    Trajectory data mining: A review of methods and applications

    The increasing use of location-aware devices has led to an increasing availability of trajectory data. As a result, researchers devoted their efforts to developing analysis methods including different data mining methods for trajectories. However, the research in this direction has so far produced mostly isolated studies and we still lack an integrated view of problems in applications of trajectory mining that were solved, the methods used to solve them, and applications using the obtained solutions. In this paper, we first discuss generic methods of trajectory mining and the relationships between them. Then, we discuss and classify application problems that were solved using trajectory data and relate them to the generic mining methods that were used and real world applications based on them. We classify trajectory-mining application problems under major problem groups based on how they are related. This classification of problems can guide researchers in identifying new application problems. The relationships between the methods together with the association between the application problems and mining methods can help researchers in identifying gaps between methods and inspire them to develop new methods. This paper can also guide analysts in choosing a suitable method for a specific problem. The main contribution of this paper is to provide an integrated view relating applications of mining trajectory data and the methods used

    A review of the role of sensors in mobile context-aware recommendation systems

    Recommendation systems are specialized in offering suggestions about specific items of different types (e.g., books, movies, restaurants, and hotels) that could be interesting for the user. They have attracted considerable research attention due to their benefits and also their commercial interest. Particularly, in recent years, the concept of context-aware recommendation system has appeared to emphasize the importance of considering the context of the situations in which the user is involved in order to provide more accurate recommendations. The detection of the context requires the use of sensors of different types, which measure different context variables. Despite the relevant role played by sensors in the development of context-aware recommendation systems, sensors and recommendation approaches are two fields usually studied independently. In this paper, we provide a survey on the use of sensors for recommendation systems. Our contribution can be seen from a double perspective. On the one hand, we overview existing techniques used to detect context factors that could be relevant for recommendation. On the other hand, we illustrate the interest of sensors by considering different recommendation use cases and scenarios

    Knowledge Discovery through Mobility Data Integration

    In the era of Big Data a huge amount of information are available from every sin- gle citizen of our hyper-connected world. A simple smartphone can collect data with different kinds of information: a big part of these are related to mobility. A smartphone is connected to networks, such as GSM, GPS, Internet (and then social networks): each of them can provide us information about where, how and why the user is moving across space and time. Data integration has a key role in this understanding process: the combination of different data sources increases the value of the extracted knowledge, even though such integration task is often not trivial. This thesis aim to represent a step toward a reliable Mobility Analysis framework, capable to exploit the richness of the spatio-temporal data nowadays available. The work done is an exploration of meaningful open challenges, from an efficient Map Matching of low sampling GPS data to Inferring Human Activities from GPS tracks. A further experimentation has been performed over GSM and Twitter data, in order to detect and recognize significant events in terms of people presence and related tweets. Another promising perspective is the use of such extracted knowledge to enrich actual geospatial Datasets with a ’Wisdom of the crowd’ dimension to derive, for instance, routing policies over road networks: most chosen paths among usual drivers are more meaningful than simple shortest paths

    Multi-Dimensional-Personalization in mobile contexts

    During the dot com era the word "personalisation” was a hot buzzword. With the fall of the dot com companies the topic has lost momentum. As the killer application for UMTS or the mobile internet has yet to be identified, the concept of Multi-Dimensional-Personalisation (MDP) could be a candidate. Using this approach, a recommendation of mobile advertisement or marketing (i.e., recommendations or notifications), online content, as well as offline events, can be offered to the user based on their known interests and current location. Instead of having to request or pull this information, the new service concept would proactively provide the information and services – with the consequence that the right information or service could therefore be offered at the right place, at the right time. The growing availability of "Location-based Services“ for mobile phones is a new target for the use of personalisation. "Location-based Services“ are information, for example, about restaurants, hotels or shopping malls with offers which are in close range / short distance to the user. The lack of acceptance for such services in the past is based on the fact that early implementations required the user to pull the information from the service provider. A more promising approach is to actively push information to the user. This information must be from interest to the user and has to reach the user at the right time and at the right place. This raises new requirements on personalisation which will go far beyond present requirements. It will reach out from personalisation based only on the interest of the user. Besides the interest, the enhanced personalisation has to cover the location and movement patterns, the usage and the past, present and future schedule of the user. This new personalisation paradigm has to protect the user’s privacy so that an approach supporting anonymous recommendations through an extended "Chinese Wall“ will be described

    Modeling, Predicting and Capturing Human Mobility

    Realistic models of human mobility are critical for modern day applications, specifically for recommendation systems, resource planning and process optimization domains. Given the rapid proliferation of mobile devices equipped with Internet connectivity and GPS functionality today, aggregating large sums of individual geolocation data is feasible. The thesis focuses on methodologies to facilitate data-driven mobility modeling by drawing parallels between the inherent nature of mobility trajectories, statistical physics and information theory. On the applied side, the thesis contributions lie in leveraging the formulated mobility models to construct prediction workflows by adopting a privacy-by-design perspective. This enables end users to derive utility from location-based services while preserving their location privacy. Finally, the thesis presents several approaches to generate large-scale synthetic mobility datasets by applying machine learning approaches to facilitate experimental reproducibility

    The Places of Our Lives: Visiting Patterns and Automatic Labeling from Longitudinal Smartphone Data

    The location tracking functionality of modern mobile devices provides unprecedented opportunity to the understanding of individual mobility in daily life. Instead of studying raw geographic coordinates, we are interested in understanding human mobility patterns based on sequences of place visits which encode, at a coarse resolution, most daily activities. This paper presents a study on place characterization in people's everyday life based on data recorded continuously by smartphones. First, we study human mobility from sequences of place visits, including visiting patterns on different place categories. Second, we address the problem of automatic place labeling from smartphone data without using any geo-location information. Our study on a large-scale data collected from 114 smartphone users over 18 months confirms many intuitions, and also reveals findings regarding both regularly and novelty trends in visiting patterns. Considering the problem of place labeling with 10 place categories, we show that frequently visited places can be recognized reliably (over 80%) while it is much more challenging to recognize infrequent places

    Geographical places as a personalisation element: extracting profiles from human activities and services of visited places in mobility logs

    Collecting personal mobility traces of individuals is currently applicable on a large scale due to the popularity of position-aware mobile phones. Statistical analysis of GPS data streams, collected with a mobile phone, can reveal several interesting measures such as the most frequently visited geographical places by some individual. Applying probabilistic models to such data sets can predict the next place to visit, and when. Several practical applications can utilise the results of such analysis. Current state of the art, however, is limited in terms of the qualitative analysis of personal mobility logs. Without explicit user-interactions, not much semantics can be inferred from a GPS log. This work proposes the utilisation of the common human activities and services provided at certain place types to extract semantically rich profiles from personal mobility logs. The resulting profiles include spatial, temporal and generic thematic description of a user. The work introduces several pre-processing methods for GPS data streams, collected with personal mobile devices, which improved the quality of the place extraction process from GPS logs. The thesis also introduces a method for extracting place semantics from multiple data sources. A textual corpus of functional descriptions of human activities and services associated with certain geographic place types is analysed to identify the frequent linguistic patterns used to describe such terms. The patterns found are then matched against multiple textual data sources of place semantics, to extract such terms, for a collection of place types. The results were evaluated in comparison to an equivalent expert ontology, as well as to semantics collected from the general public. Finally, the work proposes a model for the resulting profiles, the necessary algorithms to build and utilise such profiles, along with an encoding mark-up language. A simulated mobile application was developed to show the usability and for evaluation of the resulting profiles
