Comparing Computing Platforms for Deep Learning on a Humanoid Robot
The goal of this study is to test two different computing platforms with
respect to their suitability for running deep networks as part of a humanoid
robot software system. One of the platforms is the CPU-centered Intel NUC7i7BNH
and the other is a NVIDIA Jetson TX2 system that puts more emphasis on GPU
processing. The experiments addressed a number of benchmarking tasks including
pedestrian detection using deep neural networks. Some of the results were
unexpected but demonstrate that platforms exhibit both advantages and
disadvantages when taking computational performance and electrical power

Enabling Depth-driven Visual Attention on the iCub Humanoid Robot: Instructions for Use and New Perspectives
The importance of depth perception in the interactions that humans have
within their nearby space is a well established fact. Consequently, it is also
well known that the possibility of exploiting good stereo information would
ease and, in many cases, enable, a large variety of attentional and interactive
behaviors on humanoid robotic platforms. However, the difficulty of computing
real-time and robust binocular disparity maps from moving stereo cameras often
prevents from relying on this kind of cue to visually guide robots' attention
and actions in real-world scenarios. The contribution of this paper is
two-fold: first, we show that the Efficient Large-scale Stereo Matching
algorithm (ELAS) by A. Geiger et al. 2010 for computation of the disparity map
is well suited to be used on a humanoid robotic platform as the iCub robot;
second, we show how, provided with a fast and reliable stereo system,
implementing relatively challenging visual behaviors in natural settings can
require much less effort. As a case of study we consider the common situation
where the robot is asked to focus the attention on one object close in the
scene, showing how a simple but effective disparity-based segmentation solves
the problem in this case. Indeed this example paves the way to a variety of
other similar applications
Online Visual Robot Tracking and Identification using Deep LSTM Networks
Collaborative robots working on a common task are necessary for many
applications. One of the challenges for achieving collaboration in a team of
robots is mutual tracking and identification. We present a novel pipeline for
online visionbased detection, tracking and identification of robots with a
known and identical appearance. Our method runs in realtime on the limited
hardware of the observer robot. Unlike previous works addressing robot tracking
and identification, we use a data-driven approach based on recurrent neural
networks to learn relations between sequential inputs and outputs. We formulate
the data association problem as multiple classification problems. A deep LSTM
network was trained on a simulated dataset and fine-tuned on small set of real
data. Experiments on two challenging datasets, one synthetic and one real,

Teaching humanoid robotics by means of human teleoperation through RGB-D sensors
This paper presents a graduate course project on humanoid robotics offered by the University of Padova. The target is to safely lift an object by teleoperating a small humanoid. Students have to map human limbs into robot joints, guarantee the robot stability during the motion, and teleoperate the robot to perform the correct movement. We introduce the following innovative aspects with respect to classical robotic classes: i) the use of humanoid robots as teaching tools; ii) the simplification of the stable locomotion problem by exploiting the potential of teleoperation; iii) the adoption of a Project-Based Learning constructivist approach as teaching methodology. The learning objectives of both course and project are introduced and compared with the students\u2019 background. Design and constraints students have to deal with are reported, together with the amount of time they and their instructors dedicated to solve tasks. A set of evaluation results are provided in order to validate the authors\u2019 purpose, including the students\u2019 personal feedback. A discussion about possible future improvements is reported, hoping to encourage further spread of educational robotics in schools at all levels
