    Computers may help us to better understand (not just verify) arguments. In this article we defend this claim by showcasing the application of a new, computer-assisted interpretive method to an exemplary natural-language ar- gument with strong ties to metaphysics and religion: E. J. Lowe’s modern variant of St. Anselm’s ontological argument for the existence of God. Our new method, which we call computational hermeneutics, has been particularly conceived for use in interactive-automated proof assistants. It aims at shedding light on the meanings of words and sentences by framing their inferential role in a given argument. By employing automated theorem reasoning technology within interactive proof assistants, we are able to drastically reduce (by several orders of magnitude) the time needed to test the logical validity of an argu- ment’s formalization. As a result, a new approach to logical analysis, inspired by Donald Davidson’s account of radical interpretation, has been enabled. In computational hermeneutics, the utilization of automated reasoning tools ef- fectively boosts our capacity to expose the assumptions we indirectly commit ourselves to every time we engage in rational argumentation and it fosters the explicitation and revision of our concepts and commitments

    AbstractA semantic network is a graph of the structure of meaning. This article introduces semantic network systems and their importance in Artificial Intelligence, followed by I. the early background; II. a summary of the basic ideas and issues including link types, frame systems, case relations, link valence, abstraction, inheritance hierarchies and logic extensions; and III. a survey of ‘world-structuring’ systems including ontologies, causal link models, continuous models, relevance, formal dictionaries, semantic primitives and intersecting inference hierarchies. Speed and practical implementation are briefly discussed. The conclusion argues for a synthesis of relational graph theory, graph-grammar theory and order theory based on semantic primitives and multiple intersecting inference hierarchies

    Argumentation models and their use in corpus annotation: practice, prospects, and challenges

    The study of argumentation is transversal to several research domains, from philosophy to linguistics, from the law to computer science and artificial intelligence. In discourse analysis, several distinct models have been proposed to harness argumentation, each with a different focus or aim. To analyze the use of argumentation in natural language, several corpora annotation efforts have been carried out, with a more or less explicit grounding on one of such theoretical argumentation models. In fact, given the recent growing interest in argument mining applications, argument-annotated corpora are crucial to train machine learning models in a supervised way. However, the proliferation of such corpora has led to a wide disparity in the granularity of the argument annotations employed. In this paper, we review the most relevant theoretical argumentation models, after which we survey argument annotation projects closely following those theoretical models. We also highlight the main simplifications that are often introduced in practice. Furthermore, we glimpse other annotation efforts that are not so theoretically grounded but instead follow a shallower approach. It turns out that most argument annotation projects make their own assumptions and simplifications, both in terms of the textual genre they focus on and in terms of adapting the adopted theoretical argumentation model for their own agenda. Issues of compatibility among argument-annotated corpora are discussed by looking at the problem from a syntactical, semantic, and practical perspective. Finally, we discuss current and prospective applications of models that take advantage of argument-annotated corpora

    Alternate Means of Digital Design Communication

    This thesis reconceptualises communication in digital design as an integrated social and technical process. The friction in the communicative processes pertaining to digital design can be traced to the fact that current research and practice emphasise technical concerns at the expense of social aspects of design communication. With the advent of BIM (Building Information Modelling), a code model of communication (machine-to-machine) is inadequately applied to design communication. This imbalance is addressed in this thesis by using inferential models of communication to capture and frame the psychological and social aspects behind the communicative contracts between people. Three critical aspects of the communicative act have been analysed, namely (1) data representation, (2) data classification and (3) data transaction, with the help of a new digital design communication platform, Speckle, which was developed during this research project for this purpose. By virtue of an applied living laboratory context, Speckle facilitated both qualitative and quantitative comparisons against existing methodologies with data from real-world settings. Regarding data representation (1), this research finds that the communicative performance of a low-level composable object model is better than that of a complete and universal one as it enables a more dynamic process of ontological revision. This implies that current practice and research operates at an inappropriate level of abstraction. On data classification (2), this thesis shows that a curatorial object-based data sharing methodology, as opposed to the current file-based approaches, leads to increased relevancy and a reduction in noise (information without intent, or meaning). Finally, on data transaction (3), the analysis shows that an object-based data sharing methodology is technically better suited to enable communicative contracts between stakeholders. It allows for faster and more meaningful change-dependent transactions, as well as allow for the emergence of traceable communicative networks outside of the predefined exchanges of current practices
