Lighthouse principle for diffusion in social networks
The article investigates an influence relation between two sets of agents in a social network. It proposes a logical system that captures propositional properties of this relation valid in all threshold models of social networks with the same structure. The logical system consists of Armstrong axioms for functional dependence and an additional Lighthouse axiom. The main results are soundness, completeness, and decidability theorems for this logical system
Marketing Impact on Diffusion in Social Networks
The paper proposes a way to add marketing into the standard threshold model
of social networks. Within this framework, the paper studies logical properties
of the influence relation between sets of agents in social networks. Two
different forms of this relation are considered: one for promotional marketing
and the other for preventive marketing. In each case a sound and complete
logical system describing properties of the influence relation is proposed.
Both systems could be viewed as extensions of Armstrong's axioms of functional
dependency from the database theory
Globalization and E-Commerce VI: Environment and Policy in Denmark
The diffusion of e-commerce in Denmark is mainly a result of a partnership between government and industry initiatives, rather than being purely market- or government-led. While environmental factors are important enablers of e-commerce diffusion, government policy aims to be a key driving force. Although the size of government is substantial and the list of policy instruments is extensive, there is a serious question about whether the governments\u27 efforts to stimulate use within the society (business, consumers, and government itself) are sufficient to stimulate diffusion of e-commerce adequately. Our analysis questions the effectiveness of the government-led approach because of its timing, its lack of coordinated actions, and the mixed motives of government actions, in particular at the European Community level. Our analysis also found serious structural barriers such as high marginal income taxation and a limited supply of qualified labor. Contributing to the limited labor supply are strict immigration policies and late entry into the labor market (college graduates enter the job market at the mean age of 29). Adding to the structural problems is the lack of large high-tech manufacturing companies that can function as locomotives, as well as an insufficient equity and venture funding market. The Danish national e-commerce strategy is focused on rapid adoption, implementation, and exploitation of e-commerce in all sectors of the economy, rather than a production-led strategy. The official goals of the Danish government are to make IT available to all citizens and to be among the top five IT-using nations in the world. Although our analysis points to a high level of diffusion of the technologies that, in principle could enable e-commerce, actual exploitation is lagging behind the lavish display of technology
Retranslating Virginia Woolf's To the Lighthouse in Modernist and Post-modernist Italy: A Corpus-based Study
A corpus-based analysis is employed to study the literary style's evolution in eleven Italian retranslations of Virginia Woolf's To the Lighthouse. The aim is to examine how and to what degree the literary movements have affected the target texts. During the twentieth century, increasing criticism, scepticism, and distance concerning the world's traditional vision and life were reflected in post-modernist literature, although in different ways across the European countries. New literary forms took place also in Italian literature. Woolf's novel's modernist features are a case in point to test Berman's Retranslation Hypothesis, which states that further retranslations tend to be text-source-oriented. This close-reading analysis partially confirms the proposed theory and indicates that the examined retranslations also remain relatively distant from the modernist and post-modernist experiments in Italy
Future directions in urban design as public policy: reassessing best practice principles for design review and development management
his paper reassesses John Punter's âBest Practice Principles for Design Review and Development Managementâ that were published in this journal in 2007. Placing a focused lens on British and North American practice, the paper argues that design control and review has been profoundly reshaped since 2007 by three contributing factors: the challenges associated with climate change, the growing role that communities can play in local decision making, and the impacts of the global economic crisis upon public sector finances and property development. In light of these trends, the paper uses a review of recent literature and design practices to argue for a series of amendments to the best practice principles. These focus on: (1) the potential for design control and review to be more fully informed by ecological design theory and practice; (2) the need for more rigorous multi-stakeholder collaboration in the design decision-making process; and (3) the opportunity for urban designers to become more competent âmarket actorsâ with the necessary abilities to confidently shape property development decisions
Search Engine Optimization
This Special Issue book focuses on the theory and practice of search engine optimization (SEO). It is intended for anyone who publishes content online and it includes five peer-reviewed papers from various researchers. More specifically, the book includes theoretical and case study contributions which review and synthesize important aspects, including, but not limited to, the following themes: theory of SEO, different types of SEO, SEO criteria evaluation, search engine algorithms, social media and SEO, and SEO applications in various industries, as well as SEO on media websites. The book aims to give a better understanding of the importance of SEO in the current state of the Internet and online information search. Even though SEO is widely used by marketing practitioners, there is a relatively small amount of academic research that systematically attempts to capture this phenomenon and its impact across different industries. Thus, this collection of studies offers useful insights, as well as a valuable resource that intends to open the door for future SEO-related research
