Learning to see with Deleuze: understanding affective responses in image-viewer research assemblages

    Get PDF
I describe an approach to analysing the affective flows produced in sociomaterial assemblages of visual images and humans in research processes. The approach combines Deleuzian understandings of assemblage, repetition and difference, and of lines of articulation and flight, with interpretative techniques drawn from visual social semiotics. I use examples from my research into images shared by professionals on Twitter to illustrate how this approach can reveal not only the forces, intensities and hidden logics that lead to particular responses, but also the ways in which these responses impact on research decisions and interpretations

Learning to See is short for developing a useful strategic awareness and understanding of a dynamic and complex world. Preparing leaders for 21st Century challenges requires learning environments that are not only safe for honest intellectual inquiry and discourse but that are also richly diverse for fostering new and creative thinking. The Strategic Leaders International Course (SLIC) engages visual, musical, and written art and design in the classroom in order to better explore the human experience and create a learning environment that is conducive to creative thinking and self-discovery. Engaging art – viewing, reading, listening, creating - in the process of structured national security related learning introduces unexpected, uniquely-related content that offers intellectual and cultural on-ramps to new ideas and cultivates our capacity to think creatively. However modestly applied, art engagement can likewise offer untrodden pathways for Learning to See the relationships between Women, Peace, and Security in new ways. This presentation will offer a brief overview of the 4-week strategic leaders course, examples of uses and outcomes of art engagement in SLIC’s learning environment, and how the important relationships between Women, Peace and Security can be approached by an art-inspired journey toward Learning to See.https://digital-commons.usnwc.edu/wps/1011/thumbnail.jp

Learning to See is a written document accompanying the culmination of my three years painting at a graduate level. Through an exploration of line, color, shape, light and bears I traverse the wandering heart of painting. This document is an exploration of the place in which people become bears and bears become mountains

Learning to See at the Large Hadron Collider

The staged commissioning of the Large Hadron Collider presents an opportunity to map gross features of particle production over a significant energy range. I suggest a visual tool - event displays in (pseudo)rapidity-transverse-momentum space - as a scenic route that may help sharpen intuition, identify interesting classes of events for further investigation, and test expectations about the underlying event that accompanies large-transverse-momentum phenomena.Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures, pdfte

The interaction among applied technologies developed into the area of computer vision, human visual perception studied from Gestalt theories, and reviewing on the work of the most significant artists, feed back each other and provide a basis for the formulation of strategies that help in understanding the perceptual phenomena when we face the observational drawing and its learning. One of the primary objectives of this work focuses precisely on giving visibility to the intellectual processes involved in the processes of vision-perception-representation that are present in the software for digital image processing, notably encouraging results obtained in the experimental practice of drawing
