    The evolution of world inequality in well-being.

    Get PDF
    In this paper we investigate the evolution of the inequality in well-being across different countries between 1975 and 2000. We treat well-being as a multidimensional concept focusing on three important dimensions of life: standard of living, health and education. Inequality in the three dimensions shows a different trend between 1975 and 2000. We propose a flexible measure of well-being and use the tools offered by the recent literature on multidimensional inequality measurement to quantify the evolution of overall intercountry well-being inequality. The empirical results are nuanced, and sensitive to different normative choices on the trade-offs between the different dimensions. In particular the concave transformation of income turns out to be decisive for the evolution of world inequality in well-being.Belgium; Effects; Income taxes; Personal; World;

    A Spatial Analysis Of The Knowledge - Based Economy In Poland

    Get PDF
    The purpose of this article is to identify disparities in the use of knowledge in socio-economic life in the Polish provinces. The study was conducted using a taxonomic measure of development (one of the tools of multidimensional comparative analysis). Classification of provinces was constructed on the basis of KEI (Knowledge Economy Index) and KI (Knowledge Index) which are used by the World Bank in Knowledge Assessment Methodology (KAM). The division into four pillars (i.e. The Economic Incentive and Institutional Regime, The Innovation System, Education and Human Resources, Information and Communication Technology) attempts to explain the relationship between the factors of development

    Building a Better World: An Ecosystemic Approach to Education, Culture, Health, Environment and Quality of Life

    Quality of life, natural and man-made environments, physical, social and mental well-being are currently undermined by all sorts of hazards and injuries; political, economical, social and cultural disarray normalise atrocious behaviours and violence throughout the world. Considering the multiple problems of difficult settlement or solution in our times, current environmental, social, cultural, educational, political and economic policies and practices are examined in view of new paradigms of growth, power, wealth, work and freedom. A multidimensional ecosystemic approach and planning model integrate into a dynamic configuration four dimensions of being-in-the- world (intimate, interactive, social and biophysical), as they induce the events (deficits and assets), cope with consequences (desired or undesired) and reorganise for change.education; culture; public policies; environment; ecosystems

    The changes that occur in Ukraine and the world require a substantial reform of the education system, which should provide each student real-world conditions for intellectual, spiritual and physical development and improvement of cultural and professional level that corresponds to the best world standards and to provide the future specialists in various industries sports and health-improving competences necessary for the further life [1; 2]. While the educational process is a multidimensional sphere, where the interaction between student and teacher is a priority in the teaching activities [3; 4]

    Fast training of self organizing maps for the visual exploration of molecular compounds

    Visual exploration of scientific data in life science area is a growing research field due to the large amount of available data. The Kohonen’s Self Organizing Map (SOM) is a widely used tool for visualization of multidimensional data. In this paper we present a fast learning algorithm for SOMs that uses a simulated annealing method to adapt the learning parameters. The algorithm has been adopted in a data analysis framework for the generation of similarity maps. Such maps provide an effective tool for the visual exploration of large and multi-dimensional input spaces. The approach has been applied to data generated during the High Throughput Screening of molecular compounds; the generated maps allow a visual exploration of molecules with similar topological properties. The experimental analysis on real world data from the National Cancer Institute shows the speed up of the proposed SOM training process in comparison to a traditional approach. The resulting visual landscape groups molecules with similar chemical properties in densely connected regions

    Paediatric non-alcoholic fatty liver disease: impact on patients and mothers' quality of life

    Background: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is one of the causes of fatty liver in adults and is currently the primary form of chronic liver disease in children and adolescents. However, the psychological outcome (i.e. the behavioural problems that can in turn be related to psychiatric conditions, like anxiety and mood disorders, or lower quality of life) in children and adolescents suffering of NAFLD has not been extensively explored in the literature. Objectives: The present study aims at evaluating the emotional and behavioural profile in children suffering from NAFLD and the quality of life in their mothers. Patients and Methods: A total of 57 children (18 females/39 males) with NAFLD were compared to 39 age-matched control children (25 females/14 males). All participants were submitted to the following psychological tools to assess behavior, mood, and anxiety: the Multidimensional Anxiety Scale for Children (MASC), the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL), and the Children's Depression Inventory (CDI). Moreover, the mothers of 40 NAFLD and 39 control children completed the World Health Organization Quality of Life-BREF (WHOQOL-BREF) questionnaire. Results: NAFLD children scored significantly higher as compared to control children in MASC (P = 0.001) and CDI total (P < 0.001) scales. The CBCL also revealed significantly higher scores for NAFLD children in total problems (P = 0.046), internalizing symptoms (P = 0.000) and somatic complaints (P < 0.001). The WHOQOL-BREF revealed significantly lower scores for the mothers of NAFLD children in the overall perception of the quality of life (P < 0.001), and in the "relationships" domain (P = 0.023). Conclusions: Increased emotional and behavioural problems were detected in children with NAFLD as compared to healthy control children, together with an overall decrease in their mothers' quality of life. These results support the idea that these patients may benefit from a psychological intervention, ideally involving both children and parents, whose quality of life is likely negatively affected by this disease

    How Differs Outsourcing of Core and Supportive Activities in Slovenian SMEs

    Companies are facing increasing and faster changes on the market, including globalization, shortening of life cycles, complexity of products, intensive technological development. Achieving and maintaining competitiveness can be done with different strategies and tools. One of them is also outsourcing. Outsourcing is widespread throughout the world and represents a commonly accepted business practice. An important feature of outsourcing is that it is determined by several characteristics at the same time. Since outsourcing is a multidimensional phenomenon, we examined it’s most important and distinctive dimensions, including share of outsourcing particular activity, duration of the outsourcing contract, and number, size and location of outsourcing providers. For the purpose of research we have examined which activities are companies outsourcing and divide them on core and supportive activities. On this ground we studied differences in particular characteristics between those two groups of activities. The paper is based on empirical study of 154 Slovenian SMEs concluded in 2008. Its findings are presented in the paper.outsourcing, activities, dimensions, SMEs

    This paper aims to examine the Covid-19 phenomenon and its multidimensional impacts on the form of disruption of social life and efforts to overcome it. At the end of 2019, the city of Wuhan had a new pneumonia outbreak and spread to 190 countries. The outbreak was named Corona Virus Disease 2019 (Covid-19). The Covid-19 pandemic has spread throughout the world and has claimed millions of victims, which until now have not been found a vaccine to treat it. The development of Covid-19 has had a multidimensional impact causing a decline in health, welfare, economic growth, anomies and disruption in various lives. Various strategies and policies have been taken by governments around the world in the form of the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), social distancing, and reducing crowds involving large crowds, new normal and various life revolutions so that people are able to sustain their lives and reduce the new Covid-19 cluster. Until now, the efforts taken by various countries including in the medical field, namely finding a new vaccine, but it have not been successful to be found. So the Covid-19 pandemic has caused a revolution and disruption in various aspects of the social-cultural, health and economy. Keywords: Personal protective equipment; PPE; covid-19; social-cultura
