Sharing software engineering resources and open source software across entities
This paper describes a number of âgood ideasâ designed to assist staff who are involved in the management, delivery or support of student project work. The ideas were formed from a Disciplinary Commons. The good ideas discussed include online forums, a project repository, alternative project structures, project preparation, progress reviews, instant supervision, peer support and anti-cheating mechanisms. Readers are encouraged to dip in, consider the ideas and implement those of most use for their own institutions

The Review drew upon Becta's surveys of schools and FE colleges as well as other research to assess the impact of technology within the education system and the progress made in achieving Government policies in 2005-06
The cathedral and the bazaar of e-repository development: encouraging community engagement with moving pictures and sound
This paper offers an insight into the development, use and governance of eârepositories for learning and teaching, illustrated by Eric Raymond's bazaar and cathedral analogies and by a comparison of collection strategies that focus on content coverage or on the needs of users. It addresses in particular the processes that encourage and achieve community engagement. This insight is illustrated by one particular eârepository, the Education Media OnâLine (EMOL) service. This paper draws analogies between the bazaar approach for open source software development and its possibilities for developing eârepositories for learning and teaching. It suggests in particular that the development, use and evaluation of online moving pictures and sound objects for learning and teaching can benefit greatly from the community engagement lessons provided by the development, use and evaluation of open source software. Such lessons can be underpinned by experience in the area of learning resource collections, where repositories have been classified as âcollectionsâbasedâ or âuserâbasedâ. Lessons from the open source movement may inform the development of eârepositories such as EMOL in the future
Nmag micromagnetic simulation tool - software engineering lessons learned
We review design and development decisions and their impact for the open
source code Nmag from a software engineering in computational science point of
view. We summarise lessons learned and recommendations for future computational
science projects. Key lessons include that encapsulating the simulation
functionality in a library of a general purpose language, here Python, provides
great flexibility in using the software. The choice of Python for the top-level
user interface was very well received by users from the science and engineering
community. The from-source installation in which required external libraries
and dependencies are compiled from a tarball was remarkably robust. In places,
the code is a lot more ambitious than necessary, which introduces unnecessary
complexity and reduces main- tainability. Tests distributed with the package
are useful, although more unit tests and continuous integration would have been
desirable. The detailed documentation, together with a tutorial for the usage

ARDUINO Tutor: An Intelligent Tutoring System for Training on ARDUINO
This paper aims at helping trainees to overcome the difficulties they face when dealing with Arduino platform by describing the design of a desktop based intelligent tutoring system. The main idea of this system is a systematic introduction into the concept of Arduino platform. The system shows the circuit boards of Arduino that can be purchased at low cost or assembled from freely-available plans; and an open-source development environment and library for writing code to control the board topic of Arduino platform.
The system is adaptive with the traineeâs individual progress. The system functions as a special tutor who deals with trainees according to their levels and skills. Evaluation of the system has been applied on professional and unprofessional trainees in this field and the results were good
