FCMpy: A Python Module for Constructing and Analyzing Fuzzy Cognitive Maps
FCMpy is an open source package in Python for building and analyzing Fuzzy
Cognitive Maps. More specifically, the package allows 1) deriving fuzzy causal
weights from qualitative data, 2) simulating the system behavior, 3) applying
machine learning algorithms (e.g., Nonlinear Hebbian Learning, Active Hebbian
Learning, Genetic Algorithms and Deterministic Learning) to adjust the FCM
causal weight matrix and to solve classification problems, and 4) implementing
scenario analysis by simulating hypothetical interventions (i.e., analyzing
what-if scenarios).Comment: 22 pages, 9 Figure

Landsat Satellite Image Segmentation Using the Fuzzy ARTMAP Neural Network
This application illustrates how the fuzzy ARTMAP neural network can be used to monitor environmental changes. A benchmark problem seeks to classify regions of a Landsat image into six soil and crop classes based on images from four spectral sensors. Simulations show that fuzzy ARTMAP outperforms fourteen other neural network and machine learning algorithms. Only the k-Nearest-Neighbor algorithm shows better performance (91% vs. 89%) but without any code compression, while fuzzy ARTMAP achieves a code compression ratio of 6:1. Even with a code compression ratio of 50:1 fuzzy ARTMAP still maintains good performance (83%). This example shows how fuzzy ARTMAP can combine accuracy and code compression in real-world applications.Office of Naval Research (N00014-92-J-401J, N00014-91-J-4100, N00014-92-J-4015); National Science Foundation (IRI 90-00530

Distributed ARTMAP
Distributed coding at the hidden layer of a multi-layer perceptron (MLP) endows the network with memory compression and noise tolerance capabilities. However, an MLP typically requires slow off-line learning to avoid catastrophic forgetting in an open input environment. An adaptive resonance theory (ART) model is designed to guarantee stable memories even with fast on-line learning. However, ART stability typically requires winner-take-all coding, which may cause category proliferation in a noisy input environment. Distributed ARTMAP (dARTMAP) seeks to combine the computational advantages of MLP and ART systems in a real-time neural network for supervised learning. This system incorporates elements of the unsupervised dART model as well as new features, including a content-addressable memory (CAM) rule. Simulations show that dARTMAP retains fuzzy ARTMAP accuracy while significantly improving memory compression. The model's computational learning rules correspond to paradoxical cortical data.Office of Naval Research (N00014-95-1-0409, N00014-95-1-0657
