Hopf Bifurcation and Chaos in Tabu Learning Neuron Models
In this paper, we consider the nonlinear dynamical behaviors of some tabu
leaning neuron models. We first consider a tabu learning single neuron model.
By choosing the memory decay rate as a bifurcation parameter, we prove that
Hopf bifurcation occurs in the neuron. The stability of the bifurcating
periodic solutions and the direction of the Hopf bifurcation are determined by
applying the normal form theory. We give a numerical example to verify the
theoretical analysis. Then, we demonstrate the chaotic behavior in such a
neuron with sinusoidal external input, via computer simulations. Finally, we
study the chaotic behaviors in tabu learning two-neuron models, with linear and
quadratic proximity functions respectively.Comment: 14 pages, 13 figures, Accepted by International Journal of

Hopf Bifurcation and Chaos in a Single Inertial Neuron Model with Time Delay
A delayed differential equation modelling a single neuron with inertial term
is considered in this paper. Hopf bifurcation is studied by using the normal
form theory of retarded functional differential equations. When adopting a
nonmonotonic activation function, chaotic behavior is observed. Phase plots,
waveform plots, and power spectra are presented to confirm the chaoticity.Comment: 12 pages, 7 figure
Mean-field equations for stochastic firing-rate neural fields with delays: Derivation and noise-induced transitions
In this manuscript we analyze the collective behavior of mean-field limits of
large-scale, spatially extended stochastic neuronal networks with delays.
Rigorously, the asymptotic regime of such systems is characterized by a very
intricate stochastic delayed integro-differential McKean-Vlasov equation that
remain impenetrable, leaving the stochastic collective dynamics of such
networks poorly understood. In order to study these macroscopic dynamics, we
analyze networks of firing-rate neurons, i.e. with linear intrinsic dynamics
and sigmoidal interactions. In that case, we prove that the solution of the
mean-field equation is Gaussian, hence characterized by its two first moments,
and that these two quantities satisfy a set of coupled delayed
integro-differential equations. These equations are similar to usual neural
field equations, and incorporate noise levels as a parameter, allowing analysis
of noise-induced transitions. We identify through bifurcation analysis several
qualitative transitions due to noise in the mean-field limit. In particular,
stabilization of spatially homogeneous solutions, synchronized oscillations,
bumps, chaotic dynamics, wave or bump splitting are exhibited and arise from
static or dynamic Turing-Hopf bifurcations. These surprising phenomena allow
further exploring the role of noise in the nervous system.Comment: Updated to the latest version published, and clarified the dependence

Dynamics of neural systems with discrete and distributed time delays
In real-world systems, interactions between elements do not happen instantaneously, due to the time
required for a signal to propagate, reaction times of individual elements, and so forth. Moreover,
time delays are normally nonconstant and may vary with time. This means that it is vital to introduce
time delays in any realistic model of neural networks. In order to analyze the fundamental
properties of neural networks with time-delayed connections, we consider a system of two coupled
two-dimensional nonlinear delay differential equations. This model represents a neural network,
where one subsystem receives a delayed input from another subsystem. An exciting feature of the
model under consideration is the combination of both discrete and distributed delays, where distributed
time delays represent the neural feedback between the two subsystems, and the discrete
delays describe the neural interaction within each of the two subsystems. Stability properties are
investigated for different commonly used distribution kernels, and the results are compared to the
corresponding results on stability for networks with no distributed delays. It is shown how approximations
of the boundary of the stability region of a trivial equilibrium can be obtained analytically
for the cases of delta, uniform, and weak gamma delay distributions. Numerical techniques are used
to investigate stability properties of the fully nonlinear system, and they fully confirm all analytical
findings
Complex oscillations in the delayed Fitzhugh-Nagumo equation
Motivated by the dynamics of neuronal responses, we analyze the dynamics of
the Fitzhugh-Nagumo slow-fast system with delayed self-coupling. This system
provides a canonical example of a canard explosion for sufficiently small
delays. Beyond this regime, delays significantly enrich the dynamics, leading
to mixed-mode oscillations, bursting and chaos. These behaviors emerge from a
delay-induced subcritical Bogdanov-Takens instability arising at the fold
points of the S-shaped critical manifold. Underlying the transition from
canard-induced to delay-induced dynamics is an abrupt switch in the nature of
the Hopf bifurcation
Dynamics of FitzHugh-Nagumo excitable systems with delayed coupling
Small lattices of nearest neighbor coupled excitable FitzHugh-Nagumo
systems, with time-delayed coupling are studied, and compared with systems of
FitzHugh-Nagumo oscillators with the same delayed coupling. Bifurcations of
equilibria in N=2 case are studied analytically, and it is then numerically
confirmed that the same bifurcations are relevant for the dynamics in the case
. Bifurcations found include inverse and direct Hopf and fold limit cycle
bifurcations. Typical dynamics for different small time-lags and coupling
intensities could be excitable with a single globally stable equilibrium,
asymptotic oscillatory with symmetric limit cycle, bi-stable with stable
equilibrium and a symmetric limit cycle, and again coherent oscillatory but
non-symmetric and phase-shifted. For an intermediate range of time-lags inverse
sub-critical Hopf and fold limit cycle bifurcations lead to the phenomenon of
oscillator death. The phenomenon does not occur in the case of FitzHugh-Nagumo
oscillators with the same type of coupling.Comment: accepted by Phys.Rev.
Stability and Hopf-Bifurcation Analysis of Delayed BAM Neural Network under Dynamic Thresholds
In this paper the dynamics of a three neuron model with self-connection and distributed delay under dynamical threshold is investigated. With the help of topological degree theory and Homotopy invariance principle existence and uniqueness of equilibrium point are established. The conditions for which the Hopf-bifurcation occurs at the equilibrium are obtained for the weak kernel of the distributed delay. The direction and stability of the bifurcating periodic solutions are determined by the normal form theory and central manifold theorem. Lastly global bifurcation aspect of such periodic solutions is studied. Some numerical simulations for justifying the theoretical analysis are also presented
