Hierarchical outranking methods for multi-criteria decision aiding
MCDA distinguishes two main approaches to deal with this type of problems: utility-based and outranking methods, each with its own strengths and weaknesses. Outranking methods are based on social choice models combined with Artificial Intelligence techniques (such as the management of categorical data or uncertainty). They are recognized as providing tools for a realistic assessment and comparison of a set of alternatives, based on the decision maker’s knowledge and needs. One of the main weaknesses of the outranking methods is the lack of consideration of hierarchies of criteria, which enables the decision maker to naturally organize the problem, distinguishing different levels of generality that model the implicit taxonomical relations between the criteria. In this thesis we focus on developing hierarchical outranking tools and their application to real-world case studies for ranking and sorting problems
A novel sorting method topsis-sort: an applicaiton for tehran environmental quality evaluation
Many real-life problems are multi-objective by nature that requires evaluation of more than one
criterion, therefore MCDM has become an important issue. In recent years, many MCDM methods
have been developed; the existing approaches have been improved and extended. Multi criteria
decision analysis has been regarded as a suitable set of methods to perform sustainability
evaluations. Among numerous MCDM methods developed to solve real-life decision problems,
Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) continues to work
satisfactorily in diverse application areas. In this paper, a novel sorting method (TOPSIS-Sort) based
on the classic TOPSIS method is presented. In the TOPSIS-Sort approach an outranking relation
is used for sorting purposes. The proposed approach uses characteristic profiles for defining the
classes and outranking relation as the preference model. Application of the proposed approach is
demonstrated by classifying 22 districts of Tehran into
five classes (but none of the districts
fits into
Classes 4 and 5), representing areas with different levels of environmental quality. An analysis and
assessment of the environmental conditions in Tehran helps to identify the districts with the poor
environmental quality. Priority should be given to these areas to maintain and improve the quality
of environment. The results obtained by the TOPSIS-Sort give credence to its success, because
the results of sorting con
firm our and specialists’ evaluation of the districts. This research provides
appropriate results with respect to the development of sorting models in the form of outranking
relations. The model, proposed by this study, is applicable to the other outranking methods such as

Enhancing the ELECTRE decision support method with semantic data
Reach a decision when options are defined on a set of diverse criteria is not easy. This thesis is focused on improving the methodology ELECTRE, which is the most used outranking-based method. In this dissertation, we focus on decision problems involving non-numerical information, such as multi-valued semantic criteria, which may take as values the concepts of a given domain ontology.
First, I propose a new way of handling semantic criteria to avoid the aggregation of the numerical scores before the ranking procedure. This method, called ELECTRE-SEM, follows the same principles than the classic ELECTRE but in this case the concordance and discordance indices are defined in terms of the pairwise comparison of the interest scores. Second, I also propose to create a semantic user profile by storing preference scores into the ontology. The numerical interest score attached to the most specific concepts permits to distinguish better the preferences of the user, improving the quality of the decision by the incorporation of an aggregation methodology to infer the user's preferences by considering taxonomic relations between concepts.
The proposed methodology has been applied in two case studies: the assessment of power generation plants and the recommendation of touristic activities in Tarragona
An algorithm for ordinal sorting based on ELECTRE with categories defined by examples
Abstract This work proposes a Progressive Assisted Sorting Algorithm (PASA) based on a multicriteria evaluation ELECTRE-type method. The purpose of the PASA is to aid a decision maker to progressively sort a set of alternatives into a set of categories, which we considered are ordered (ordinal sorting), following a consistency principle. We consider the principle that if an alternative outranks (is as good as) a second one, then it must belong to the same category or to a better category. The set of alternatives already sorted by the decision maker will implicitly define the categories, and will constrain the range of categories where other alternatives may be sorted. We show how the same idea may be used in an aggregation/disaggregation approach, considering some parameters of ELECTRE are not fixed a priori, but are constrained only by the examples provided. In this context, we establish a "convex-shape property" stating that the range of possible categories for an alternative is always an interval of categories. A discussion contrasting this approach with ELECTRE TRI is included in the conclusions
A theoretical look at ELECTRE TRI-nB and related sorting models
ELECTRE TRI is a set of methods designed to sort alternatives evaluated on
several attributes into ordered categories. The original ELECTRE TRI-B method
uses one limiting profile per category. A more recent method, ELECTRE TRI-nB,
allows one to use several limiting profiles for each category. We investigate
the properties of ELECTRE TRI-nB. When the number of limiting profiles used to
define each category is not restricted, ELECTRE TRI-nB is easy to characterize
axiomatically and is found to be equivalent to several other methods proposed
in the literature. We extend this result in various directions.Comment: 40 page
