    Human-Machine Interface for Remote Training of Robot Tasks

    Regardless of their industrial or research application, the streamlining of robot operations is limited by the proximity of experienced users to the actual hardware. Be it massive open online robotics courses, crowd-sourcing of robot task training, or remote research on massive robot farms for machine learning, the need to create an apt remote Human-Machine Interface is quite prevalent. The paper at hand proposes a novel solution to the programming/training of remote robots employing an intuitive and accurate user-interface which offers all the benefits of working with real robots without imposing delays and inefficiency. The system includes: a vision-based 3D hand detection and gesture recognition subsystem, a simulated digital twin of a robot as visual feedback, and the "remote" robot learning/executing trajectories using dynamic motion primitives.     Learning high-speed flight in the wild

    Quadrotors are agile. Unlike most other machines, they can traverse extremely complex environments at high speeds. To date, only expert human pilots have been able to fully exploit their capabilities. Autonomous operation with onboard sensing and computation has been limited to low speeds. State-of-the-art methods generally separate the navigation problem into subtasks: sensing, mapping, and planning. Although this approach has proven successful at low speeds, the separation it builds upon can be problematic for high-speed navigation in cluttered environments. The subtasks are executed sequentially, leading to increased processing latency and a compounding of errors through the pipeline. Here, we propose an end-to-end approach that can autonomously fly quadrotors through complex natural and human-made environments at high speeds with purely onboard sensing and computation. The key principle is to directly map noisy sensory observations to collision-free trajectories in a receding-horizon fashion. This direct mapping drastically reduces processing latency and increases robustness to noisy and incomplete perception. The sensorimotor mapping is performed by a convolutional network that is trained exclusively in simulation via privileged learning: imitating an expert with access to privileged information. By simulating realistic sensor noise, our approach achieves zero-shot transfer from simulation to challenging real-world environments that were never experienced during training: dense forests, snow-covered terrain, derailed trains, and collapsed buildings. Our work demonstrates that end-to-end policies trained in simulation enable high-speed autonomous flight through challenging environments, outperforming traditional obstacle avoidance pipelines

    Virtual Structure Based Formation Tracking of Multiple Wheeled Mobile Robots: An Optimization Perspective

    Today, with the increasing development of science and technology, many systems need to be optimized to find the optimal solution of the system. this kind of problem is also called optimization problem. Especially in the formation problem of multi-wheeled mobile robots, the optimization algorithm can help us to find the optimal solution of the formation problem. In this paper, the formation problem of multi-wheeled mobile robots is studied from the point of view of optimization. In order to reduce the complexity of the formation problem, we first put the robots with the same requirements into a group. Then, by using the virtual structure method, the formation problem is reduced to a virtual WMR trajectory tracking problem with placeholders, which describes the expected position of each WMR formation. By using placeholders, you can get the desired track for each WMR. In addition, in order to avoid the collision between multiple WMR in the group, we add an attraction to the trajectory tracking method. Because MWMR in the same team have different attractions, collisions can be easily avoided. Through simulation analysis, it is proved that the optimization model is reasonable and correct. In the last part, the limitations of this model and corresponding suggestions are given

    EFFECTIVE NAVIGATION AND MAPPING OF A CLUTTERED ENVIRONMENT USING A MOBILE ROBOT

    Today, the as-is three-dimensional point cloud acquisition process for understanding scenes of interest, monitoring construction progress, and detecting safety hazards uses a laser scanning system mounted on mobile robots, which enables it faster and more automated, but there is still room for improvement. The main disadvantage of data collection using laser scanners is that point cloud data is only collected in a scanner’s line of sight, so regions in three-dimensional space that are occluded by objects are not observable. To solve this problem and obtain a complete reconstruction of sites without information loss, scans must be taken from multiple viewpoints. This thesis describes how such a solution can be integrated into a fully autonomous mobile robot capable of generating a high-resolution three-dimensional point cloud of a cluttered and unknown environment without a prior map. First, the mobile platform estimates unevenness of terrain and surrounding environment. Second, it finds the occluded region in the currently built map and determines the effective next scan location. Then, it moves to that location by using grid-based path planner and unevenness estimation results. Finally, it performs the high-resolution scanning that area to fill out the point cloud map. This process repeats until the designated scan region filled up with scanned point cloud. The mobile platform also keeps scanning for navigation and obstacle avoidance purposes, calculates its relative location, and builds the surrounding map while moving and scanning, a process known as simultaneous localization and mapping. The proposed approaches and the system were tested and validated in an outdoor construction site and a simulated disaster environment with promising results.Ph.D

    Deep Reinforcement Learning for Autonomous Ground Vehicle Exploration Without A-Priori Maps

    Autonomous Ground Vehicles (AGVs) are essential tools for a wide range of applications stemming from their ability to operate in hazardous environments with minimal human operator input. Effective motion planning is paramount for successful operation of AGVs. Conventional motion planning algorithms are dependent on prior knowledge of environment characteristics and offer limited utility in information poor, dynamically altering environments such as areas where emergency hazards like fire and earthquake occur, and unexplored subterranean environments such as tunnels and lava tubes on Mars. We propose a Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) framework for intelligent AGV exploration without a-priori maps utilizing Actor-Critic DRL algorithms to learn policies in continuous and high-dimensional action spaces directly from raw sensor data. The DRL architecture comprises feedforward neural networks for the critic and actor representations in which the actor network strategizes linear and angular velocity control actions given current state inputs, that are evaluated by the critic network which learns and estimates Q-values to maximize an accumulated reward. Three off-policy DRL algorithms, DDPG, TD3 and SAC, are trained and compared in two environments of varying complexity, and further evaluated in a third with no prior training or knowledge of map characteristics. The agent is shown to learn optimal policies at the end of each training period to chart quick, collision-free exploration trajectories, and is extensible, capable of adapting to an unknown environment without changes to network architecture or hyperparameters. The best algorithm is further evaluated in a realistic 3D environment.Comment: ©\copyright 2023 the authors.     Decentralized Multi-Agent Exploration with Online-Learning of Gaussian Processes

    Exploration is a crucial problem in safety of life applications, such as search and rescue missions. Gaussian processes constitute an interesting underlying data model that leverages the spatial correlations of the process to be explored to reduce the required sampling of data. Furthermore, multiagent approaches offer well known advantages for exploration. Previous decentralized multi-agent exploration algorithms that use Gaussian processes as underlying data model, have only been validated through simulations. However, the implementation of an exploration algorithm brings difficulties that were not tackle yet. In this work, we propose an exploration algorithm that deals with the following challenges: (i) which information to transmit to achieve multi-agent coordination; (ii) how to implement a light-weight collision avoidance; (iii) how to learn the data’s model without prior information. We validate our algorithm with two experiments employing real robots. First, we explore the magnetic field intensity with a ground-based robot. Second, two quadcopters equipped with an ultrasound sensor explore a terrain profile. We show that our algorithm outperforms a meander and a random trajectory, as well as we are able to learn the data’s model online while exploring

    Intelligent Escape of Robotic Systems: A Survey of Methodologies, Applications, and Challenges

    Intelligent escape is an interdisciplinary field that employs artificial intelligence (AI) techniques to enable robots with the capacity to intelligently react to potential dangers in dynamic, intricate, and unpredictable scenarios. As the emphasis on safety becomes increasingly paramount and advancements in robotic technologies continue to advance, a wide range of intelligent escape methodologies has been developed in recent years. This paper presents a comprehensive survey of state-of-the-art research work on intelligent escape of robotic systems. Four main methods of intelligent escape are reviewed, including planning-based methodologies, partitioning-based methodologies, learning-based methodologies, and bio-inspired methodologies. The strengths and limitations of existing methods are summarized. In addition, potential applications of intelligent escape are discussed in various domains, such as search and rescue, evacuation, military security, and healthcare.
