    Genetic Algorithm Optimisation of PID Controllers for a Multivariable Process

    This project is about the design of PID controllers and the improvement of outputs in multivariable processes. The optimisation of PID controller for the Shell oil process is presented in this paper, using Genetic Algorithms (GAs). GAs are used to automatically tune PID controllers according to given specifications. They use an objective function, which is specially formulated and measures the performance of controller in terms of time-domain bounds on the responses of closed-loop process. A specific objective function is suggested that allows the designer for a single-input, single-output (SISO) process to explicitly specify the process performance specifications associated with the given problem in terms of time-domain bounds, then experimentally evaluate the closed-loop responses. This is investigated using a simple two-term parametric PID controller tuning problem. The results are then analysed and compared with those obtained using a number of popular conventional controller tuning methods. The intention is to demonstrate that the proposed objective function is inherently capable of accurately quantifying complex performance specifications in the time domain. This is something that cannot normally be employed in conventional controller design or tuning methods. Finally, the recommended objective function will be used to examine the control problems of Multi-Input-Multi-Output (MIMO) processes, and the results will be presented in order to determine the efficiency of the suggested control system

    Optimised configuration of sensors for fault tolerant control of an electro-magnetic suspension system

    For any given system the number and location of sensors can affect the closed-loop performance as well as the reliability of the system. Hence, one problem in control system design is the selection of the sensors in some optimum sense that considers both the system performance and reliability. Although some methods have been proposed that deal with some of the aforementioned aspects, in this work, a design framework dealing with both control and reliability aspects is presented. The proposed framework is able to identify the best sensor set for which optimum performance is achieved even under single or multiple sensor failures with minimum sensor redundancy. The proposed systematic framework combines linear quadratic Gaussian control, fault tolerant control and multiobjective optimisation. The efficacy of the proposed framework is shown via appropriate simulations on an electro-magnetic suspension system

    An application of the individual channel analysis and design approach to control of a two-input two-output coupled-tanks system

    Frequency-domain methods have provided an established approach to the analysis and design of single-loop feedback control systems in many application areas for many years. Individual Channel Analysis and Design (ICAD) is a more recent development that allows neo-classical frequency-domain analysis and design methods to be applied to multi-input multi-output control problems. This paper provides a case study illustrating the use of the ICAD methodology for an application involving liquid-level control for a system based on two coupled tanks. The complete nonlinear dynamic model of the plant is presented for a case involving two input flows of liquid and two output variables, which are the depths of liquid in the two tanks. Linear continuous proportional plus integral controllers are designed on the basis of linearised plant models to meet a given set of performance specifications for this two-input two-output multivariable control system and a computer simulation of the nonlinear model and the controllers is then used to demonstrate that the overall closed-loop performance meets the given requirements. The resulting system has been implemented in hardware and the paper includes experimental results which demonstrate good agreement with simulation predictions. The performance is satisfactory in terms of steady-state behaviour, transient responses, interaction between the controlled variables, disturbance rejection and robustness to changes within the plant. Further simulation results, some of which involve investigations that could not be carried out in a readily repeatable fashion by experimental testing, give support to the conclusion that this neo-classical ICAD framework can provide additional insight within the analysis and design processes for multi-input multi-output feedback control systems

    Modeling and supervisory control design for a combined cycle power plant

    The traditional control strategy based on PID controllers may be unsatisfactory when dealing with processes with large time delay and constraints. This paper presents a supervisory model based constrained predictive controller (MPC) for a combined cycle power plant (CCPP). First, a non-linear dynamic model of CCPP using the laws of physics was proposed. Then, the supervisory control using the linear constrained MPC method was designed to tune the performance of the PID controllers by including output constraints and manipulating the set points. This scheme showed excellent tracking and disturbance rejection results and improved performance compared with a stand-alone PID controller’s scheme

    Methods of system identification, parameter estimation and optimisation applied to problems of modelling and control in engineering and physiology

    Mathematical and computer-based models provide the foundation of most methods of engineering design. They are recognised as being especially important in the development of integrated dynamic systems, such as “control-configured” aircraft or in complex robotics applications. These models usually involve combinations of linear or nonlinear ordinary differential equations or difference equations, partial differential equations and algebraic equations. In some cases models may be based on differential algebraic equations. Dynamic models are also important in many other fields of research, including physiology where the highly integrated nature of biological control systems is starting to be more fully understood. Although many models may be developed using physical, chemical, or biological principles in the initial stages, the use of experimentation is important for checking the significance of underlying assumptions or simplifications and also for estimating appropriate sets of parameters. This experimental approach to modelling is also of central importance in establishing the suitability, or otherwise, of a given model for an intended application – the so-called “model validation” problem. System identification, which is the broad term used to describe the processes of experimental modelling, is generally considered to be a mature field and classical methods of identification involve linear discrete-time models within a stochastic framework. The aspects of the research described in this thesis that relate to applications of identification, parameter estimation and optimisation techniques for model development and model validation mainly involve nonlinear continuous time models Experimentally-based models of this kind have been used very successfully in the course of the research described in this thesis very in two areas of physiological research and in a number of different engineering applications. In terms of optimisation problems, the design, experimental tuning and performance evaluation of nonlinear control systems has much in common with the use of optimisation techniques within the model development process and it is therefore helpful to consider these two areas together. The work described in the thesis is strongly applications oriented. Many similarities have been found in applying modelling and control techniques to problems arising in fields that appear very different. For example, the areas of neurophysiology, respiratory gas exchange processes, electro-optic sensor systems, helicopter flight-control, hydro-electric power generation and surface ship or underwater vehicles appear to have little in common. However, closer examination shows that they have many similarities in terms of the types of problem that are presented, both in modelling and in system design. In addition to nonlinear behaviour; most models of these systems involve significant uncertainties or require important simplifications if the model is to be used in a real-time application such as automatic control. One recurring theme, that is important both in the modelling work described and for control applications, is the additional insight that can be gained through the dual use of time-domain and frequency-domain information. One example of this is the importance of coherence information in establishing the existence of linear or nonlinear relationships between variables and this has proved to be valuable in the experimental investigation of neuromuscular systems and in the identification of helicopter models from flight test data. Frequency-domain techniques have also proved useful for the reduction of high-order multi-input multi-output models. Another important theme that has appeared both within the modelling applications and in research on nonlinear control system design methods, relates to the problems of optimisation in cases where the associated response surface has many local optima. Finding the global optimum in practical applications presents major difficulties and much emphasis has been placed on evolutionary methods of optimisation (both genetic algorithms and genetic programming) in providing usable methods for optimisation in design and in complex nonlinear modelling applications that do not involve real-time problems. Another topic, considered both in the context of system modelling and control, is parameter sensitivity analysis and it has been found that insight gained from sensitivity information can be of value not only in the development of system models (e.g. through investigation of model robustness and the design of appropriate test inputs), but also in feedback system design and in controller tuning. A technique has been developed based on sensitivity analysis for the semi-automatic tuning of cascade and feedback controllers for multi-input multi-output feedback control systems. This tuning technique has been applied successfully to several problems. Inverse systems also receive significant attention in the thesis. These systems have provided a basis for theoretical research in the control systems field over the past two decades and some significant applications have been reported, despite the inherent difficulties in the mathematical methods needed for the nonlinear case. Inverse simulation methods, developed initially by others for use in handling-qualities studies for fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters, are shown in the thesis to provide some important potential benefits in control applications compared with classical methods of inversion. New developments in terms of methodology are presented in terms of a novel sensitivity based approach to inverse simulation that has advantages in terms of numerical accuracy and a new search-based optimisation technique based on the Nelder-Mead algorithm that can handle inverse simulation problems involving hard nonlinearities. Engineering applications of inverse simulation are presented, some of which involve helicopter flight control applications while others are concerned with feed-forward controllers for ship steering systems. The methods of search-based optimisation show some important advantages over conventional gradient-based methods, especially in cases where saturation and other nonlinearities are significant. The final discussion section takes the form of a critical evaluation of results obtained using the chosen methods of system identification, parameter estimation and optimisation for the modelling and control applications considered. Areas of success are highlighted and situations are identified where currently available techniques have important limitations. The benefits of an inter-disciplinary and applications-oriented approach to problems of modelling and control are also discussed and the value in terms of cross-fertilisation of ideas resulting from involvement in a wide range of applications is emphasised.     Genetic Algorithm for Decentralized PI Controller Tuning of a Multi-Span Web Transport System Based on Overlapping Decomposition

    The use of multi-span web transport systems often requires dedicating a particular effort for defining a control system able to protect the integrity of the web. In web handling processes there is a clear need for controlling web velocity and tension. As for any control problem, the best results are achieved when there is a clear understanding of the controlled process. Starting from a new mathematical model called Transfer Matrix Model for a more accurate description of a web transport system, an optimization study for identifying parameters of the PI controllers for a decentralized multiinput and multi-output system (MIMO) has been proposed. The possibility of using PI controllers for each section is attractive considering that an overlapping system decomposition may permit to take into account the mutual interaction of the neighbor sections reaching specified performance objectives. Finally, by using a nonlinear interpolation of the trend of a preliminary database of values obtained through genetic algorithm, a self-tuning strategy is proposed to estimate optimal PI parameters under certain conditions, avoiding the long identification process and making the system flexible and adaptive.     State estimation and trajectory tracking control for a nonlinear and multivariable bioethanol production system

    In this paper a controller is proposed based on linear algebra for a fed-batch bioethanol production process. It involves fnding feed rate profles (control actions obtained as a solution of a linear equations system) in order to make the system follow predefned concentration profles. A neural network states estimation is designed in order to know those variables that cannot be measured. The controller is tuned using a Monte Carlo experiment for which a cost function that penalizes tracking errors is defned. Moreover, several tests (adding parametric uncertainty and perturbations in the control action) are carried out so as to evaluate the controller performance.     Application of DCS for Level Control in Nonlinear System using Optimization and Robust Algorithms

    This proposed work deals with the real-time implementation of a PI level controller for a nonlinear interacting multi-input multi-output (MIMO) system using YOKOGAWA CENTUM CS 3000 DCS. Some intricate algorithms were chosen to tune the PI controller, presuming the effect of disturbances in a nonlinear interacting MIMO system. Three algorithms; a classical evolution algorithm, genetic algorithm (GA); a metaheuristic optimization algorithm, particle swarm optimization algorithm (PSO); and a robust algorithm, quantitative feedback theory (QFT) were chosen to tune thecontroller offline optimally. These controllers were then implemented in the process using distributed control systems (DCS), and the simulation results resulting from the three algorithms were compared with the experimental results. The impact of the tuning algorithms in the controller performance was studied in real-time
