Social conduct, learning and innovation: an abductive study of the dark side of agile software development

Agile methodologies have been adopted by an increasing number of organizations to improve their responsiveness. However, few studies have empirically analysed the effect of Agile on long-term organizational goals such as learning and innovation. Using an abductive approach, this study examines the relationships between self-regulated teams’ social conduct and their resulting learning and innovation. Results indicate that the perceived time pressure to get the job done greatly impedes team engagement in learning and innovation activities. Time pressure is affected by the various control strategies deriving from the implementation of Agile, which constitute its dark side: concertive, belief, diagnostic and boundary controls

Adaptive Classroom Project Management: Facilitating Collaborative Science Inquiry with Scrum

New standards such as NGSS require science teachers to shift the focus of classroom teaching to making sense of phenomena and designing solutions to problems, engaging in three dimensional learning, and developing 21st century skills such as problem solving, critical thinking, communication, collaboration and self-management. To achieve these goals, novel teaching and instructional management methods will be required to meet these new dynamic requirements. With the variety of challenges faced in the classroom, novice teachers stand to benefit from a management strategy to guide and organize their leadership efforts. This study is an autoethnographic reflection of how a pre-service science teacher utilized Scrum, an Agile Project Management delivery framework, to implement a collaborative project-based learning (PBL) inquiry science curriculum unit. Scrum roles, processes, and artifacts were incorporated into the PBL global climate change curriculum design and management strategies of the student intern. Researcher observations of variables in the learning environment that contributed to student collaboration were analyzed for patterns of significance. Scrum management had a significant impact on curriculum design and group communication which contributed to building a classroom community and creating a learning environment of positive educational outcomes and adaptability. The Scrum educational environment supported social learning, creativity, accessibility, engagement, and collaboration. These positive outcomes were the result of purposeful group management and sustained inquiry learning. Adaptive classroom project management based on components of Scrum was an effective method for a pre-service science teacher to facilitate student collaboration and a student-centered learning environment

This open access book constitutes the proceedings of the 21st International Conference on Agile Software Development, XP 2020, which was planned to be held during June 8-12, 2020, at the IT University of Copenhagen, Denmark. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic the conference was postponed until an undetermined date. XP is the premier agile software development conference combining research and practice. It is a hybrid forum where agile researchers, academics, practitioners, thought leaders, coaches, and trainers get together to present and discuss their most recent innovations, research results, experiences, concerns, challenges, and trends. Following this history, for both researchers and seasoned practitioners XP 2020 provided an informal environment to network, share, and discover trends in Agile for the next 20 years. The 14 full and 2 short papers presented in this volume were carefully reviewed and selected from 37 submissions. They were organized in topical sections named: agile adoption; agile practices; large-scale agile; the business of agile; and agile and testing

IS2020 A Competency Model for Undergraduate Programs in Information Systems: The Joint ACM/AIS IS2020 Task Force

    Get PDF
The IS2020 report is the latest in a series of model curricula recommendations and guidelines for undergraduate degrees in Information Systems (IS). The report builds on the foundations developed in previous model curricula reports to develop a major revision of the model curriculum with the inclusion of significant new characteristics. Specifically, the IS2020 report does not directly prescribe a degree structure that targets a specific context or environment. Rather, the IS2020 report provides guidance regarding the core content of the curriculum that should be present but also provides flexibility to customize curricula according to local institutional needs

Governance of innovation project management : necessary and neglected

The study is motivated by the aspiration to understand project governance in organizations pursuing the development of new products and services across multiple knowledge worker teams. In particular, the following problem statement guides the study: Is governance of innovation project management necessary or neglected? Taking the example of agile teams, I illustrate how the advancements in team based project management approaches force us to rethink governance of innovation project management. The findings are based on eight studies. The data consists of results from a total of 53 knowledge worker teams across 44 organizations in 8 countries. The two main conclusions drawn from this study are: (1) fundamentally different approaches to governance of innovation projects are a prerequisite for a success of projects developing new products and services, and (2) governance, particularly in heavily top-down influenced fields such as public administration, will benefit from advancements in agile project management methods. This research project has been supported by the Living Lab The Hague project co-funded with support from the European Regional Development Fund of the European Union.Algorithms and the Foundations of Software technolog
