    Content-Based Book Recommending Using Learning for Text Categorization

    Recommender systems improve access to relevant products and information by making personalized suggestions based on previous examples of a user's likes and dislikes. Most existing recommender systems use social filtering methods that base recommendations on other users' preferences. By contrast, content-based methods use information about an item itself to make suggestions. This approach has the advantage of being able to recommended previously unrated items to users with unique interests and to provide explanations for its recommendations. We describe a content-based book recommending system that utilizes information extraction and a machine-learning algorithm for text categorization.     Discovering the Impact of Knowledge in Recommender Systems: A Comparative Study

    Recommender systems engage user profiles and appropriate filtering techniques to assist users in finding more relevant information over the large volume of information. User profiles play an important role in the success of recommendation process since they model and represent the actual user needs. However, a comprehensive literature review of recommender systems has demonstrated no concrete study on the role and impact of knowledge in user profiling and filtering approache. In this paper, we review the most prominent recommender systems in the literature and examine the impression of knowledge extracted from different sources. We then come up with this finding that semantic information from the user context has substantial impact on the performance of knowledge based recommender systems.     A Personalized Travel Recommendation System Using Social Media Analysis

    Personalization of recommender systems enables customized services to users. Social media is one resource that aids personalization. This study explores the use of twitter data to personalize travel recommendations. A machine learning classification model is used to identify travel related tweets. The travel tweets are then used to personalize recommendations regarding places of interest for the user. Places of interest are categorized as: historical buildings, museums, parks, and restaurants. To better personalize the model, travel tweets of the user\u27s friends and followers are also mined. Volunteer twitter users were asked to provide their twitter handle as well as rank their travel category preferences in a survey. We evaluated our model by comparing the predictions made by our model with the users choices in the survey. The evaluations show 68% prediction accuracy. The accuracy can be improved with a better travel-tweet training dataset as well as a better travel category identification technique using machine learning. The travel categories can be increased to include items like sports venues, musical events, entertainment, etc. and thereby fine-tune the recommendations.     A RECOMMENDER MODEL USING SOCIAL TIE STRENGTH FOR THE CHUNK LEARNING SYSTEM

    With the onset of COVID-19, rising tuition costs, and technological advancements, online courses have become a pervasive medium through which education is conducted. Currently, several online educational services tailor education to students through various methods of recommender models. One such system, the Curated Heuristic Using a Network of Knowledge (CHUNK) Learning, developed at the Naval Postgraduate School, uses a recommender system that relies on user profile attributes. We propose a complementary recommendation system to expand upon CHUNK's current recommender method by incorporating implicit recommendations from a user's social network based on tie strength between learners. In this work, we create a synthetic social network of learners and calculate the Jaccard Index and Pearson Correlation Coefficient similarity values to distinguish between strong and weak social ties. These tie classifications are then used to personalize content recommendations and expose users to greater breadth or depth of applicable knowledge based on current interests or job goals. We simulate recommendations for a user under different circumstances and show that our recommender system promotes the algorithmic formation of communities of learners on similar educational tracks.     Telepath: Understanding Users from a Human Vision Perspective in Large-Scale Recommender Systems

    Designing an e-commerce recommender system that serves hundreds of millions of active users is a daunting challenge. From a human vision perspective, there're two key factors that affect users' behaviors: items' attractiveness and their matching degree with users' interests. This paper proposes Telepath, a vision-based bionic recommender system model, which understands users from such perspective. Telepath is a combination of a convolutional neural network (CNN), a recurrent neural network (RNN) and deep neural networks (DNNs). Its CNN subnetwork simulates the human vision system to extract key visual signals of items' attractiveness and generate corresponding activations. Its RNN and DNN subnetworks simulate cerebral cortex to understand users' interest based on the activations generated from browsed items. In practice, the Telepath model has been launched to JD's recommender system and advertising system. For one of the major item recommendation blocks on the JD app, click-through rate (CTR), gross merchandise value (GMV) and orders have increased 1.59%, 8.16% and 8.71% respectively. For several major ads publishers of JD demand-side platform, CTR, GMV and return on investment have increased 6.58%, 61.72% and 65.57% respectively by the first launch, and further increased 2.95%, 41.75% and 41.37% respectively by the second launch.Comment: 8 pages, 11 figures, 1 tabl

    Toward a collective intelligence recommender system for education

    The development of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), have revolutionized the world and have moved us into the information age, however the access and handling of this large amount of information is causing valuable time losses. Teachers in Higher Education especially use the Internet as a tool to consult materials and content for the development of the subjects. The internet has very broad services, and sometimes it is difficult for users to find the contents in an easy and fast way. This problem is increasing at the time, causing that students spend a lot of time in search information rather than in synthesis, analysis and construction of new knowledge. In this context, several questions have emerged: Is it possible to design learning activities that allow us to value the information search and to encourage collective participation?. What are the conditions that an ICT tool that supports a process of information search has to have to optimize the student's time and learning? This article presents the use and application of a Recommender System (RS) designed on paradigms of Collective Intelligence (CI). The RS designed encourages the collective learning and the authentic participation of the students. The research combines the literature study with the analysis of the ICT tools that have emerged in the field of the CI and RS. Also, Design-Based Research (DBR) was used to compile and summarize collective intelligence approaches and filtering techniques reported in the literature in Higher Education as well as to incrementally improving the tool. Several are the benefits that have been evidenced as a result of the exploratory study carried out. Among them the following stand out: • It improves student motivation, as it helps you discover new content of interest in an easy way. • It saves time in the search and classification of teaching material of interest. • It fosters specialized reading, inspires competence as a means of learning. • It gives the teacher the ability to generate reports of trends and behaviors of their students, real-time assessment of the quality of learning material. The authors consider that the use of ICT tools that combine the paradigms of the CI and RS presented in this work, are a tool that improves the construction of student knowledge and motivates their collective development in cyberspace, in addition, the model of Filltering Contents used supports the design of models and strategies of collective intelligence in Higher Education.Postprint (author's final draft
