Adding semantic annotations into (Geospatial) RESTful services
In this paper the authors present an approach for the semantic annotation of RESTful services in the geospatial
domain. Their approach automates some stages of the annotation process, by using a combination of resources
and services: a cross-domain knowledge base like DBpedia, two domain ontologies like GeoNames and the WGS84 vocabulary, and suggestion and synonym services. The authorsâ approach has been successfully evaluated with a set of geospatial RESTful services obtained from ProgrammableWeb.com, where geospatial services account for a third of the total amount of services available in this registry
Semantic Annotation of RESTful Services Using External Resources
Since the advent of Web 2.0, RESTful services have become an increasing phenomenon. Currently, Semantic Web technologies are being integrated into Web 2.0 services for both to leverage each other strengths. The need to take advantage of data available in RESTful services in the scope of Semantic Web evidences the difficulties to cope with syntactic and semantic description of the services. In this paper we present an approach to tackle the problem of automatic the semantic annotation of RESTful services using a cross-domain ontology, a semantic resource (DBpedia) and additional external resources (suggestion and synonyms services) to annotate the parameters of the RESTful services. We also present a preliminary evaluation that proves the feasibility of our approach and highlights that it is possible to carry out this semantic annotation with satisfactory results
Specification of high-level application programming interfaces (SemSorGrid4Env)
This document defines an Application Tier for the SemsorGrid4Env project. Within the Application Tier we distinguish between Web Applications - which provide a User Interface atop a more traditional Service Oriented Architecture - and Mashups which are driven by a REST API and a Resource Oriented Architecture. A pragmatic boundary is set to enable initial development of Web Applications and Mashups; as the project progresses an evaluation and comparison of the two paradigms may lead to a reassessment of where each can be applied within the project, with the experience gained providing a basis for general guidelines and best practice. Both Web Applications and Mashups are designed and delivered through an iterative user-centric process; requirements generated by the project case studies are a key element of this approach
Semantic Gateway as a Service architecture for IoT Interoperability
The Internet of Things (IoT) is set to occupy a substantial component of
future Internet. The IoT connects sensors and devices that record physical
observations to applications and services of the Internet. As a successor to
technologies such as RFID and Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN), the IoT has
stumbled into vertical silos of proprietary systems, providing little or no
interoperability with similar systems. As the IoT represents future state of
the Internet, an intelligent and scalable architecture is required to provide
connectivity between these silos, enabling discovery of physical sensors and
interpretation of messages between things. This paper proposes a gateway and
Semantic Web enabled IoT architecture to provide interoperability between
systems using established communication and data standards. The Semantic
Gateway as Service (SGS) allows translation between messaging protocols such as
XMPP, CoAP and MQTT via a multi-protocol proxy architecture. Utilization of
broadly accepted specifications such as W3C's Semantic Sensor Network (SSN)
ontology for semantic annotations of sensor data provide semantic
interoperability between messages and support semantic reasoning to obtain
higher-level actionable knowledge from low-level sensor data.Comment: 16 page
Integrating Spatial Data Linkage and Analysis Services in a Geoportal for China Urban Research
Many geoportals are now evolving into online analytical environments, where large amounts of data and various analysis methods are integrated. These spatiotemporal data are often distributed in different databases and exist in heterogeneous forms, even when they refer to the same geospatial entities. Besides, existing open standards lack sufficient expression of the attribute semantics. Client applications or other services thus have to deal with unrelated preprocessing tasks, such as data transformation and attribute annotation, leading to potential inconsistencies. Furthermore, to build informative interfaces that guide users to quickly understand the analysis methods, an analysis service needs to explicitly model the method parameters, which are often interrelated and have rich auxiliary information. This work presents the design of the spatial data linkage and analysis services in a geoportal for China urban research. The spatial data linkage service aggregates multisource heterogeneous data into linked layers with flexible attribute mapping, providing client applications and services with a unified access as if querying a big table. The spatial analysis service incorporates parameter hierarchy and grouping by extending the standard WPS service, and dataâdependent validation in computation components. This platform can help researchers efficiently explore and analyze spatiotemporal data online.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/110740/1/tgis12084.pd
Prikaz znanja u internetu stvari: semantiÄko modeliranje i njegove primjene
Semantic modelling provides a potential basis for interoperating among different systems and applications in the Internet of Things (IoT). However, current work has mostly focused on IoT resource management while not on the access and utilisation of information generated by the âThingsâ. We present the design of a comprehensive and lightweight semantic description model for knowledge representation in the IoT domain. The design follows the widely recognised best practices in knowledge engineering and ontology modelling. Users are allowed to extend the model by linking to external ontologies, knowledge bases or existing linked data. Scalable access to IoT services and resources is achieved through a distributed, semantic storage design. The usefulness of the model is also illustrated through an IoT service discovery method.SemantiÄko modeliranje pruĆŸa potencijalnu osnovu za me.udjelovanje razliÄitih sustava i aplikacija unutar interneta stvari (IoT). A Data Annotation Architecture for Semantic Applications in Virtualized Wireless Sensor Networks
Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) have become very popular and are being used
in many application domains (e.g. smart cities, security, gaming and
agriculture). Virtualized WSNs allow the same WSN to be shared by multiple
applications. Semantic applications are situation-aware and can potentially
play a critical role in virtualized WSNs. However, provisioning them in such
settings remains a challenge. The key reason is that semantic applications
provisioning mandates data annotation. Unfortunately it is no easy task to
annotate data collected in virtualized WSNs. This paper proposes a data
annotation architecture for semantic applications in virtualized heterogeneous
WSNs. The architecture uses overlays as the cornerstone, and we have built a
prototype in the cloud environment using Google App Engine. The early
performance measurements are also presented.Comment: This paper has been accepted for presentation in main technical
session of 14th IFIP/IEEE Symposium on Integrated Network and Service
Management (IM 2015) to be held on 11-15 May, 2015, Ottawa, Canad
A unified ontology-based data integration approach for the internet of things
Data integration enables combining data from various data sources in a standard format. Internet of things (IoT) applications use ontology approaches to provide a machine-understandable conceptualization of a domain. We propose a unified ontology schema approach to solve all IoT integration problems at once. The data unification layer maps data from different formats to data patterns based on the unified ontology model. This paper proposes a middleware consisting of an ontology-based approach that collects data from different devices. IoT middleware requires an additional semantic layer for cloud-based IoT platforms to build a schema for data generated from diverse sources. We tested the proposed model on real data consisting of approximately 160,000 readings from various sources in different formats like CSV, JSON, raw data, and XML. The data were collected through the file transfer protocol (FTP) and generated 960,000 resource description framework (RDF) triples. We evaluated the proposed approach by running different queries on different machines on SPARQL protocol and RDF query language (SPARQL) endpoints to check query processing time, validation of integration, and performance of the unified ontology model. The average response time for query execution on generated RDF triples on the three servers were approximately 0.144 seconds, 0.070 seconds, 0.062 seconds, respectively
