Learning music similarity from relative user ratings
Computational modelling of music similarity is an increasingly important part of personalisation and optimisation in music information retrieval and research in music perception and cognition. The use of relative similarity ratings is a new and promising approach to modelling similarity that avoids well known problems with absolute ratings. In this article, we use relative ratings from the MagnaTagATune dataset with new and existing variants of state-of-the-art algorithms and provide the first comprehensive and rigorous evaluation of this approach. We compare metric learning based on support vector machines (SVMs) and metric-learning-to-rank (MLR), including a diagonal and a novel weighted variant, and relative distance learning with neural networks (RDNN). We further evaluate the effectiveness of different high and low level audio features and genre data, as well as dimensionality reduction methods, weighting of similarity ratings, and different sampling methods. Our results show that music similarity measures learnt on relative ratings can be significantly better than a standard Euclidian metric, depending on the choice of learning algorithm, feature sets and application scenario. MLR and SVM outperform DMLR and RDNN, while MLR with weighted ratings leads to no further performance gain. Timbral and music-structural features are most effective, and all features jointly are significantly better than any other combination of feature sets. Sharing audio clips (but not the similarity ratings) between test and training sets improves performance, in particular for the SVM-based methods, which is useful for some applications scenarios. RACOFI: A Rule-Applying Collaborative Filtering System
In this paper we give an overview of the RACOFI (Rule-Applying Collaborative Filtering) multidimensional rating system and its related technologies. This will be exemplified with RACOFI Music, an implemented collaboration agent that assists on-line users in the rating and recommendation of audio (Learning) Objects. It lets users rate contemporary Canadian music in the five dimensions of impression, lyrics, music, originality, and production. The collaborative filtering algorithms STI Pearson, STIN2, and the Per Item Average algorithms are then employed together with RuleML-based rules to recommend music objects that best match user queries. RACOFI has been on-line since August 2003 at http://racofi.elg.ca.
Integrating Segmentation and Similarity in Melodic Analysis
The recognition of melodic structure depends on both the segmentation into structural units, the melodic motifs, and relations of motifs which are mainly determined by similarity. Existing models and studies of segmentation and motivic similarity cover only certain aspects and do not provide a comprehensive or coherent theory. In this paper an Integrated Segmentation and Similarity Model (ISSM) for melodic analysis is introduced. The ISSM yields an interpretation similar to a paradigmatic analysis for a given melody. An interpretation comprises a segmentation, assignments of related motifs and notes, and detailed information on the differences of assigned motifs and notes. The ISSM is based on generating and rating interpretations to find the most adequate one. For this rating a neuro-fuzzy-system is used, which combines knowledge with learning from data. The ISSM is an extension of a system for rhythm analysis. This paper covers the model structure and the features relevant for melodic and motivic analysis. Melodic segmentation and similarity ratings are described and results of a small experiment which show that the ISSM can learn structural interpretations from data and that integrating similarity improves segmentation performance of the model
How Algorithmic Confounding in Recommendation Systems Increases Homogeneity and Decreases Utility
Recommendation systems are ubiquitous and impact many domains; they have the
potential to influence product consumption, individuals' perceptions of the
world, and life-altering decisions. These systems are often evaluated or
trained with data from users already exposed to algorithmic recommendations;
this creates a pernicious feedback loop. Using simulations, we demonstrate how
using data confounded in this way homogenizes user behavior without increasing
utility
Current Challenges and Visions in Music Recommender Systems Research
Music recommender systems (MRS) have experienced a boom in recent years,
thanks to the emergence and success of online streaming services, which
nowadays make available almost all music in the world at the user's fingertip.
While today's MRS considerably help users to find interesting music in these
huge catalogs, MRS research is still facing substantial challenges. In
particular when it comes to build, incorporate, and evaluate recommendation
strategies that integrate information beyond simple user--item interactions or
content-based descriptors, but dig deep into the very essence of listener
needs, preferences, and intentions, MRS research becomes a big endeavor and
related publications quite sparse.
The purpose of this trends and survey article is twofold. We first identify
and shed light on what we believe are the most pressing challenges MRS research
is facing, from both academic and industry perspectives. We review the state of
the art towards solving these challenges and discuss its limitations. Second,
we detail possible future directions and visions we contemplate for the further
evolution of the field. The article should therefore serve two purposes: giving
the interested reader an overview of current challenges in MRS research and
providing guidance for young researchers by identifying interesting, yet
under-researched, directions in the field
Network Model Selection for Task-Focused Attributed Network Inference
Networks are models representing relationships between entities. Often these
relationships are explicitly given, or we must learn a representation which
generalizes and predicts observed behavior in underlying individual data (e.g.
attributes or labels). Whether given or inferred, choosing the best
representation affects subsequent tasks and questions on the network. This work
focuses on model selection to evaluate network representations from data,
focusing on fundamental predictive tasks on networks. We present a modular
methodology using general, interpretable network models, task neighborhood
functions found across domains, and several criteria for robust model
selection. We demonstrate our methodology on three online user activity
datasets and show that network model selection for the appropriate network task
vs. an alternate task increases performance by an order of magnitude in our
experiments
