Second Moment Method on k-SAT: a General Framework
We give a general framework implementing the Second Moment Method on k-SAT
and discuss the conditions making the Second Moment Method work in this
framework. As applications, we make the Second Moment Method work on boolean
solutions and implicants. We extend this to the distributional model of k-SAT.Comment: 35 page
Trading inference effort versus size in CNF Knowledge Compilation
Knowledge Compilation (KC) studies compilation of boolean functions f into
some formalism F, which allows to answer all queries of a certain kind in
polynomial time. Due to its relevance for SAT solving, we concentrate on the
query type "clausal entailment" (CE), i.e., whether a clause C follows from f
or not, and we consider subclasses of CNF, i.e., clause-sets F with special
properties. In this report we do not allow auxiliary variables (except of the
Outlook), and thus F needs to be equivalent to f.
We consider the hierarchies UC_k <= WC_k, which were introduced by the
authors in 2012. Each level allows CE queries. The first two levels are
well-known classes for KC. Namely UC_0 = WC_0 is the same as PI as studied in
KC, that is, f is represented by the set of all prime implicates, while UC_1 =
WC_1 is the same as UC, the class of unit-refutation complete clause-sets
introduced by del Val 1994. We show that for each k there are (sequences of)
boolean functions with polysize representations in UC_{k+1}, but with an
exponential lower bound on representations in WC_k. Such a separation was
previously only know for k=0. We also consider PC < UC, the class of
propagation-complete clause-sets. We show that there are (sequences of) boolean
functions with polysize representations in UC, while there is an exponential
lower bound for representations in PC. These separations are steps towards a
general conjecture determining the representation power of the hierarchies PC_k
< UC_k <= WC_k. The strong form of this conjecture also allows auxiliary

Anytime Algorithms for ROBDD Symmetry Detection and Approximation
Reduced Ordered Binary Decision Diagrams (ROBDDs) provide a dense and memory efficient representation of Boolean functions. When ROBDDs are applied in logic synthesis, the problem arises of detecting both classical and generalised symmetries. State-of-the-art in symmetry detection is represented by Mishchenko's algorithm. Mishchenko showed how to detect symmetries in ROBDDs without the need for checking equivalence of all co-factor pairs. This work resulted in a practical algorithm for detecting all classical symmetries in an ROBDD in O(|G|3) set operations where |G| is the number of nodes in the ROBDD. Mishchenko and his colleagues subsequently extended the algorithm to find generalised symmetries. The extended algorithm retains the same asymptotic complexity for each type of generalised symmetry. Both the classical and generalised symmetry detection algorithms are monolithic in the sense that they only return a meaningful answer when they are left to run to completion. In this thesis we present efficient anytime algorithms for detecting both classical and generalised symmetries, that output pairs of symmetric variables until a prescribed time bound is exceeded. These anytime algorithms are complete in that given sufficient time they are guaranteed to find all symmetric pairs. Theoretically these algorithms reside in O(n3+n|G|+|G|3) and O(n3+n2|G|+|G|3) respectively, where n is the number of variables, so that in practice the advantage of anytime generality is not gained at the expense of efficiency. In fact, the anytime approach requires only very modest data structure support and offers unique opportunities for optimisation so the resulting algorithms are very efficient. The thesis continues by considering another class of anytime algorithms for ROBDDs that is motivated by the dearth of work on approximating ROBDDs. The need for approximation arises because many ROBDD operations result in an ROBDD whose size is quadratic in the size of the inputs. Furthermore, if ROBDDs are used in abstract interpretation, the running time of the analysis is related not only to the complexity of the individual ROBDD operations but also the number of operations applied. The number of operations is, in turn, constrained by the number of times a Boolean function can be weakened before stability is achieved. This thesis proposes a widening that can be used to both constrain the size of an ROBDD and also ensure that the number of times that it is weakened is bounded by some given constant. The widening can be used to either systematically approximate an ROBDD from above (i.e. derive a weaker function) or below (i.e. infer a stronger function). The thesis also considers how randomised techniques may be deployed to improve the speed of computing an approximation by avoiding potentially expensive ROBDD manipulation

Generating functions and the satisfiability threshold
International audienceThe 3-SAT problem consists in determining if a boolean formula with 3 literals per clause is satisfiable. When the ratio between the number of clauses and the number of variables increases, a threshold phenomenon is observed: the probability of satisfiability appears to decrease sharply from 1 to 0 in the neighbourghood of a threshold value, conjectured to be close to 4.25. Although the threshold has been proved to exist for the 2-SAT formulƦ and for closely related problems like 3-XORSAT, there is still no proof for the 3-sat problem. Recent works have provided so far upper and lower bounds for the threshold's potential location. We present here a unified approach to upper bounds that is based on urn models, generating functions, and saddle-point bounds. In this way, we re-derive some of the most significant upper bounds known in a simple and uniform manner
Logic-Based Explainability in Machine Learning
The last decade witnessed an ever-increasing stream of successes in Machine
Learning (ML). These successes offer clear evidence that ML is bound to become
pervasive in a wide range of practical uses, including many that directly
affect humans. Unfortunately, the operation of the most successful ML models is
incomprehensible for human decision makers. As a result, the use of ML models,
especially in high-risk and safety-critical settings is not without concern. In
recent years, there have been efforts on devising approaches for explaining ML
models. Most of these efforts have focused on so-called model-agnostic
approaches. However, all model-agnostic and related approaches offer no
guarantees of rigor, hence being referred to as non-formal. For example, such
non-formal explanations can be consistent with different predictions, which
renders them useless in practice. This paper overviews the ongoing research
efforts on computing rigorous model-based explanations of ML models; these
being referred to as formal explanations. These efforts encompass a variety of
topics, that include the actual definitions of explanations, the
characterization of the complexity of computing explanations, the currently
best logical encodings for reasoning about different ML models, and also how to
make explanations interpretable for human decision makers, among others
