Libraries and librarianship in the Republic of Macedonia
Libraries and librarianship in the Republic of Macedonia have a
tradition spanning centuries, one that is linked to the work of Saint
Clement of Ohrid and the first Slavic university in the monasteries
on the banks of Lake Ohrid. Libraries and librarianship are the
fountain springs of Macedonian culture but also the foundation of
its ongoing mission. Libraries in Macedonia are following new trends
and tendencies in their efforts to build a national library-information
system, with shared cataloging as part of the regional library network
(COBISS.net). Building on the continuous application of the traditional
types of preservation of library materials along with contemporary
methods and technologies, current practice has expanded to
include digitalization. This has ensured easy online access to Macedonia’s
rich library holdings, offered opportunities for its written cultural
heritage to be presented in both digital and traditional formats,
and opened up new paths for greater international cooperation.published or submitted for publicatio
Searching for a lost identity: Serbian librarianship at the beginning of the twenty-first century
There are three related aspects of the problem of identity that beset
Serbian librarianship after 1991: 1) identity as survival during the
war crisis and subsequent sanctions; 2) identity as change during the
time of a global information and communication revolution; and
3) identity as self-awareness during a time of change in status, social
responsibility, and professionalism for library personnel. Judging by
the difference in the conditions under which libraries operated in
Serbia during the 1990s and 2000s, the two decades can be characterized
as the antipodes of each other. At the same time, they are also
two sides of the same whole, in that the old system of librarianship
collapsed and has not yet been replaced with a new one. This paper
offers a survey of the situation in Serbia through an analysis of the
present state of the difficulties currently besetting the various activities
of Serbian libraries: automation, digitization, communication,
scientific research, and continuing education. The need to develop
a new discourse on librarianship in Serbia is crucial so that librarians
may have a voice in the processes of formal and public education
and the acceleration of economic, scientific, and cultural growth
in Serbia.published or submitted for publicatio
The evolving role of the school library and information centre in education in digital Europe.
The purpose of the research is to study the evolving role of the school library and information centre (SLIC) in primary and secondary education in digital Europe, not
only in countries where schools have reached an advanced stage of usage of digital technology in education, but also in less advanced schools. This international research
provides a bridge between two different disciplines – Comparative Education (Sociology) and Library and Information Science (LIS) – and attempts to provide
information to both the educational and library communities throughout Europe regarding the role which SLICs play in the emerging educational global landscape and to determine whether or not these traditional, digital or virtual SLICs, and the work of the school librarian and information specialist, influence the quality of education and improve children’s learning outcomes at different levels.
First of all, the study examines a sub-matrix known as the KILM (Kalsbeek Information Literacy Matrix), which was developed as part of an educational matrix between 1997 and 2008 at the Kalsbeek College in Woerden, the Netherlands. The educational matrix attempts to introduce and implement educational reforms, ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) usage, educational technology and new forms of learning throughout the school in a orderly fashion while maintaining a high level of educational quality. This sub-matrix (KILM) identifies the role of the SLIC during the application of the educational matrix.
The study then looks at success criteria which became apparent during the application of the sub-matrix and asks whether or not it would be possible to apply similar strategies to other schools libraries and information centres, firstly at Dutch national level and then in school libraries throughout Europe. The staffing, facilities
and conditions in school libraries and information centres which were studied vary greatly, however, thanks to the willingness of teachers, school librarians and (school)
library associations to share information and data, it has become possible to identify common problems and present some solutions
Have Library Symbols Been Changed by Cultural Differences? A Comparative Study of the Example of the Logos of Libraries
Pierwotna wersja arykułu została wygłoszona w formie referatu podczas: 5th International Conference on Qualitative and Quantitative Methods in Libraries 4 - 7 June 2013, "La Sapienza" University, Rome Italy. Artykuł złożono do druku u organizatora konferencji. This article analyses some visual artifacts which are using by libraries. Due to the spaciousness of the topic they focused on two of the main and popular artifacts: the watchwords and the logos of libraries from two cultural areas, the first area of several countries connected with Muslim culture and being under the influence of such traditions. Among described institutions are libraries from e.g. Turkey, Kuwait, and Kazakhstan. Second area are countries that belonged to the Soviet sector of domination, such as Poland, Lithuania, Croatia, Russia and Ukraine. The mentioned countries are entirely different from historical, cultural and the political point of view. But now all of them are similar in common questions/developments: dynamic building or rebuilding economical consequence. One of the important instruments to gain this is good marketing the marketing of cultural artifacts including libraries and/or other information centers. This instrument shows a long and rich history and tradition in those countries. Comparing and finding some parallel points among these countries related to marketing and the socialization of information are main aims of this speech. In this work watchwords and logos of libraries will be explained and mentioned to compare information services, marketing library services and planning them, and will also mention the cultural differences of marketing library services among two separate cultures. Authors of this study used two scientific approaches: semiotics and diachronic method
In “No man’s land”: Libraries in post-Dayton Bosnia and Herzegovina
This paper presents the complex situation that libraries in Bosnia
and Herzegovina face and suggests possible avenues for improvement.
After brief coverage of the history of libraries in the country
from the Middle Ages to the communist period, the paper focuses
on the devastation that occurred during the war that took place in
Bosnia and Herzegovina between 1992 and 1995, which was formally
brought to an end by the Dayton Peace Agreement. The problems
that libraries have faced in the current period of peace cannot be
understood without reference to this episode of the war. The most
difficult problems they face today are the lack of adequate legislation,
the politicization of library activities, and the war devastation.
In addition, at the beginning of 2014, the library and information
system of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which is based on a computer
program for cooperative cataloging, was split into two parts. The
fragmentation of contemporary Bosnian and Herzegovinian society
is evidenced by the damage and division that politics has managed
to effect, which the war did not.published or submitted for publicatio
Overview: The Role of Information Policy in Resolving Global Challenges
Governments in many countries recognize the importance of knowledge-based societies whose citizens are adaptable and have the means to engage in continuous learning. Information societies can address global challenges far more readily than those that do not adopt its characteristics of ICTs (information and communication technologies) and connectivity; usable content; infrastructure and deliverability; and human intellectual capability
The development of the notion of libraries in the ancient world with special reference to the Middle East, the Roman Republic and the Royal Alexandrian Library
Bibliography: leaves 252-256.The Royal Alexandrian Library (RAL) is considered by modern scholarship to represent the epitome of the development of ancient librarianship. Its extensive holdings imply the application of modern organizational procedures such as collection development, information retrieval and promotion of use - terms identifiable as elements embodied in the conceptual framework of librarianship (for the purposes of this study the latter two concepts - information retrieval and promotion of use - are combined into the simplified general concept of "collection accessibility"). The RAL therefore constitutes a key development phase in the evolution of modern librarianship. However, scholars have disputed the origins of the RAL and Mouseion or university it was attached to. The socalled "Greek thesis" emphasizes the purely Greek origins of both the Mouseion and the RAL. Conversely, the "Ptolemaic thesis", while acknowledging the Greek origins of the Mouseion, argues that the RAL (as an independent institution distinguishable from the Mouseion proper) is derived from Middle Eastern institutions. This study traces the origins of the RAL from the textual collections of the early Mediterranean and Middle Eastern civilizations, through the period of Greek and the subsequent Hellenistic cultural dominance - culminating in the legacy of Hellenistic librarianship as inherited by the Roman Republic, since the newly emerging Roman empire was to exert a deciding influence upon the historical development of the RAL. Within these civilizations and regions a brief overview is undertaken to gauge the extent of literacy and literary output prevalent in each as well as a general assessment of librarianship and library practices. The major and most noteworthy archival and book collections are then analysed according to the organizational procedures identified in the outlined conceptual framework of librarianship. For this purpose sufficient information has been obtained from archaeological evidence and primary and secondary sources to allow for the analysis of forty-three libraries throughout the ancient world. In this way predominantly Middle Eastern as well as Greek elements have been identified as contributing to the creation, organization and functioning of the RAL
