PA) algorithms with different criteria for a cooperative MIMO system equipped with DSTC schemes are proposed and evaluated. Linear receive filter and maximum likelihood (ML) detection are considered with amplify-and-forward (AF) and decode-and-forward (DF) cooperation strategies. In the proposed algorithms, the elements in the PA matrices are optimized at the destination node and then transmitted back to the relay nodes via a feedback channel. Linear minimum mean square error (MMSE) receive filter expressions and the PA matrices depend on each other and are updated iteratively. Stochastic gradient (SG) algorithms are developed with reduced detection complexity. Secondly, an DSTC scheme is proposed for two-hop cooperative MIMO networks. An adjustable code matrix obtained by a feedback channel is employed to transform the space-time coded matrix at the relay node. The effects of the limited feedback and the feedback errors are assessed. An upper bound on the pairwise error probability analysis is derived and indicates the advantage of employing the adjustable code matrices at the relay nodes. An alternative optimization algorithm for the adaptive DSTC scheme is also derived in order to eliminate the need for feedback. Thirdly, an adaptive delay-tolerant DSTC (DT-DSTC) scheme is proposed for two-hop cooperative MIMO networks. An ML receiver and adjustable code matrices are considered for different DSTC configuration schemes subject to a power constraint with a DF cooperation strategy. An upper bound on the pairwise error probability and rank criteria analysis are derived and indicates the advantage of the proposed coding algorithm. Adaptive DT-DSTC algorithms are extended to the cooperative MIMO systems using an AF strategy and opportunistic relaying algorithms in order to achieve a delay-tolerant coding scheme combined with the optimal power allocation strategies

With the research on implementing a universal quantum computer being under the technological spotlight, new possibilities appear for their employment in wireless communications systems for reducing their complexity and improving their performance. In this treatise, we consider the downlink of a rank-deficient, multi-user system and we propose the discrete-valued and continuous-valued Quantum-assisted Particle Swarm Optimization (QPSO) algorithms for performing Vector Perturbation (VP) precoding, as well as for lowering the required transmission power at the Base Station (BS), while minimizing the expected average Bit Error Ratio (BER) at the mobile terminals. We use the Minimum BER (MBER) criterion. We show that the novel quantum-assisted precoding methodology results in an enhanced BER performance, when compared to that of a classical methodology employing the PSO algorithm, while requiring the same computational complexity in the challenging rank-deficient scenarios, where the number of transmit antenna elements at the BS is lower than the number of users. Moreover, when there is limited Channel State Information (CSI) feedback from the users to the BS, due to the necessary quantization of the channel states, the proposed quantum-assisted precoder outperforms the classical precoder

A design methodology based on the Minimum Bit Error Ratio (MBER) framework is proposed for a nonregenerative Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) relayaided system to determine various linear parameters. We consider both the Relay-Destination (RD) as well as the Source- Relay-Destination (SRD) link design based on this MBER framework, including the precoder, the Amplify-and-Forward (AF) matrix and the equalizer matrix of our system. It has been shown in the previous literature that MBER based communication systems are capable of reducing the Bit-Error- Ratio (BER) compared to their Linear Minimum Mean Square Error (LMMSE) based counterparts. We design a novel relay aided system using various signal constellations, ranging from QPSK to the general M-QAM and M-PSK constellations. Finally, we propose its sub-optimal versions for reducing the computational complexity imposed. Our simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme indeed achieves a significant BER reduction over the existing LMMSE schem

Semiconductor Optical Amplifiers and mm-Wave Wireless Links for Converged Access Networks

Future access networks are converged optical-wireless networks, where fixed-line and wireless services share the same infrastructure. In this book, semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOA) and mm-wave wireless links are investigated, and their use in converged access networks is explored: SOAs compensate losses in the network, and thereby extend the network reach. Millimeter-wave wireless links substitute fiber links when cabling is not economical
