Some recent results in the analysis of greedy algorithms for assignment problems
We survey some recent developments in the analysis of greedy algorithms for assignment and transportation problems. We focus on the linear programming model for matroids and linear assignment problems with Monge property, on general linear programs, probabilistic analysis for linear assignment and makespan minimization, and on-line algorithms for linear and non-linear assignment problems
Sequential Randomized Algorithms for Convex Optimization in the Presence of Uncertainty
In this paper, we propose new sequential randomized algorithms for convex
optimization problems in the presence of uncertainty. A rigorous analysis of
the theoretical properties of the solutions obtained by these algorithms, for
full constraint satisfaction and partial constraint satisfaction, respectively,
is given. The proposed methods allow to enlarge the applicability of the
existing randomized methods to real-world applications involving a large number
of design variables. Since the proposed approach does not provide a priori
bounds on the sample complexity, extensive numerical simulations, dealing with
an application to hard-disk drive servo design, are provided. These simulations
testify the goodness of the proposed solution.Comment: 18 pages, Submitted for publication to IEEE Transactions on Automatic

New bounds for truthful scheduling on two unrelated selfish machines
We consider the minimum makespan problem for tasks and two unrelated
parallel selfish machines. Let be the best approximation ratio of
randomized monotone scale-free algorithms. This class contains the most
efficient algorithms known for truthful scheduling on two machines. We propose
a new formulation for , as well as upper and lower bounds on
based on this formulation. For the lower bound, we exploit pointwise
approximations of cumulative distribution functions (CDFs). For the upper
bound, we construct randomized algorithms using distributions with piecewise
rational CDFs. Our method improves upon the existing bounds on for small
. In particular, we obtain almost tight bounds for showing that

Algorithms to Approximate Column-Sparse Packing Problems
Column-sparse packing problems arise in several contexts in both
deterministic and stochastic discrete optimization. We present two unifying
ideas, (non-uniform) attenuation and multiple-chance algorithms, to obtain
improved approximation algorithms for some well-known families of such
problems. As three main examples, we attain the integrality gap, up to
lower-order terms, for known LP relaxations for k-column sparse packing integer
programs (Bansal et al., Theory of Computing, 2012) and stochastic k-set
packing (Bansal et al., Algorithmica, 2012), and go "half the remaining
distance" to optimal for a major integrality-gap conjecture of Furedi, Kahn and
Seymour on hypergraph matching (Combinatorica, 1993).Comment: Extended abstract appeared in SODA 2018. Full version in ACM
