    E-commerce has changed the nature of the value propositions that companies now offer to their customers. The convergence of content sites and social networks has resulted in emerging e-commerce business models. The group buying/local daily deals e-commerce platform represents the collective bargaining power that individuals can leverage to obtain daily deals on local products, services and “experiences”. These local discounted deals are distributed via e-mail and the websites of companies like Groupon and LivingSocial that have established themselves as the sector leaders. The convergence of traditional and electronic business models, as well as traditional and new business practices, are changing the face of global business as we know it. In this study, the authors critically reflect on the strategic management implications of the convergence of content, community and commerce in the form of social e-commerce and daily deal sites. The authors consider the implications of the rapid growth experienced by daily deal social group buying sites, in terms of strategy, and question its long-term value-creation. Future investors are urged to consider the long-term value-creation and not merely the short-term payoff of these sites. Merchants are urged to consider the practical implications of offering coupons on these sites for the day-to-day operation of their businesses

    Using Transaction Utility Approach for Retail Format Decision

    Transaction Utility theory was propounded by Thaler to explain that the value derived by a customer from an exchange consists of two drivers: Acquisition Utilities and Transaction utilities. Acquisition utility represents the economic gain or loss from the transaction. Where as transaction utility is associated with purchase or (sale) and represents the pleasure (or displeasure) of the financial deal per se and is a function of the difference between the selling price and the reference price. Choice of a format has been studied from several dimensions including the cost and effort as well as the non-monetary values. However, the studies that present the complete picture and combine the aspects of the tangible as well as intangible values derived out of the shopping process are limited. Most of the studies, all of them from the developed economies, have focussed on the selection of a store. They represent a scenario where formats have stabilised. However, in Indian scenario formats have been found to be influencing the choice of store as well as orientation of the shoppers. Also, retailers are experimenting with alternate format with differing success rates. The author has also not found a study that has applied this theory. It is felt that the Transactional Utility Theory may provide a suitable approach for making format decisions.

    Intention and adoption of mobile coupon among mobile phone users in Klang Valley

    The arrival of mobile marketing communication has created a new method of sales promotion and advertising technique called mobile coupon. The main objective of this research is to examine the determinants of consumers’ intentions to subscribe mobile coupon and the consequence mobile coupon adoption by using Theory of Planned Behavior as the underpinning theory and perceived values, trust and perceived control are chosen as independent variables while consumer experience is selected as the moderator variable. The survey method is employed in the present study and sample consisted of 570 mobile coupon adopters between the ages of 15 - 49 years old located in Klang Valley. Data analysis involves descriptive analysis, factor analysis and multiple regression. Results indicated that 51.5 percent of consumers’ adoption to subscribe model coupon in contributed by the level of intention. It was also discovered that the level of consumers’ intention to subscribe mobile coupon service is at moderate level. Monetary factor has the highest influence on consumer intention to subscribe mobile coupon followed by emotional, convenient and trust factors. The result also indicated that consumer experience moderates the relationships between monetary and perceived control on consumers’ intention to subscribe mobile coupon. Finally, consumers’ intention to subscribe mobile coupon has significant effect on consumers’ adoption of mobile coupon.
